Future of Cloud Computing in India "Cloud Computing" is a familiar cliché, a rage today but many are still asking what is Cloud Computing? Why is there so much buzz about it? Everyone has their own way of defining it. Some call it the virtual server others say that anything that is outside the firewall is in the cloud. Cloud has completely revolutionized the way businesses operate. It is important for organizations to maximize benefits and minimize risks of a move to the cloud. It is important for decision makers to understand the benefits of moving to the cloud can offer, so that they are well informed to ensure maximum cost savings, highest performance levels and strictest security from the infrastructure they ultimately invest in. India today is a global leader in providing IT services but the implementation of IT in its own backyard is still lagging behind. The trend is changing fast with the latest in technology arena – Cloud Computing. Enterprises big or small are all vying with each other to latch on to the cloud either as a provider or as a user. At present approximately 180+ companies are providing cloud based services with many more joining the race to get a piece of the cloud dollar. Cloud based services can be broadly divided into following: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) - is all about hardware, data storage, networking and bandwidth i.e. Server, Routers, and Switches etc. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) - is OS + Application Server Stack Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) - is ordering an application & to start consuming in minutes. IT before Cloud Computing IT has completely evolved today. Traditionally it was complicated, expensive and you needed a whole team of IT professionals to run it right from installation to configuring, testing, and updating. Apart from that organizations needed to invest heavily in hardware and software which put a heavy burden on IT. Small and mid-sized businesses could not take advantage of innumerable applications that were available. Why is Cloud Computing Better? Cloud computing being online form of computing, wherein users access applications via internet, with these applications installed and stored on a server existing in data centers remotely. This is a whole new form of computing. This allows thousands of users across the globe to access applications and data without having to download or install any software on their own computers. Google Docs is an example of this. Pay as you Use - You only pay for what you need, upgrades are automatic and scaling up or down is easy. Reduced Cost - Cloud Computing helps keep the cost down for both the users and owners. Users can access their files from any computer. If you are a service provider, you do not need to reproduce the software and ship it out; all they need is to update the application on the server. Increased Storage – More data can be stored than on private computer systems. Highly Automated - No longer do IT personnel need to worry about keeping software up to date. Flexibility - Cloud computing offers much more flexibility. More Mobility – Cloud Computing helps employees to be more mobile. They can access information wherever they are, rather than having to remain at their desks. As cloud computing grows in popularity, there are thousands of companies who are simply moving to the cloud.
