For those in the library community who may have thought, or hoped, that social media would be a trend that expired as quickly as it emerged, the evidence of its ongoing popularity is getting harder to refute. Regardless of where a library fits on the spectrum of social media engagement, the same basic rules for success apply: Many libraries have a goal, supported by management, and they aren't afraid to try or reject new things. They're flexible, and above all, they are having fun. Social media engagement can be an excellent way to reach a broader audience that is connected through the digital universe, but there has to be a reason you want to reach them. Marrying overall goals with management buy-in is a critical component to success. At the pace with which new social media tools are emerging, it's important to keep up with the information torrent, and that can be tricky.
