The year 2007/2008 during which I have been at the helm as your Chair has
been full of challenges. Nevertheless, with the support and encouragement
from all of us we have managed to transform some of the most challenging
events to outstanding experiences.

Below are brief reports on various activities which have taken place during the
year and the challenges we envision ahead.

Sports, as all of you are aware is the cornerstone of activities in this Club. It is no
mistake, therefore, that the Club is called Mombasa Sports Club.

1. Hockey [Both Men and Women Teams]

 The Hockey Ladies held a Coast Open Tournament in June that attracted
8 teams. The Participants were all men teams with the section’s team
        being the only ladies’ team.

 The section thereafter hosted a Rewind party for all participating teams
and Club Members. The Hot Coconut Band performed.

 The Ladies played Barclays Eaglets and lost one nil. However in the
match with Kenyatta University, The Club beat the guests 2-1. They
played against Sliders of Nairobi on 2nd December, 2007.

 Both Hockey Ladies and Men held their league matches on 6th October,
2007 from 4 pm at the Club grounds against Ramblers and K.C.A
University and on 13th October they played Blue Eaglets at City Park.

 The Hockey Men played 2 matches in the KHU league loosing I game to
JKUAT by 1:2 and winning 1 against Mombasa Institute by 3:1

 The Hockey played against Jomo Kenyatta University and drew2-2.

 Hockey men hosted Parklands team and the results were nil nil. They
travelled to Nairobi to play against Goan Institute and Western Jaquars
       on 1st and 2nd December, 2007 respectively.

Evidently it has been an eventual and fruitful 1 year for the hockey
teams. We must congratulate and encourage them.

2. Football

 The section has been very active in the year. They held over 40s
tournament which was then followed by the Easter tournament in the
       month of April 2007.

 The section had friendly matches in the month of June 2007. They played
12 games and won 2 drew 2 and lost 8.

 Taifa Ngano Tournament - The tournament attracted twelve teams who
battled out for the Trophy and price money. We witnessed capacity
crowds coming to watch these matches. The final match took place on 9th
September 2007 pitting Green Eagles FC up against Vimbwanga FC. The
finals were held on 9th September 2007. The winning team Green Eagles

against Kenya Poly RFC and won 47 - 7. Mathew Musita was nominated
to play for the national team in the Tusker Safari Sevens Tournament.
This is a great feat by a player from the Club

 The section registered their first win in the Kenya Cup at home by beating
Mean Machine by 12 - 5. They also played against Mwamba FC and they
lost 14 nil. Our boys have been consistent in their training and we hope
that they will continue winning matches.

and Masinde Muliro University team etc. The function was well attended
with a turnout of 16 teams. The winners of the main trophy were
Mwamba RFC who also won the KRFU Sevens Circuit. MSC Rugby team
       won the bowl.

 As is seen in this report, the team has made us proud. The team has
moved a notch higher in terms of rating. Some of the players got frequent
callings for trials in the national sevens squad. The section has been
receiving assistance from the Coach John Bryson assisted by former Kenya
       international Oscar Osir.

open held at Safari Beach Hotel where he managed to win the plate

6. Snooker

 The section held the Wason Trophy Handicap Tournament. Sixteen year
old Zul Namajee a student at Agakhan Academy Mombasa won the
Trophy He beat Rajen Malde by four frames to three in a best of seven
frames final played on Tuesday 31st July, 2007.

 In a very well contested match both players played some excellent
snooker and at one stage it seemed Zul would win it easily after going
into a three frames to one lead but Rajen came back very strongly to
equalise and make it a winner take all last frame. The last frame was
going neck to neck till Zul broke away on the last two reds with two
consecutive blacks, which gave him a big lead and at this stage Rajen
needed snooker with Zul making sure of the title by potting the pink to
       end the game.

 I, your chair, was at hand to witness the final, and had the honour to give
away the trophies to the worthy winners. The sponsors of the tournament
were Mr. Dhiru Shah and the Wason family.

The winners were as follows: -

Highest Break Junior Yuvraj Kotecha - 27 Points

7. Tennis

 The Cargill Open Junior Tennis Tournament was held between 13th and 17th
August 2007. The tournament drew 40 entries with children of various ages
and abilities, most of the kids were part of the junior tennis development
program and Mombasa Sports Club members.

 The section sponsored MOI DAY JUNIOR OPEN – which was held on
10th and 14th October 2007. The event attracted 51 junior players
ranging from 7 years to 16 years consisting on 10 girls and 41 boys. The
teams were slotted into age groups and had lots of fun. After rewarding
the winners, and the runners up with trophies, all the participants got
certificates of participation. It is hoped that the section will continue
nurturing young players and helping them grow into sturdy sportsmen and

 The section had a Junior Tennis Tournament, the Coast Lawn Tennis
Association Junior Open. This was the 5th National Ranking Junior
Tournament held at the Mombasa Sports Club this year. Another
       tournament {the Inter freight} Junior Open was held from 18th - 22nd
December 2007. All of our juniors are currently ranked amongst the top
10 players in their respective age groups nationally. It is a pleasure to
see so many young and talented players using the courts on a daily basis,
and the number of children entering the tournaments is steadily

 The week-end again saw 51 entries across all the age groups and
competition was fierce in the older age groups while the younger ones just
       had a lot of fun.

8. Bridge

They held their Annual General Meeting on 28th February, 2007. They had an
average of 3 to 4 tables (12 to 16 members) playing every Wednesday. They did
not play bridge on few Wednesdays because of not enough bridge players. They
arranged one open bridge tournament and had nine tables.

They had a very tough year. They had to work hard even to get 3 to 4 tables.
The members do not enjoy playing 3 to 4 tables every week as there is no
competition. They also held an annual tournament on 17th February 2008
9. Bowling

The Coast Open Bowling Tournament was held over the Easter weekend
[2007]. The section raised some funds since the tournament was sponsored.

The green was closed from 15th February 2008 for the annual ground
maintenance for one month.

10. Basketball

During the month of August 2007, the team travelled to South coast for the
Shimba Hills Open Tournament where they performed well coming out as the
winners in their category. During the same month, Josphine Achieng who is a
professional player based in the United States held training clinics for the team.

The section had planned clinics for the Club member’s children but the response
was very poor. The section was not able to travel out of Mombasa for other
tournaments mainly due to financial constraints. Other tournaments that the
team participated in were the Peace Basketball Tournament at Matuga Girls
where they came out as winners in their category.

During the Jamhuri Cup National Tournament where the section defied all odds
to beat seasoned teams among them; Barclays Bank, Eaglets and Predators
from Nairobi to qualify for the final of the National event losing by a point to
National league side sprite storms. Players who won honours as most valuable
player awards at different events were: -

      Mildred Olumasi
      Purity Adhiambo
      Diana Sarah
      Fatuma Mohammed

The sections special recognition goes to the Coach Mr. Philip Onyango who has
maintained the training despite few outside tournaments. The Mombasa
Basketball Association held elections and our coach was elected as Vice

T H A N K Y O U A L L.

The Board of Trustees, Past Chairmen, Fellow Members, Ladies and Gentlemen,
thank you for placing your confidence in me and giving me this great honour to
serve as Chairman of this great Club.

I joined this Club way back in 1980 having been proposed by the then
Chairman of the Club Dr. Bachu Bram Bhatt. Over the years I have
regularly patronized the Club and have derived immense pleasure from playing
various games regularly and from the fellowship by attending many Club
functions with my family, infact my children literally grew up here. It has been
my second home.

This made me think that I need to do something in return for the Club and thus
offered my services to the Management. I have passed through the ranks to the
position of Vice Chairman and now finally as Chairman.

We as Management Committee for the ensuing year will aim to: -

Promote sports by maintaining and upgrading existing facilities and at
the same time looking to create new viable ones. The Gymnasium is
almost in its final stages. We intend to take on new projects as soon as
possible with of course the approval of the membership.

We will aim to strengthen the systems in place with emphasis on better
      service delivery to our members.

We intend to enforce the by laws and policies of the Club that will help us
to create a condusive environment for members to relax and enjoy the
      facilities of the Club.

These objectives can only be achieved in a cosmopolitan Club like ours by
maintaining complete harmony and avoid situations that can degenerate
into conflicts, therefore, we seek your cooperation and good will and
together we will endeavour to take this Club forward.

Finally, I take this opportunity to compliment the outgoing Chairman Mr.
Patrick Ochwa and his team for doing an excellent job.

                               ~THE END~
