                      GDPS® can work with IBM as well as other Equipment
            Manufacturer (OEM) disk vendors, as long as the vendor meets
            the required Metro Mirror, and z/OS Global Mirror functions.
            Hitachi, Ltd. has implemented these functions in its Hitachi
            Universal Storage Platform™ V/VM (USP V/VM) and this
            document describes the GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/XRC
            qualification testing performed in the IBM GDPS Solution Test
            lab for GDPS/PPRC & GDPS/XRC using the Hitachi Universal
            Storage Platform™ V/VM hardware.

 Executive Summary
                   In order to protect their businesses and IT
investments, many customers have implemented one or a
combination of the available GDPS® solutions enhancing the
continuous availability characteristics and enabling automated,
advanced        disaster      recovery          for     their    business       critical
applications. Each of the GDPS solutions are based upon a
different     advanced        copy           technology:        Metro    Mirror      for
GDPS/PPRC, z/OS Global mirror for GDPS/XRC and Global Mirror
for GDPS/GM.

  These non-proprietary remote copy architectures, implemented
on IBM storage hardware, have also
been licensed by some enterprise
storage      vendors.          This         allows
customers the flexibility to select
the    disk     subsystems         that       best
match their requirements and to
mix and match disk subsystems
from     different      storage         vendors
within    the    context      of    a        single
solution, GDPS, while retaining the
investment they have made in the
GDPS solution itself as well as in the
skills to manage GDPS and the copy
technology.       To this end,                IBM has established a GDPS®
Qualification Program to validate that an enterprise storage
vendor's      implementation            of     the    advanced        copy     services

architecture meets the GDPS requirements.

  Hitachi,      Ltd.,    as    an       enterprise          storage     vendor,     has
implemented        the     Metro        Mirror        and    z/OS     Global      Mirror
technologies on its disk subsystems and the Hitachi TagmasStore
hardware was the first disk subsystem to be qualified under the
GDPS® Qualification Program for GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/XRC.
Within this test session, the USP-V/VM Hardware has been
qualified.

                Introduction
           For many years now, IBM has been improving the quality of
       ®
GDPS       code delivery by conducting in-depth testing of both the
functional aspects of the solution as well as its integration with
various     IBM   products   in   a   variety   of   configurations.   The
implementation of some of the IBM copy technologies by non-IBM
manufacturers has introduced the need to validate the compatibility
and interoperability of non-IBM equipment with GDPS®. To satisfy
this requirement, IBM has launched a GDPS qualification test
program for non-IBM vendors. Hitachi, who have implemented the
IBM technologies Metro mirror (PPRC) and z/OS Global Mirror (XRC)
on their disk subsystems, is the first storage vendor to go through
with this qualification. The Hitachi disk subsystems, installed in the
IBM GDPS Solution Test lab configuration, have been used during
execution of the entire GDPS qualification test suite (contents of
which are described later in this document). The results obtained
and described in this document can be dependent on the various
levels of the software, hardware and microcode involved and as
such, do not reduce the need for customers to test their own
configuration.

         GDPS® Overview
         GDPS®   offers   three   different   solutions    based   on   the
underlying mirroring technology:

     •   The GDPS® solution, based on the IBM Metro Mirror copy
         technology (formerly known as Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy,
         PPRC), is referred to as GDPS/PPRC or GDPS/HM.

     •   The GDPS® solution based on the z/OS Global Mirror copy
         technology (formerly known as extended Remote Copy,
         XRC), is referred to as GDPS/XRC.

     •   The GDPS® solution based on the IBM Global Mirror copy
         technology is referred to as GDPS/Global Mirror or
         GDPS/GM.

Only GDPS/PPRC (with & without the xDR feature) and GDPS/XRC
have been tested during this qualification test session.

      Metro Mirror (PPRC) is a hardware copy technology that
synchronously mirrors data residing on a set of disk volumes, called
the primary volumes, to secondary disk volumes typically in a
secondary site, up to 300 fiber km away. The IBM Parallel Sysplex®
clustering technology is designed to enable resource sharing, data
sharing and dynamic workload balancing. When configured properly,
enterprises can now dynamically manage workloads across multiple
sites enabling them to achieve high levels of availability while using
their resources effectively. The GDPS/PPRC solution builds on these
high-availability technologies, providing autonomic functions and
numerous automation facilities to facilitate continuous availability
and effective, fast disaster recovery. The GDPS/PPRC HyperSwap™
function enables transparent switching from the primary PPRC disks
to the secondary disks, extending Parallel Sysplex availability to the
disk subsystem, providing continuous availability in the event of
planned and/or unplanned disk outages. With the GDPS/PPRC
HyperSwap™ Manager solution, customers can enjoy the benefits of
HyperSwap even if multiple sites are not available and the Parallel
Sysplex is configured in one site. The GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/PPRC
HyperSwap     Manager      solutions    are    data-type     independent.
Furthermore, either solution can manage PPRC on behalf of
Distributed Systems, and can provide a consistent recovery point for
z/OS and/or Open Systems data. This is especially important for

multi-tier applications where both z/OS and Open Systems data is
updated within a single unit-of-work. With the Multiplatform
Resiliency for System z feature (Referred as xDR in this document)
all these capabilities are extended to any application hosted under
any z/VM guest or z/Linux Lpar.

      z/OS Global Mirror (XRC) is a combined hardware and
software asynchronous copy technology. The application I/O is time
stamped and signaled completed when the data update to the
primary disk is completed. Subsequently, a DFSMSdfp™ component
called the System Data Mover (SDM), typically running in the
recovery site (Site2), asynchronously offloads data from the primary
storage subsystem’s cache, sorts the offloaded data in timestamp
sequence and updates the secondary disk volumes. Since XRC is an
asynchronous data replication technique, the secondary site can be
located thousands of miles from the primary site.     GDPS/XRC, a
disaster recovery solution, simplifies the task of managing the XRC
configuration and provides automation facilities to facilitate fast,
automated failover of the production workload to the recovery site,
once initiated.

        V and VM Overview

               Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™ V and VM are advanced
     storage services platform in the industry. These offer the scalability,
     performance, high availability and advanced storage functionality to
     satisfy all data center storage requirements for both open systems
     and mainframe environments.

               Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™ V with Hitachi
     Dynamic Provisioning™ software, the first enterprise class storage
     implementation     of   thin    provisioning      software,   provides   the
     foundation for Hitachi Services Oriented Storage Solutions, a new
     architecture that enables IT departments to tailor and offer a wide
     range of storage services based on the value to the business. With
     its powerful controller-based virtualization, Hitachi Data Systems is
     in a unique position to package and deliver storage services across
     heterogeneous storage assets, whether file, object or block-based.
     Powered by an enhanced Hitachi Universal Star Network™ V
     crossbar switch architecture with faster internal processors, 4Gb/sec

           As    integral    components    of     Services   Oriented    Storage
    Solutions   from   Hitachi   Data   Systems,      the    Universal   Storage
    Platform V and the Universal Storage Platform VM provide the
    architectural foundation for matching application requirements to
    different classes of storage. Services Oriented Storage Solutions
    have proven their ability to lower costs, extend lifetime value, and
    simplify management activities. The Universal Storage Platform
    family enables customer to deploy applications within a new
    framework, fully leverage—and add value to—current investments,
    and more closely align IT and business objectives. The Universal
    Storage Platform V and the Universal Storage Platform VM provide
    the high performance (Universal Storage Platform V) that meets
    data storage requirements at the largest organizations. These
    models excel at meeting critical, day-today needs for data storage,
    archiving, and business continuity. These systems let the user
    combine     externally   attached   Hitachi    and   non-Hitachi     storage
    systems to create large storage pools.



           The Universal Storage Platform leverages the unique and
    proven Hitachi Universal Star Network™ architecture, making it the
    industry’s highest performing (Universal Storage Platform V) and
    most scalable storage system. The Universal Storage Platform V
    delivers as many as 4.5 million IOPS and unifies data and storage
    services across as much as 247 petabytes (PB) of storage

(equivalent to 62 million average laptops). The Universal Storage
Platform VM delivers as many as 1.2 million IOPS and unifies data
and storage services across as much as 96PB of storage. Both offer
industrial-strength   virtualization,    replication,   and   migration
capabilities and use a common management interface across
heterogeneous storage systems, simplifying storage management
and reducing management costs.

                 As companies extend business-critical applications on their
         mainframe servers, they also seek compatible high-capacity, high-
         performance storage to manage growing stores of data. For over 20
         years, Hitachi, Ltd has provided mainframe technology to business
         and industry, including solutions for z/OS, z/VM, and TPF.

     Hitachi Mainframe Software Portfolio

                 Hitachi has introduced many software innovations such as
         Hitachi     Universal   Volume    manager,     Hitachi   TrueCopy™
         asynchronous remote replication, Hitachi Universal Replicator and
         Hitachi ShadowImage™ software. Hitachi storage is compatible

      Qualification test description
                The primary objective of this qualification testing was to
         validate the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™ V/VM usage within
         a GDPS/PPRC with the xDR feature enabled and GDPS/XRC
         environment.    Validating the USP or GDPS® code themselves was
         not specifically targeted. The scenarios specifically related to server
         management capabilities of GDPS were not included in the test case
         portfolio. Additionally,   some performance measurements           were
         performed on the HyperSwap and Freeze test cases only.



GDPS/PPRC test

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
                 The configuration used for this test was a GDPS/PPRC
         Single-site    workload    (also   known    as    an     active/standby
         configuration). The objective of the exercise was to test the
         functionality of the USP-V in a GDPS/PPRC environment, not to test
         performance     (except    for   Some   HyperSwap      test   cases)   or
         throughput. No attempt was made to optimize the configuration for
         throughput.

              The Site1 configuration is comprised of one Coupling facility
(CF1), an alternate GDPS/PPRC controlling system (C1) and 3
production systems: One running z/OS (P1), one running Linux
(LN1) & one running z/VM hosting 3 guests Linux (SuSe) in one
cluster. In Site2 there is the GDPS/PPRC Controlling system (C2)
and another Coupling facility (CF2). The C1, C2 and P1 systems are
in the same “Parallel SYSPLEX”.                              All system (Production and
Controlling) run with their system and application data residing on
the USP-V. All the production data, system and application, is
PPRCed to the secondary USP V disk subsystem. The “SYSPLEX”
files (Couple Datasets - CDS) were allocated on primary and
secondary USP-V devices and only the Logger CDS was mirrored.

CODES LEVELS AND HARDWARE SETTINGS
       A. Hardware levels:

            CPU        : IBM System Z9 2094-S18 Driver 67 level in LPAR
                        mode.

            Storage    : Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™ V (Hitachi USP-
                        V) series products at code level 60-03-24.

                        The Hitachi USP storage system has various options
                        which may be set depending on the environment in
                        which it is used. The following system options were
                        set for the GDPS/PPRC testing.

                        Mode 114: This mode allows the user to dynamically
                        change the direction of the PPRC links and allows
                        dynamic port mode setting (RCP/LCP for serial,
                        Initiator/RCU target for fiber-channel) through PPRC
                        CESTPATH and CDELPATH commands.

                    This mode is required in a PPRC environment.

                    Mode 484: Displaying PPRC path QUERY information
                    in the FC interface format. When using the IBM host
                    functions (PPRC, GDPS etc.), mode 484 can be set
                    for displaying the PPRC path QUERY information in
                    the FC interface format.

            D. Disk subsystem layout

              The HITACHI USP-V subsystems were configured with 5090 devices
              (3390-3) across 35 LSS:

                       1 LSS for Ksys system disks
                       2 LSS dedicated to the infrastructure devices (zOS
                       Production System disks).
                       1 LSS dedicated for z/VM devices
                       1 LSS dedicated for z/Linux devices
                       30 LSS with base devices for which aliases are defined.
                       All LSS have devices reserved for FlashCopy purpose.

SCENARIOS CHECKED
                All the test scenarios executed were “DASD-Oriented”.
         Scenarios specifically geared towards “SYSPLEX” events or designed
         to test server management aspects of GDPS were removed.

              A. Basic test:

                    Use all GDPS/PPRC Remote copy options with the full
                    configuration loaded.

                    Generate a variety of freeze events (Either through
                    commands or via hardware event triggers).

         As the objective was primarily to validate the functioning of Hitachi

                  With GDPS/XRC, the GDPS code is installed on the recovery
         site (Site2) systems. In Site1 we have configured one                                  production
         system (P1) and in Site2 we have the GDPS/XRC Controlling system
         (C1), the SDMPLX (systems C2 & C3), one coupling facility (CF2)
         and one backup LPAR (P1 Backup) which is used to restart the
         production system in Site2. Only the Controlling system (C1) and
         the SDMPLEX systems (C2 & C3) comprise the GDPS “SYSPLEX”. As
         with the GDPS/PPRC tests, the USP-V disks were used as well for
         production, secondary disks, SDM and GDPS/XRC Controlling disks.

E. Disk subsystem layout

  The HITACHI USP-V subsystems were configured with 5090 devices
  (3390-3) across 35 LSS:

           1 LSS for Ksys system disks
           2 LSS dedicated to the infrastructure devices (zOS
           Production System disks).
           1 LSS dedicated for z/VM devices
           1 LSS dedicated for z/Linux devices
           30 LSS with base devices for which aliases are defined.
           All LSS have devices reserved for FlashCopy purpose.

                Since   validating   XRC   functionality   itself   was   not   the
         Objective of this testing, in order to avoid unnecessary failures of
         XRC recovery processes, we did not try to run in constrained
         environments. The I/O activity is concentrated primarily on the
         Infrastructure LSS (8 and 9) and some I/O Drivers have been
         launched to create some I/O activity in all other LSS. The
         GDPS/XRC Remote Copy panel shown below summarizes the layout
         used to test the environment:

SCENARIOS CHECKED
                 All the scenarios were “DASD-Oriented”, that is primarily
         those test cases involving XRC disk operations were included in the
         test suite.

              A. Basic test:

                       Use all GDPS/XRC Remote copy options with the full
                       configuration loaded.

B. Planned actions:

    Start SDM sessions and COUPLE them into a Master
    session in a script.

    UNCOUPLE one SDM and Stop it leaving the other SDMs
    active.

    Suspend volumes and take a consistent Flash copy on
    Site1 and Site2 Hitachi USP-V disks.

    Remove (Withdraw) any Flash Copy session on the
    Secondary disks.

     Start and stop a Flash Copy session for Secondary site
    using the Master session to drive it.

    Use all flash copy options (Copy, Nocopy, Incremental)
    as well as NOCOPY2COPY.

    Use FC0 suspend statement (Consistent Flash Copy on
    XRC volumes)

    Test a full disaster recovery scenario using the tertiary
    group of disks to IPL the production system in the
    recovery site. Repeated with sessions coupled and
    uncoupled.

                    Stop Secondary, Flashcopy & restart Secondary
                        Start Backup Lpar Using flashcopy disk.

                  Move all SDM sessions from their normal location to their
                  alternate location and then return back them to their
                  normal situation.



GDPS/XRC test results
               All the scenarios described have been successfully run, and
        results obtained were as expected. Since the primary objective of
        this qualification test session was to verify the implementation of
        the advanced copy services architecture in the HITACHI USP
        hardware, no performance data has been collected and therefore no
        performance follow-up has been done.
