New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ is hosting this symposium under the President’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative. The program, organized by the U.S. Sma ll Business Administration, is part of a national effort to raise awareness about the agency’s programs and services, and to provide free educational resources to small business owners. Ron Bew, district director of SBA’s Richmond District Office, remarked, “This symposium can assist Tidewater entrepreneurs and small business owners in gaining access to capital, locating local sources for technical assistance, and opening the doors of opportunity to more than $300 billion in federal contracting opportunities. It is through the positive efforts of Bishop Barnett K. Thoroughgood that we can provide this type of program that can change a life of small business owners, one American at a time.” In the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953 Congress created the U.S. Small Business Administration, whose function is to "aid, counsel, assist, and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns." Since its founding more than a half-century ago, the U.S. Small Business Administration has delivered about 24 million loans, loan guaranties, contracts, counseling sessions and other forms of assistance to small businesses.
