                                             FAYE’S GOING FOR GOLD
Yound gymnast Faye Padden is again going for gold, after
bagging five top medals at a top gymnastics competition.
Faye, who has just turned 14, has been a gymnastics fan
                                            ever since she can remember.
At Stockport School of Gymnastics’ Easter Competition,
Faye triumphed for Rochdale to achieve five gold medals
                                            and a trophy.
"Apparently when I was little, I couldn’t sit still," said Faye.
"My childminder told my parents they should put me in for
gymnastics and I’ve loved it ever since." Faye now trains at
Rochdale Olympics Gymnastics Club and gets plenty of
practice in at her school, Siddal Moor Sports College.
She has also started to train younger members of the club.
"It’s nice because they are in the same position I was in
when I was there age," she said. "I can relate to what it was
like and try to make things easier for them. I love the sport so it’s good to be able to pass some of my
experience on."

       WHERE’S GRAHAM?...
He’s actually back in sunny Rochdale (Ha Ha!), but here’s his final ramblings from his
little 7 week jaunt …………
Honestly New Zealand is BIG !! When you travel round here you do it in Hours not Kilometres.
26th March - Borrowed a car and drove up to Picton (6 Hours). This is where the ferry goes to the
North Island. It is a coast road and you pass all the seals coming out of the sea and sunning
themselves. They don't bother when you walk right up to them.
27th March - Had a local breakfast, Scrambled Eggs and Fresh Salmon. Took a 4 hours ride on the
Mail Boat, which delivers mail to the private houses in the coves. Then off to the Cook monument. No
wonder he visited these islands six times.
28th March - Went to a German Beer Festival with lots of singing and Oom Pah Pah.
30th March - It is only 28 degrees today, but still had a BBQ outside. Don't know if I told you, but the
sun rises in the West and sets in the East ??
31st March - Rode into town today to invesitgate some more, and found Ragiora Gymnastics Club by
chance. They have not many children but they are very good (we must do an invitational).
1st April - Watched one of the family play footlball for one of the local teams.
2nd April - We are off on a 3 day runaround and saw the Glaciers. They are very chilly when you are
near them, and the water that forms a river from them is white. The actual glaciers have blue streaks in
them.
3rd April - Visitied the famous "Bungy Bridge" where it all started. It looks easy - but we didn't have
time to stay.
4th April - Called in at the Moeraki Boulders, these are round rocks about 5 metres diameter which
have fallen from the cliff face onto a beach. They are 1000's of years old. Some of them have broken
open like eggs and the insides are all crystalized into weird shapes. They have fallen from the cliffs for a
length of 50 metres, and there is nowhere else in the world that has them.
Up to date again, so I will say Good Luck for the future competition until I see you again.
Bcnu, Graham

Bags packed and off to Singapore.
Friday 11th April - Wow !! This place is hot and humid. Stepped out of the air conditioned hotel and my
glasses steamed up. Been to all the touristy places including "Raffles Hotel" and had to drink a
"Singapore Sling". You haven't been there unless you do that.
Saturday 12th April - Had a tour of the place and went to a Chinese Temple, a Budda Temple, a
Gemstone Factory and the Orchid Gardens. We saw the only Orchid that has a scent, a bit like vanilla.
Then onwards to a Night Safari where they let you go through the grounds with the Lions and Tigers,
followed by some dancers and fire eating shows.
Sunday 13th April - Went for a walk down Orchard Road where all the "Posh" shops are, but seeing as
it was too hot, (32 degrees), I went into the Art Gallery and Museum where there is air conditioning. On
returning to the Hotel I was met by my Rep who took me to Singapore Airport which is four times as big
as Manchester's, and this is where I take my last flight to get back to you all. This journey takes thirteen
hours.
I arrived at Manchester Airport, and on to collect my bags for the last time. I thank everybody concerned
that my bags have been at the right place at the right time, with all the take off's and landings being
scheduled correctly. I think there has been 12 take off's and 8 bag changes, that's not bad is it?
Sounds like something Cheryl had organised.
So, I will be seeing you soon, and many thanks to Cheryl, for adding it in the News N Views and keeping
you all up to date. I hope you enjoyed it.
Bcnu, Graham.

Another mode of transport for today !! This is the nearest I got to white water rafting with Keith, who I
                                                                                           was staying with.

    ROGC’S WEE FLOOD…..
A few weeks ago many of you may have noticed that the back room was out of action. This was due to
a little leak we had from a water tank upstairs which came straight through the roof and all over our floor
rendering the room out of action until we got it sorted!!!

As a result of this the water tank, and the boiler had to be drained, which left us with no water supply to
the toilets and the wash basins! Since this occurrence David Elcock (ROGC’s Chairman), along with
many other club members, have made themselves the Council’s worst nightmare. David has not let up
in an attempt to get this problem sorted as a matter of urgency. However, the Council don’t know the
meaning of the word !!

HERE’S WHERE THE SITUATION CURRENTLY STANDS…………..
22/4/08 - We have been informed by Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council that the necessary repairs
/ remedial work to reinstate the water supply to the hand wash basins and the toilets will be carried out.
Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council have yet to confirm when the contractors will be able to start
work, and once started the work will take about a week to complete.
Thank you for your continued patience and help. The Committee.

Repair work started on the boiler on Friday 25th April, and you never by the time you get this newsletter
we may have out water supply back on !!
                “THANK YOU’S”
The Club has had yet another hectic few weeks with one thing and another…………….

I would personally like to thank all the parents and helpers who have been constantly up and down like
yo-yo’s during the training sessions filling up the toilets with water so we can keep the club running. As
explained on the previous page we had a slight leak through the roof in the back room which ultimately
resulted in our water supply being cut off. Many, many pairs of hands have been spending hours and
hours armed with buckets and the hose pipe keeping the toilets topped up to enable us to keep the club
open. Without this help I am in no doubt that we would have been forced to shut down until the problem
was resolved. Thanks for all your help folks, and hopefully soon the water supply will be re-instated and
you will never have to fill a toilet again!!! I can always find you something else to do though !!
Cheryl

E-MAIL RECEIVED 15.4.08 FROM TRISH LOFTUS (CHARLOTTE'S
MUM):-
Hi Cheryl, Just a quick line to say a big Thank You for all you and your team do for Charlotte. I have just
viewed the results from Saturday (Phil Tighe) and was astounded at the amount of competitors and
really just how well Lottie did! I think it's marvelous as she is still only 6. It's all down to Abbi's patience
(and boy do you need plenty of that working with Lottie!!) and also the pure passion that Lottie has for
the sport. She is always upside down or in splits even in the middle of Asda! (I' ve seen a few men wince
when she suddenly drops into splits in the middle of the aisle). Once again Thank you to all of you, I feel
really proud of her achievement so far even if she doesn’t quite understand it yet. Pride is not enough for
her I think, her attitude is she can't polish pride! She wants medals and it's that desire that I hope will
make her a great gymnast one day.
Regards Trish Loftus

A puzzle for our “older” members to ponder over …………
During a recent gymnastics competition, four girls competed in three events, the
vault, the beam and the floor. Chloe came third on the floor. The girl who came
second in the vault, won the beam event. The girl who came second on the beam
won the floor. Jessica beat Alex in every event. The girl who won the vault came
second on the floor. Caris came last in the vault. Can you determine who finished
where in each event?

    Gymnasts Vault Beam Floor
     Jessica
      Chloe
      Alex
      Caris

Can you name these gymnastics skills?
                        “GYMNASTICS
                           IS FUN”

When you're feeling down because your body hurts
When your hands are torn and your muscles ache
When the beam's so high and you feel you'll fall
When you feel you can't and want to stop it all
When the sprung floor feels like concrete
When you feel you're spent and can't compete
And the bars, they seem so wide apart
And vaulting now is not in your heart
When all of this makes you feel like the pits
It's time to relax and think a bit
Of the hours and hours of hard work put in
It's time to collect the dividend
You know why you're here, what it's all about
You know there's no time at all for self-doubt
So get up, with both your body and your mind
And keep it going because you're going to find...
YOU CAN...you can do it with a little more grit
Get up, breathe deep - and GO FOR IT!!

the money will be used to purchase some more much needed new pieces of
equipment for you all to train on.

WELL DONE SO FAR EVERYONE AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

AND HERE’S WHAT YOU ARE RAISING THE MONEY FOR……………

                                                 The Powerboard
The latest in springboard development - designed for the needs of gymnasts and
coaches alike, we can now launch the Powerboard - a fully adjustable springboard
              from Continental.
Developed in conjunction with gymnasts and coaches at Lilleshall National Sports
Centre - the home of British Gymnastics this springboard is now available.
The springboard comes complete with five permanent springs and four removable
springs - this enables the springboard to be configured as a "hard" or a "soft" board,
and the exact performance can be tailored to suit the individual gymnast.
The unique springing system features easy to remove and insert springs using the
specially designed tool. The design totally eliminates the trapped fingers, cuts and
spring-crushing required by some other boards. The spring insertion and removal
tool is clipped in place and stored within a storage clip inside the springboard.
Handles are incorporated in strategic points based on the board's centre of gravity to
enable it to be carried simply with one hand.

BUT THESE THINGS DON’T COME CHEAP………………£464 EACH !!!
AND WE WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE TWO OF THEM
SO KEEP THOSE SMARTIE TUBES FLOWING IN. YOU ARE ALL DOING WELL SO
FAR BUT WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.
                                     REMEMBER
ONLY SMARTIES HAVE THE ANSWER !!!!!!!!

Following this list of achievements Brenda (following a little bit of convincing) stopped
training as she broke the news that she was expecting, and went off on her maternity
leave. Now the proud mum of Rebecca who is about to hit her 1 st birthday and soon
to get married (or so she keeps telling us!), Brenda has returned to her coaching at
the gym passing on all of her experiences to many children in the club. Also a
valuable coach when it comes to needing cover to run sessions etc…and recently
commenced a class for disabled children whom she teaches during the day.
Hopefully Brenda will stay part of our growing team in years to come and help
develop the club towards what lies ahead in the future…………………

E-MAIL RECEIVED 30/4/08 :-

Hi Cheryl,
How have you been?
As you are already aware Chloe has decided that she no longer
wants to do Gymnastics much to the disappointment of myself
and Diane.
We have been trying for months to get her to change her mind
and had hoped that switching to two days a week would help.
However she has made up her mind and we don't want to force
her to do something which she doesn't want to do.
As you know we recently purchased the new squad tracksuit
which is now surplus to requirements along with her squad
leotard.
I would be grateful if you could see if anyone would like to buy them from us as it would
be a shame for them to go to waste as they are like new.
We would like to thank yourself and everyone at the Gym for all your help and support
over the last few years and we will miss you all also as we made some friends along the
way, we are due to relocate to South Wales in the next few months and we
would appreciate it if you could pass on our thanks to Graham, Fiona, Frankie, Brenda,
Vicky, the 'T' Birds, the pink ladies and all the other coaches and parents who we got to
know.
We will miss you all.
Thanks again and all the best!
Lee, Diane, Chloe and Josh
