durable wallet with its unmistakeable feel has also picked up the "iF product design award
2006".

winning wallet
Thanks to Tyvek® from DuPont not only does the pen wallet look good, it feels good,
plus it’s tough enough for everyday use
Luxembourg, March 2006. Slick, striking and innovative all rolled into one, that was the
brief for the packaging required by STABILO International GmbH, part of the Schwan-
STABILO Group in Heroldsberg, to launch the “point 88 mini”, a mini version of its
classic long-established point 88 Fineliner. The new pocket-sized packaging for the world
famous Fineliners available in a wide range of colours was designed to combine retail and
consumer packaging all in one, with high utility value. These Mini-Fineliners are now
available in an unmistakeable wallet, developed jointly by Wepro AG, Wolfhausen,
Switzerland and its German distribution partner pro in motion, Erlangen. The wallet
features all-over four-colour printing on the outside with a photo of what’s inside, product
info and the all-important barcode for the POS. It’s designed to have a pleasant feel and
soften up over time, with superior tear resistance into the bargain. The new “STABILO”
wallet has Tyvek® from DuPont to thank for these features, a polyethylene-based non-
woven material that functions like a fabric with incredibly high tear strength and puncture
resistance. This packaging innovation even merited an “iF product design award” in the
Packaging Category from iF Design (International Forum Design GmbH) in Hanover. This
internationally renowned and highly sought-after Oscar for the design world was
collectively presented to STABILO, Wepro and pro in motion on 9 March 2006.
Weprotek, the laminated film specially developed by Wepro from Tyvek® for highly
demanding applications, is a major factor in the dimensional stability of the fold-up wallet
simply held together by a decorative red rubber band, making it easy to open. It consists of
two layers of Tyvek®, combined with Typar®, a polypropylene intermediate layer, another
sheet product from DuPont. As the inner pouch of the wallet designed and produced by
Wepro containing the Mini-Fineliners lined up ready for use also consists of a
polyethylene sheet, the new “STABILO” wallet can be disposed of in an environmentally
sound manner once the Fineliners come to the end of their useful life. Market research

during the launch phase indicated that the new product packaging was generally well
received and STABILO is now selling its Mini-Fineliners in the Tyvek® wallet worldwide
in a choice of 3 packaging sizes containing 8, 12 and 18 Fineliners in assorted colours.
Wepro and pro in motion therefore also came up with the new packaging solution for
STABILO as they had already accumulated many years’ experience with Tyvek® and the
host of features it has to offer in other innovative packaging applications. Tyvek® is a
trademark of DuPont for its range of tough, durable sheet products made from 100% high-
density polyethylene (HDPE). The sheet is formed by spinning very fine fibres and then
bonding them with heat and pressure into a non-woven material. The brilliant white
Tyvek® Graphics products, specially tailored to graphic applications and the needs of the
packaging sector, boast an excellent printing surface with high opacity and at the same
time still offer chemical resistance and strength. Tyvek® combines the best properties of
paper, film and other synthetic products, is easy to convert and therefore is an ideal product
for a wide range of applications that call for high durability. In addition to packaging,
DuPont Tyvek® Graphics products are also used for labels and tags, banners, racing
numbers for sports events and weatherproof posters and even waterproof maps.
For the Fineliner wallets, Wepro uses the know-how it has accumulated to first print on
one side of the Tyvek® sheets using a sheet-fed offset process. The print process is a
standard offset print adapted to the particular material. The print quality is very good and is
also very durable. To put together the wallet ready for sale, Wepro then bonds the PE inner
pouch onto the non-printed side and punches out the wallets to the required size, following
exactly the same basic principle as for printed paper products. The red elastic band is then
finally attached to seal the wallet. In the run-up to launching the new Mini-Fineliners on
the market, STABILO also considered using clear sheet packaging (generally made from
PVC) with product-specific printed paper stickers. This idea was rejected though on the
grounds of the look and feel of the packaging, as Wepro and pro in motion came up with
the current packaging solution made from Tyvek®.

To offer support to converters and users of Tyvek®, DuPont launched the Tyvek® Graphics
EXPERT Programme in early 2004. It began in Germany and France and now boasts a
near complete network of experts covering all graphic applications. Since then almost 20
Tyvek® Graphics Experts have already qualified for the programme, among them Wepro
AG from Wolfhausen, Switzerland.
