NATIONAL UNION OF NAMIBIAN WORKERS (NUNW) PROJECT TITLE: EMPL OYMENT POLICIES AND POVERTY REDUCTION TRAINING TARGET GROUP: NATIONAL LEADERS STARTING DATE: JUNE 2004-10-15 DURATION: 6 DAYS PROJECT LANGUAGE: ENGLISH PREPARATION DATE: 24th MARCH 2004 AUTHOR: GERTRUDE JAMESON USIKU REGIONAL/ BRANCH ORGANISER, GENDER CO-ORDINATOR AND HIV/AIDS FOCAL PERSON BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATIONS Namibia is a small in dependent country with a population of 1,7 million and also only 14 years of independence. Although we do not count under the poverty reduction strategy countries there is a need to plan ahead. The government in December 1998 developed a poverty reduction strategy (PRSP) for Namibia funded by UNDP. As we experience poverty in some regions in the Country, the training of national leaders of trade union on poverty alleviation is essential. To strengthen the organization and to improve their functions, the involvement of trade unions in an increasing number of social and economic issues in recent years it has become even more vital for union expand their training activities. For their leaders on PRSP, to keep up with the changing trends. This will also enable the leaders not only to concentrate on other trade union issues but to include poverty alleviation as this is having a direct effect on trade union members. In view of the above this training will focus on all trade union affiliates of NUNW to see to it that employment policies are in place. The creation of a department dealing with employment policies and PRSP will also enable the leaders to deal directly with PRSP. The training will have great emphasis on the role that trade unions should play in the process of poverty reduction for it’s members and the society at large. Poverty in Africa is perceived as a deadly threat to political stability, social cohension , and the environmental health of the planet. Much of the blame of the continents poverty lies with bad economic policies. DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES The development objective is to contribute towards the training of trade union leaders to employment policies and PRSP through meaning full participation on forums and debates in national, regional or international tripartite discussions and decision makings. Immediate objectives The immediate objectives of this project on training are To improve the understanding of trade union leaders. Face the main issues and challenges faced by trade unions. Understand the measures, actions and steps that trade unions can take to overcome the employment related problems facing them by drawing up policies and strategies to address the problem of poverty. To utilize the power of information technology (internet) as communication.
