SPONTANEITY OF REDOX REACTIONS

VIEWS: 58 PAGES: 1

									SPONTANEITY OF REDOX REACTIONS

 The redox reaction will be spontaneous if the oxidizing agent in the reaction
 is higher than the reducing agent.

           E0 = E0red (reduction process) - E0red (oxidation process)

                 Thus, E0 will be positive for the case where the reaction is
                 spontaneous

                   E0 will be zero for a redox reaction at equilibrium

                 E0 will be negative for the case where the reaction is
                 spontaneous in the reverse direction

                                  E0 = 0 V - 0.34 = -0.34V
           Since this value is negative, this redox reaction is not spontaneous as
           written.

                            E0 = -0.339 + 0.769 = +0.43 V.
 Since E is positive, the reaction is spontaneous.
