Top 20 paint companies: listing the best: Louis McColloch has
compiled and listed the top 50 European coatings companies, by
volume in the European Coatings Review. Here we present a preview
of the top 20 coatings companies.
By McColloch, Louis

Date: Monday, November 1 2004
You are viewing page 1
Here we present the profiles of the leading top 20 paint and coatings
companies in Europe. The top 50 paint companies appear in full in the
European Coatings Review that appears in the PPCJ YEARBOOK
2005.
These top 20 companies were selected on the basis of the quantity of
paint in volume terms that they sell annually. Most of them have their
global headquarters in Europe or in the America's.
For the reader to fully appreciate the information, it is important to
understand our definition of Europe. In its shortened form it is EMEA
and includes Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the countries of the
former Soviet Union, the Middle east and Africa. So, for example, in
the complete Top 50 you will find companies from Israel, Jordan and
South Africa being featured. Perhaps surprisingly some of the world's
largest paint companies do not appear in our review. Companies like
Sherwin-Williams from the USA, Nippon, Kansai and DNT from
Japan. The reason is that the bar for entry has been set at about 100m
[euro] sales in Europe and that excludes certain otherwise very large
and important companies in the coatings industry.
Like saying 'new' or 'first' it is always presumptuous to use the words
'largest' and no doubt there are other companies out there who might
justifiably claim a place in this exclusive club. If there are we would
like to hear about them so they can be included next time.

Market Positioning
Akzo Nobel is not only the world's largest coatings company but also
the only one with the broadest portfolio. It has a significant presence
in all of the major market sectors except packaging and automotive
OEM where it sold its business in 1998 to PPG due to lack of
profitability. There are indications that it may be reconsidering its
position there, perhaps in view of the conventional wisdom in the
industry that being in OEM confers advantages in Refinish.
Commentary
Bolt-on acquisitions in mature markets. Pushing hard in Asia.
Strengthening distribution capability. As the biggest paint company in
the world, Akzo Nobel Coatings will continue to participate in the
consolidation of the global coatings industry.
Furthermore, we will continue to grow our business by a combination
of organic growth, driven by innovation and technology, and selective
acquisitions. At the same time, we will improve our performance. For
this we are working on simplifying our business processes, lowering
our cost base and maximizing our strength as a group. It is our
ambitious goal to achieve a return on investment of 30%.' Rudy van
der Meer- Akzo Nobel Board Member responsible for Coatings.
It would be reasonable to summarise Akzo Nobel's strategy as:
Growth through
* Bolt on acquisitions in mature markets
* Geographic emphasis on Asia, notably China
* Diversification (eg accident management services)
Profit through
* Lower costs
* Moving along the value chain (eg Deco merchants, Refinish
distributors, CV painting contractor) Focus through
* Divestment of non-coatings

Commentary
'The strategy of ICI Paints is to maintain and develop branded,
leading market positions in the global paints and coatings business
with a high market share in the countries in which it competes. Key to
this is the ability to understand consumers' needs for both products
and services and communicate through strong brands direct to each
market segment. Technology and innovation are also important
factors in the growth of ICI Paints.
Success is dependent on being first to market with innovative, value
adding products and services which meet real market needs. ICI
Paints benefits technologically from the colloid, polymer and particle
related science base and research carried out by other parts of the ICI
Group. ICI Paints' international spread ensures it can maximise
potential, enabling successful products and services to be rolled out
around the world.' ICI Paints website.
ICI's product/market strategies are:
* Aggressively maintain paints in North America
* Selectively maintain packaging coatings
* Aggressively grow paints in Asia
* Selectively grow paints in Europe and Latin America

Market Positioning:
Valspar's mission is to be the best coatings company in the world by
being:
* In the top five in global sales
* Number 1 or 2 and a technology leader in each of its target markets
* The leader in sales growth earnings growth and return on
investment
* The lowest cost supplier through integrating technology and
productivity improvements
Valspar plans to build its business on five principles:
* Customer focus
* Dedication to quality
* New technology and products
* Balanced growth
* Employee ownership
Commentary
Valspar's long-term objective is 15% growth in sales and earnings
through internal growth and acquisition. Also to be the lowest-cost
supplier with the leading customised technology. Valspar sees its
industrial product line facing one of its the biggest challenges as
traditional United States customers relocate to lower cost
manufacturing regions around the world.
It is addressing this 'off-shoring' by quickening the pace of its
industrial globalisation to maintain and enhance its position in wood,
coil and other industrial coatings.

Business Development
Under the name Sigma Studio, SigmaKalon introduced in Denmark a
franchise system, borrowing from features of its Sigma Service
Centres and the Polish Studio Dekoral shops. The franchise is aimed
at independent professional painters/entrepreneurs who will have the
opportunity to source 10-15% from external suppliers. Fifty studios
are planned for the Danish market during the next two years.
Market Positioning
SigmaKalon's market position based on value is:
Decorative The Netherlands No. 1 France No. 1 Hungary No. 1
Poland No. 1 Belgium No. 2 UK No. 3 European Industrial Markets
Coil Coatings No. 4 Powder Coatings (Benelux) No. 2 Special
Industrial Coatings (Benelux only) No. 2 Global Marine Market No. 4
Global Protective Market No. 5
Commentary
SigmaKalon was bought in March 2003 by Bain Capital for 1bn
[euro] from its former parent company, TotalFinaElf. Bain Capital,
which has more than $14 billion in assets under management, claims
a track record of providing resources and operational support to non-
core subsidiaries of large conglomerates.
SigmaKalon's core business is the supply of decorative coatings and
has leading positions in France, UK, Benelux, Poland and Hungary. It
is number two to Akzo Nobel in decorative coatings in Europe.
It looks to reduce complexity, achieve greater focus and create close
relationships with customers and consumers. Through a programme
of cost reductions it intends to grow margins to a position
commensurate with its market leadership.
The strategies include plans to develop existing leadership positions,
for example in the trade coatings sector and to take advantage of new
opportunities, for example in Eastern Europe and marine coatings. Its
goal is to become first choice supplier across its chosen activities and
distribution channels, by combining customer and consumer insight
with the best production, logistics and distribution platform.

In 2003 RPM announced the opening of RPM Europe SA in
Waterloo, Belgium mainly to increase its presence in Europe by
seeking and working with local businesses and manufacturing
companies interested in joining RPM but also to support all non-
European RPM companies to broaden market penetration of their
exported product lines. It plans to raise European sales from $180m to
$500m in 5 years.
Market Positioning
RPM has an established reputation as an industry consolidator, having
made 50 acquisitions in the last decade and 100 in the last four
decades. It pursues opportunities that are:
* Synergistic or bolt-on product line
Established consumer brands to augment existing lines and to sell
within existing distribution channels.
* Entrepreneurial niche market leaders Companies with sales of
between $10m and $100m whose entrepreneurial owners will stay and
continue to grow as part or a larger enterprise.
* Strategic acquisitions
Companies with substantial sales volume that can enhance its
presence in the specialty coatings industry
Commentary
RPM's growth strategy under Frank Sullivan is:
* Internal growth of 5% annually
* Acquisitions to match internal growth
* Enhanced profitability from restructuring and acquisition synergies
In connection with its 2002 re-incorporation as RPM International
Inc, RPM realigned its operating companies according to their
products, markets, customers and operating philosophy. Those
operating companies that tend to be entrepreneurial and serve niche
markets continue to be owned by RPM Inc. Operating companies that
primarily serve the consumer markets were transferred to RPM
Consumer Holding Company, wholly owned by RPM International
Inc. Ownership of operating companies that primarily serve industrial
markets was transferred to another wholly owned subsidiary of RPM
International Inc. RPM Industrial Holding Company.

first and making paint second. Its promise is comprehensive service
backed by custom made products and the latest production technology
in paints and coatings for the brand owner to sell direct to the end
user.
Commentary
Founded in 1948 selling to the professional painter, the private label
strategy was conceived in the 60s and given new impetus in the 70s
with the growth of US style DIY supermarkets.
The original concept was built on in the 80s and 90s with components
such as quality and environmental assurance systems, exclusive
colour ranges and other measures to improve the competitiveness of
its customers. Its operations have spread to more than 20 countries
and it claims a market share in Germany of more than 60% in its
chosen field.
Ostendorf goals are to retain its position in the German DIY paint
sector and become the clear European leader through quality and cost
leadership, partnership with important suppliers and management of:
* product and technology
* marketing
* service

Market Positioning
Jotun is market leader in decorative paints in Norway and among the
leaders in Sweden, Denmark and Iceland.
It holds a strong position in the Middle East and parts of
SoutheastAsia, and is focusing on several new markets in these
regions, with increased distribution of its Multicolor tinting machines.
It is a global number two to International in Marine and well placed to
capitalise on the migration of the sector to Korea, Japan and China.
Commentary
Jotun has an international network of production plants and sales
offices in Scandinavia, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, the Far
East, America, Australia and Africa, with 58 companies in 34
countries and 36 factories in 21 countries.
Jotun's vision is cost-effective and environmentally compliant
products and services of high quality for home, marine and industrial
use.
It aims to be a leading player in clearly defined market segments
worldwide, looking for long-term relationships with customers,
suppliers and employees. Its commitment is to meet or exceed
expectations in all aspects and to increase shareholder value through
profitable operations.
Jotun has carried out a major programme of restructuring and
efficiency improvement, and is reorganising its central staff and
support functions. Most of these functions will be transferred from the
group to the divisions so as to bring them closer to the market. It has
placed an ERP contract for several million dollars which will support
business-critical processes across international boundaries, including
applications for product development, manufacturing, supply chain
management, and financials. Its re-organisation into four divisions is
expected to lead to clearer segmentation of the business and to more
rapid financial improvement in selected markets.

Business Development
As well as building on its traditional strengths of continuous
development of its product ranges for facades, interiors and concrete
backed up by advisory services and practical support, Sto reports
particularly high growth rates being achieved by its 'Lotusan' water-
repellent coating (www.lotusan.de) inherited from the ispo
acquisition. It also has introduced a portal (www.imatro.de) for
painters, plasterers and builders.
Market Positioning
Sto markets exterior and interior insulation, finishing and acoustic
systems for the construction, renovation and protection of buildings.
It claims world leadership in the external wall insulation systems
sector.
Sto's mission is to research, develop, produce and market products
and services to maintain and improve the substance and functions of
walls, ceilings and floors, providing long-term protection from
damage, accompanied by services relating to colour and structure.
Commentary
Sto traces its history back more than 160 years to a small cement and
lime operation established in 1835 in Weizen, Germany. In 1955, it
pioneered and introduced the first quality synthetic resin wall coatings
in Europe. Sto introduced Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems
(EIFS) to the European market in 1963.
Sto describes the five mainstays of the Sto Group as:
* Sto AG providing the major part of the group's product range
* StoDesign developing colour and material concepts for architects,
specifiers and applicators
* StoCretec specialising in concrete protection and maintenance
* StoVerotec comprising curtain wall and combination facade
systems, acoustic systems and decorative profiles
* Inotec supplying machinery and tools for product application
Sto's long-term objectives are:
* to grow in Germany and abroad in turnover but especially in profit
* to achieve differentiation by its 'Strategic Design' programme of
pro-active solutions
* to exploit the potential of its Verotec business in facades, acoustic
systems and recycled glass profiles
* to expand it foreign business to at least 50% of group turnover
* to focus R&D activities on all-year-round capacity utilisation and
on product innovations
* to exploit trading on its 'imatro' website
* to continue strict cost management and productivity improvements

Business Development
In 2003 Hempel:
* reformulated most of its alkyd and emulsion decorative products
according to price and quality
* updated its decorative brand portfolio and retail shops in the Middle
East
* introduced a customer management concept in Marine,
concentrating services and logistics in key ports along the major
shipping lanes Hempel also plans to free up more resources to invest
in activities that can support the needs of the market. For example, in
the autumn of 2003 it decided to close down its plant in Pinneberg,
Germany and to supply from its plants in Portugal, France and its new
plant in Malaysia.
Market Positioning
With 24 factories, 53 sales offices and 150 stocking points around the
world, Hempel aims to leverage its global and local structure for
international activities in the Marine and Protective markets as well as
its regional position in Decorative.
It is a global number three to International and Jotun in Marine and
number one in Container with 97% of this business coming from
China.
Commentary
The legal position of Hempel is important to understand. Owned by
the J C Hempel Foundation since 1948, Hempel assets cannot be sold,
mortgaged, used as collateral for loans, nor in any way be disposed of
as long as the Foundation is in existence. Hempel's continuing goal,
beginning in 2000, is to move from a predominantly country-based
structure to a cost efficient, coherent, customer focused, knowledge-
based, one-company organisation. Its new strategy, 'Beyond Hempel
First 2005', and the new one company organisation aim at ensuring
simple procedures, clear responsibilities, efficient decision processes
and mutual trust by:
* working together as a team
* working closely with every single customer
* learning from other business areas, especially the service industry
* developing innovative and superior solutions for the market.

painter. Services such as its 7 colour studios, its well regarded Scala
colour system and its advertising and marketing programmes for
painters to enhance customer profitability.
Market Positioning
with over 120 company stores Brillux claims market leadership
among direct selling paint manufacturers in Germany. Its one stop
shop product range includes paints, lacquers, wood and concrete
preservatives, floor coatings and insulating systems as well as
floorcoverings, tools and decorating materials and equipment. The
Brillux brand is also sold in retail outlets and DIY superstores.
Though predominantly in Germany and neighbouring countries,
Brillux has subsidiaries in Benelux and Czech Republic, distributors
in several other countries and export operations in many more.
Commentary
In 1889 Hobrecker & Konig, forerunner of the present day Brillux,
offered its customers not only paint but also technical advice, support
and other services. That tradition lives on with the family-owned
company, once previously Brillux Konig and Flugger, which sets its
sights on being about 'more than just paint' with innovation in
products, attention to service

Business Development
Geographic expansion has traditionally been at the heart of Tikkurila's
development plans. Also, via its historical links with CPS Color
(formerly known as Tikkurila CPS Oy) which it divested in 2000, it
has been strong in utilising tinting systems for marketing paints and
coatings. Its most recent colour system, Tikkurila Symphony, was
launched in 2002. The Temaspeed Colour Service concept for
industrial coatings users comprises a network of 220 distributors in
more than 20 European countries.
Market Positioning
Tikkurila, which is responsible for Kemira's paints and coatings
business, is a significant regional player in Europe, with a leading
position in northern and eastern Europe. Its strongest growth is
expected to come from eastern Europe, where paint markets are
expanding to keep pace with rising standards of living.
Tikkurila produces and markets paints and coatings for private
consumers, professional painters and industrial users. In decorative
paints, it markets local brands such as Tikkurila in Finland and
Russia, Alcro and Beckers in Sweden, Vivacolor in the Baltic
countries and Polifarb Debica in Poland. In industrial coatings, the
Tikkurila Coatings brand is widely known especially in the Nordic
countries and the Baltic States.
Commentary
Tikkurila is owned by the 2.7bn [euro] Finnish-based chemicals group
Kemira Oyj. In accordance with the faster implementation scheme of
its strategy as launched by the new CEO Lasse Kurkilahti, Kemira has
quickened its pace of development in its current businesses and in an
active search for potential acquisitions. Kemira's goal is to strengthen
its four core businesses consisting of Pulp & Paper Chemicals,
Kemwater, Industrial Chemicals, and Paints Coatings.
Operationally, decorative paints within the Tikkurila Group are the
responsibility of Tikkurila Deco, and Tikkurila Coatings is
responsible for industrial coatings. Tikkurila Oy produces binders and
acts as the parent company.
Tikkurila, following the Alcro-Beckers acquisition in 2001 saw itself
as creating a strong, Nordic-based paint group as a counterweight to
the large multinational companies. Today it claims to be the biggest
paint producer in the Nordic countries and Baltic States, and aims at a
position among the top five in Europe. Tikkurila plans for its paints
and coatings operations to grow in the Baltic Rim area and in eastern
Europe, including the CIS countries, through strong local brands and
comprehensive service.

Business Development
Lafarge has become one of the principal players in the decorative
market in Europe, specially in Southern Europe, with a stream of
acquisitions over almost two decades, starting in France and moving
onto Italy and Spain, and now claims the number one position in Italy,
number three in France and number four in Spain. In Italy, despite its
leading position in DIY and Professional sectors, Lafarge is still
looking for more acquisitions in the least consolidated market in
Europe.
Market Positioning
Through its various companies and brands, Lafarge Peintures offers a
full range of paints to meet the needs of professionals in the building
sector and of the general public, including a captive decorators
merchant chain selling paints, floor and wall coverings and tooling.
Commentary
The recent history of Lafarge in paints began in 1986 with the
formation of Lafarge Nouveaux Materiaux, under which umbrella
structure Lafarge began to assemble a number of small and medium-
sized enterprises active in coatings, additives, paints etc. In 1998 the
company announced a merger with Sigma Coatings, then part of
Petrofina, only to see the plan foiled when Petrofina itself merged a
year later with Total. Lafarge's parent sold most of its Lafarge
Nouveaux Materiaux or its Specialty Products Division, which
included paints, in 2001 for 890m [euro] to the investment funds CVC
Capital Partners and Advent International but retained one third of the
capital of the newly created company, Materis, under the previous
management team. Materis was then sold on to venture capitalists
LBO France in 2003 for 1.1bn [euro]. Materis comprises five
divisions: Aluminates, Mortars, Admixtures, Refractories and Paints.
Its sales were 1.2bn [euro] in 2002, (930m [euro] in 1999) with over
5,000 employees and operations in more than 20 countries.
Lafarge's long-held ambition is to be among the top five paint
companies in Europe with a range of customer-focused brands by:
* launching new products and services
* making technological leaps
* meeting the quality challenge
* continuously improving the performance of its production units

Business Development
The company has been pursuing a Value Based Management
programme to improve financial and operational performance by
encouraging people to seek new, different and better ways of doing
things. Its short term objectives are focused on margin management,
value engineering and effective cost controls, and a number of growth
strategies.
Market Positioning
Barloworld is the market leader in decorative coatings in Southern
Africa with the Plascon brand and number two in Australia with the
Taubmans and Bristol brands. It also has joint ventures with world
technology leaders to supply automotive coatings in Southern Africa.
Commentary
Barloworld Coatings, until 2000 Plascon Piants, is a division of the
public company Barloworld Ltd, an international industrial brand
management business that represents many of the world's leading
brands, whose goal is to create value through leadership in the many
markets in which it operates. Levering its pre-eminence in the South
African market place, joint venture ties have long been a hallmark of
the company, some of which it has chosen to relinquish in recent
years due to coatings industry consolidation. However, it still retains
important links with world class companies like DuPont and Nippon.

As well as its own resources for business development in coatings and
facades, Relius can call on the Degussa Construction Chemicals
Competence Centre in Trostberg which coordinates eleven research
centers at locations all over the world and launches over 100 new
products each year.
Market Positioning
Relius is active in the field of energy conservation and with its
external insulation and finishing systems for architects and specifiers,
and in a wide range of industrial, protective and powder coatings,
with niches in wind energy, offshore structures and marine
applications.
Commentary
Relius is owned by the 11.4bn [euro] Degussa AG organisation
established in 2001 through the merger of Degussa-Huls AG and
SKW Trostberg AG. Degussa is organised into five divisions
comprising 21 business units. Relius is within the 1.72bn [euro]
Construction Chemicals Division and comes under the 605m [euro]
Construction Systems Europe (CSE) Business Unit.
Construction Systems Europe, headquartered in Trostberg Germany,
is divided into four Business Lines, the relevant one for Relius being:
* Coatings & Facades. It offers external insulation finishing systems,
building paints and industrial paints as well as plasters.
Other CSE Business Lines which are coatings-related are:
* Performance Flooring which provides comfort floors, sports
flooring systems and specialty waterproofing systems with brand
names like 'Ucrete, Conipur, Master-top and Artfloor'.
* Building Systems which supplies construction systems for new
building, repair and renovation, mainly mortars, through PCI
Augsburg GmbH. CSE, having completed a drive to cut costs and
raise efficiency, plans to concentrate on profitable growth, especially
in Central and Eastern Europe, notably Russia.

[edit] Forbes listing
Forbes Global magazine USA ranked Asian Paints among the 200 Best Small Companies in
the World for 2002 and 2003 and presented the 'Best under a Billion' award, to the company.
Asian Paints is the only paint company in the world to receive this recognition. One of the
country's leading business magazine "Business Today" in Feb 2001 ranked Asian Paints as
the Ninth Best Employer. It has been recognized by "Economic Times" as well.

[edit] History
The company has come a long way since its small beginnings in 1942. Four friends who were
willing to take on the world's biggest, most famous paint companies operating in India at that
time set it up as a partnership firm. Its started in Kapadwanj in the Kheda district in the state
of Gujarat as a collection of small plants. Over the course of 25 years Asian Paints has
became a corporate force and India's leading paints company. Driven by its strong consumer-
focus and innovative spirit, the company has been the market leader in paints since 1968.
Today it is double the size of any other paint company in India. Asian Paints manufactures a
wide range of paints for Decorative and Industrial use.

Vertical integration has seen it diversify into products such as Phthalic Anhydride and
Pentaerythritol, which are used in the paint manufacturing process. Asian Paints along with
PPG Inc, USA, one of the largest automotive coatings manufacturer in the world has begun a
50:50 joint venture, Asian PPG Industries to service the increasing requirements of the Indian
automotive coatings market. Another wholly owned subsidiary, Asian Paints Industrial
Coatings Limited has been set up to cater to the powder coatings market which is one of the
fastest growing segments in the industrial coatings market. This wholly owned subsidiary of
Asian Paints has entered into a tie-up with Canada-based Protech Chemicals which is one of
the top ten powder coatings companies in the world for technological know-how in the area
of powder coatings.

[edit] Sales
Most of its revenue from outside India come from the Middle East. [4]
