BBC Television puts HAT on...
This September saw HAT on BBC for our most extensive television
coverage ever. BBC East presenter David Whiteley became aware
of HAT through the news coverage of our Opening Event in May,
and came to meet the team and visit the premises in early summer.
He was so impressed by what he found that two days of filming
were organised for July and the final edited version became a
central part of the first programme in the new autumn series of
Inside Out, a half hour magazine programme that went out on BBC
East at 7.30pm on Wednesday, September 19 . The programme

included interviews with Barry Cox, HAT Chief Executive, Archie
Pitcher, HAT Treasurer and Deputy Chairman of the Board of
Governors, and Alfredo Marcantonio, Creative Consultant and
himself responsible for many famous ads of the past thirty years,
including Hamlet, Stella Artois and many others. Viewers glimpsed

Some exciting things have happened …
■ Since the summer newsletter, HAT has been busy in many areas and much is
going on that is exciting and ground breaking. We are preparing to support
Selfridge’s centennial celebration in 2009 and are spoilt for choice among the
wonderful historical artefacts that make up this immense collection. Over the next
year we will be in consultation with Selfridge’s staff to help to bring about a great
exhibition to celebrate 100 glorious years.
■ In the run up to Inside Out, BBC East
requested a selection of local print ads to
display on their website during the
trailing of the programme. We were
delighted to oblige with nine terrific local
ads featuring historical Garlands, Caleys
and Roys of Wroxham ads from long
ago. Here are two examples of those
screened.
■ Our new study facilities are already being put to good use. With the newly
opened Michael Cudlipp Research and Study Centre, shown here, we can
accommodate small groups of up to a dozen at a time, for meetings and
presentation or teaching purposes. On 7 June we hosted the Eastern Region
th
meeting of the Society of Archivists, and were happy to provide them with a
presentation about HAT and a short tour of our buildings before they got down to
business.
Thanking all those who have made gifts to HAT…..
