                                         Budget Proposal

The Prout School is a co-educational, private catholic high school in Wakefield, Rhode

Island. Currently, 57% of the student body participates in athletics (approximately 360 student

athletes). The Prout School has junior varsity and varsity teams competing in fall, winter and

spring sports. In the fall, the sports include volleyball, boys and girls soccer, tennis, and boys and

girls cross country. Winter sports include boys and girls swimming, boys and girls basketball,

and boys ice hockey. In the spring, sports include boys and girls track, co-ed golf, boys tennis,

boys and girls lacrosse, softball, and baseball. All these athletes are out there playing hard each

and every day, but they have no one to turn to if they are injured. There is no athletic training

room on campus, no athletic trainer available to them at all, and if there is an injury not all

coaches are equipped to handle the situation. We have proposed a facility design to turn the

old pottery room into an athletic training room. We were given a budget of $5000 per year to

spend on supplies and equipment for the athletic training facility. This $5000 includes

expendible supplies for taping and first aid, non-expendable supplies such as rehabilitation

equipment and general athletic training room equipment, and lastly capitol items. A portion of

money was reserved from each year’s budget to account for unforeseen circumstances/

expenses. Since this budget is for the first two years of operation, it is expected that obstacles

and challenges will arise. We feel that the supplies ordered will ensure a safe and optimal

healthcare facility for our athletes. Future fundraising efforts by the booster club/athletic teams

would only enhance the care able to be provided by the athletic training staff and facility.

Pro-Trainer Scissors: These scissors are cost-effective tool sturdy enough for cutting tape, foam,
and other heavy duty materials.
Shark Tape Cutter: These will allow athletes to quickly and safely remove an ankle tape job.
Bandage Scissors: These scissors are less expensive and would allow more than one person to
be using scissors at once.
Suture Removal Kit: This kit includes forceps and small scissors that would be useful for first aid
care.
Faceguard Removal Tool: This is an essential tool for handling emergency situations with our ice
hockey and boys lacrosse teams.
Flexi-wrap handle: This will be used with the flexi-wrap to easily wrap ice on an athlete.
Large Plastic Bucket: This could be filled with ice water to be used as a cold whirlpool. This will
be useful for lower extremity injuries, especially with the cross-country team.
5-Gallon Plastic Bucket: This bucket could be used for a warm soak or a soak with betadine. This
could be useful for lower extremity injuries, specifically ingrown toenails.
Penlights: These will be used in concussion evaluation as well as with eye injuries.
Sam Splint: The universal shape provides a versatile and reusable splinting tool for possible
fractures or other serious injuries.
Arm Slings: These slings are cost-effective and reusable and important for the immobilization of
upper-extremity injuries.
Aluminum Crutches: These will be used on loan by the athletic training staff to avoid weight-
bearing of lower-extremity injuries.
Knee Immobilizer: This would provide the necessary immobilization for a serious knee injury.
Acewraps: The various sizes could be used for compression, immobilization, wraps (spicas), or
holding ice on for a treatment in the athletic training room.

Our goal for the first year was to purchase the basic rehabilitation supplies for our athletes.

Theraband: These are extremely versatile rehabilitation tools that can be used for both upper
and lower extremity exercises. We will start with yellow and blue which will provide a lighter
and a heavier resistance option.
Dumbells: These dumbbells will be useful for the rehabilitation of upper extremity injuries. The
stand will allow for easy organization and storage.
Stability ball: This stability ball will be able to be used for core strengthening which is an
important basis for the rehabilitation of many different types of injuries.
Jump Rope: This could be used as an inexpensive form of cardio equipment or for agility work
for lower extremity injury rehabilitation.
Resistance Tubing: Tubing provides more options for resistance exercises. These tubes are
adjustable to allow for different levels of resistance.
Foam Roller: This foam roller can be used to warm up and stretch out muscles/fascia or as a
challenge to stability during rehabilitation exercises.

Ice Bags: Ice will be the most common treatment we provide for athletes.
Flexi-wrap: This will be used to wrap ice on the athletes.
Non-Adherant Pads: These pads can be used in the covering of wounds and abrasions to
prevent infection.
Gauze Sponges: This loose gauze can be used in the cleaning of wounds or as an extra layer of
compression underneath tape or a bandage. This bulk purchase will allow enough for the first
and second years.
Cotton-Tipped Applicators: These can be used to safely and cleanly apply ointments to wounds
or abrasions. This bulk purchase will provide enough for the first and second years.
Bandaids: The different shaped bandaids will allow for the covering of open wounds on a
variety of different shaped body parts.
Steri-Strips: These can be used as an alternative to stitches or until an athlete is able to see a
physician to decide if they require stitches. This purchase will allow enough for the first and
second years.
Triple Antibiotic Ointment: This ointment will prevent infection in open wounds.
2nd Skin Barrier Square: These will be used to increase the comfort of athletes with blisters. 200
should be adequate for the first year.
Synthetic Exam Gloves: These gloves will be used in order to follow universal precautions.
Antiseptic Towelettes: These can be used to wipe clean an area before covering an open
wound. They can also be used if an athlete has gotten blood/body fluid on another part of their
body during the treatment.
Betadine: This solution will help reduce bacteria and pathogens to prevent infection. It can be
used in wound care or in the cleaning of water bottles, coolers, and containers.
Saline Solution: This can be used to sooth irritated eyes of athletes. It is also becoming
common for athletes to wear contacts during athletics and this can help if they need to adjust
their contacts.

Skin Lube: This skin lube can be used to decrease friction within a heel and lace pad. Only a
small amount is used on each heel and lace pad so this tub should last for the first and second
years. This product can also be used to create a good amount of friction for massage and cross-
friction massage treatments.
Heel and Lace Pads: These will be used with each ankle tape and some knee and elbow tapes as
well. These will prevent athletes from getting irritated/blisters from the tape. A box of 2000
will create 1000 heel and lace pads, which should be enough for the first and second years.
Underwrap: This will be used underneath most tape jobs to prevent irritation from the tape. A
roll of pre-wrap goes a long way, two boxes should provide plenty for the first year and most
likely get through the second year as well.
1 ½ “ Athletic Tape: This is the most commonly used type of tape in the athletic training room.
We feel that basketball, soccer, and lacrosse will use the highest amounts of tape amongst our
athletes. This is the largest portion of our taping/wrapping budget because of the high demand
of this tape.
Sher Light: This self-adhesive stretchy tape is versatile and can be used for tape jobs that need a
bit more give. It can also be used to hold on foam padding or bandaids without restricting the
athletes range of motion greatly. This tape is slightly more expensive and will not be used as
often as the 1 ½” white tape.
Tuf-Skin: This will make the skin sticky so that the tape will be more effective. 10 cans should
get through the year for the small amount that you use on each taping treatment.
Foam Rubber: This foam can be used to create padding to cover contusions and donuts to cover
blisters.

For the first year, we felt it was most important to equip the training room with the necessary
tables, as well as a hydrocollator to be able to provide some treatments for the athletes. Since
there is already an ice machine available we will be able to provide heat and ice, which are
versatile and common treatments.

Hydrocollator: Heatpacks are a common pre-practice treatment for athletes with muscle and
tendon injuries. This hydrocollator comes with a variety of shaped packs that will allow us to
treat various athletes. Heat is an effective treatment for our training room because you are able
to treat many athletes at once without direct supervision.
Treatment Tables: These treatment tables will be used by athletes during treatments and
possibly certain rehabilitation exercises. They have shelves that will also allow for extra storage.
Taping Tables: These taping tables have shelving built in that will allow for easy access and
storage of the taping supplies.
