Journal Entry 6 Chapter 10 was very informative regarding essential topics such as recruitment, tenure, dismissal and the tenure process. Administrators must be knowledgeable of these topics and act according to policy. I learned from this chapter the importance of the recruitment process and what types of questions should be asked in an interview and which questions to avoid. Administrators must be aware of hiring discrimination and avoid asking inappropriate questions that might be regarded as discriminating. Tenure is also an important issue that administrators must be knowledgeable of. Tenure is designed to provide security for teachers and protect them from arbitrary treatment from school officials. A teacher with tenure can be dismissed only for cause. Administrators must be aware of the reasons for dismissal. Dismissal can be due to incompetency, insubordination, neglect of duty, criminal activity and immortality. Deciding dismissal is a serious matter and should be documented and analyzed completely before action is taken. To be effective and successful, an administrator must research and be knowledgeable of these issues. Based on my experience as an educator, I can apply content from this reading to my classroom and teaching by being knowledgeable of these important issues. This is my third year teaching and I will not be tenured until the end of my fourth year. I am now aware of the Non-Tenure stipulations such as no expectation for employment beyond contracted year and no right to reasons for non-renewal. I do not think many non-tenured teachers are aware of this. I can apply this chapter to my teaching by planning for a lesson on discrimination. It is important that students understand what discrimination is and how important it is to respect everyone. The reading provided great insight into this week’s topic regarding tenure, dismissal and due process. The reading went into great detail about the tenure process and why teachers are provided with tenure. The reading also discussed the causes for dismissal in great depth such as incompetence and neglect of duty. It also allowed me to understand how important it is for administrators to document and evaluate teachers even if it is just a quick walk through the classroom. The reading also went into depth about the importance of due process. Class discussion has influenced my thinking on these topics by making me aware of how important these issues are and how essential it is to be knowledgeable of the laws regarding them. Discussion question 1 made me think about what type of evaluations are the most effective and how an administrator effectively evaluates a large number of teachers. Discussion question 2 allowed me to think about how to problem solve when a staff member is having difficulties with discipline and control and what steps need to be taken if interventions aren’t working. Overall, this week was an excellent learning process. Administrators must be knowledgeable of these issues and be able to problem solve daily.
