Pros included when using a summative evaluation include quick and less time consuming than formative and holds program accountable. Cons include absence of concern with teaching and learning, is not an ongoing process for professional development, and questionable validity. Formative Evaluation- Supervisory function which focuses on professional development and the improvement of teaching by assisting teachers in areas of need. Pros included with this type of evaluation include the focus on effective instruction, often builds trust and rapport, and is not concerned with legal issues. Cons involve inconsistent results due to various evaluators and often surprise visits which create anxiety.
