When I told Al Noraker, president of Wright & McGill, that I was planning to
fish Antero Reservoir on opening day he said he had the perfect rod for me to try
out. A few days later I received a brand new 6 wt., 9’ Boron 5Xe on my doorstep
and an email from Al asking me to give it a test run.
Just opening the box was a treat. The rod came in a beautifully crafted graph-

nicest I’d seen. And the rod was even more impressive. It was far lighter than I
expected from a 6 wt. rod, with an extraordinary look and feel. A truly fine piece
of workmanship, from butt to tip. I couldn’t wait to get it on the Reservoir!
Opening day at Antero was the true test, and the Boron 5Xe passed with flying
colors! It felt and cast like a dream. Even with my awkward casting style the rod performed beautifully, allowing for exceptional
distance and control. And the stiff afternoon winds did little to slow it down. I was genuinely thrilled with the performance. Nor-

Yellowstone Fly Rods: From Jackson Cardinal
I’ve noted before that there are more quality rods on the market today in the mid-
priced range than at any other time. As rod technology continues to grow and develop
within the high-end market, the lower-end rod makers seem to benefit the most. They’re
able to integrate the newer ideas and materials into their rods at a fraction of the cost. And it’s the consumer who truly wins in this
deal. Better rod-making technology means more competition, and more competition means better rods at a cheaper price.
Yellowstone Fly Rods are a prime example. They’re producing rods for under $180 that look and feel like rods you’d find for
