Tutorial: Finding Resources with Delicious & Zotero We have used two services, Delicious (http://delicious.com/) and Zotero (http://www.zotero.org/), to compile and share a number of useful references. We chose to use these services because they allow for a range of search and management actions. References listed in Zotero are primarily from journal articles or books, while links compiled in Delicious include a wider range of subjects. Each service organizes their resources in collections. We have a collection of Zotero resources and Delicious resources under the name of “lmas,” our lab. Delicious Looking at our collection Finding our collection is easy. One can either (1) click on one of the links from our webpage or (2) go to the Delicious webpage (http://delicious.com) and type in “lmas” as the user whose collection of bookmarks you desire to see. 1. 2. Browsing our collection Our collection of Delicious resources is organized with “tags.” Tags are words one uses to categorize items and the service Delicious organizes web resources solely with tags. For example, if I had a picture of my pet dog that I put up on the internet and wanted to categorize I may use the tags: “picture” “dog” “Barney” “beach” “summer_vacation_09” …all words or phrases that related to that picture. Although this is the LMAS collection, as part of the packaging project we attached the tag “packaging” to the resources most applicable to this project. Additionally, each resource may have a number of other tags associated with it, such as “policy” or other tags relating to the resource’s author, type or subject area. By clicking certain tags I am able to filter my search results to a finer and finer level of recall. Adding to this collection We chose to use Delicious to compile our resources because it allows others to add to this list. You can add to this collection of resources in a few ways. You can, of course, email us and ask us to add some resources, but you can also add resources by creating your own delicious account and using the same tags that we use. Using the same tags we use will allow others to find both your resources and our resources when they search for those tags on delicious. As you can see in the following screenshot, one can also filter one’s search results by more tags, so the more tags you use, the more easily people will be able to find your resource. Zotero Looking at our collection Finding our collection is easy. One can either (1) click on the link from our webpage or (2) go to the Zotero webpage (http://zotero.org) and search for the “lmas” group. 1. 2. Browsing our collection Zotero resources are organized in folders, much like folders in your filing cabinet. In addition to exploring those folders, you can simply browse our total group library. However, don’t be surprised if you find information on all sorts of industrial ecology and manufacturing issues – even those not related to packaging. You can also click each resource to find out more information.
