Facebook 101: For Business
What will you learn today?
• What Facebook is and why you should be interested in Facebook for your business?
• How to get started!
Today you will walk away with a newly created Facebook “business” page and a plan for promoting your
business with Facebook.
Why should you have a presence on Facebook?
• Now more than 500 million active users
• 50% of active users log on to Facebook in any given day
• Average user has 130 friends
• People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook
• Average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events
• Mobile device users are the most active users on Facebook
Features and benefits of using Facebook or other Social Media sites
• Relatively free platform that connects you to potential prospects and to your current customers.
To get started you will just need to invest some of your time.
• Allows you the freedom to create your own content and create consistency between your other
marketing channels, i.e. print, web site, blog, in store promotions, etc.
• Easy to set up and use so you are able to get started right away.
• Easy to recover from making mistakes.
Thoughts on Target Market
Facebook is available to anyone and everyone. You will get “fans” that are not potential customers
however they can refer you to your potential customers. This would be similar to going to a networking
event and being introduced to a potential customer from one of your business friends. Facebook can
help you reinforce your brand, keep it top of mind for potential customers, current customers and those
that may refer customers to you. It helps bring out your personality and strengthen your name
recognition.

TIPS
• The WALL:
o Options/settings: your wall can show updates from you & your fans, just you or just your
fans (others). We suggest if you want to create an open dialogue where everyone
(customers, prospects & just fans) can see all of the interactions, you should leave it
open to both.
• Your STATUS UPDATE:
o In order to create a status update that can be shared by your fans on their walls, you
need to include a link to a web site, video, photo/logo or an event. This makes the status
“sharable” or viral. Without one of these it’s just a status update that cannot be shared.
o If you want to share pictures that one of your personal friends posted on their site, you
will need to go to their album and copy their link then post it on your page.
• Your BUSINESS PAGE:
o If you want to share things between your personal page/friends and your business
page/fans always post them on your BUSINESS page FIRST. Then you are able to
share/post to your personal profile. If you do it the other way around, post on your
personal page first, you will not easily be able to post it on your business page.
o Once you get to 100 fans you are able to request a personalized, vanity username/URL.
Example: facebook.com/EverythingWaldo
o One great way to support other businesses is to tag them in your status. This reference
will show up on their wall, your status and in your fans’ news feeds and on their page.
o You can use Facebook as your business page. This way you can add a comment to
someone else’s page speaking from your business.
o Always set up events on your business page and it will automatically invite your fans.
o Notes are a good application to use for longer posts, i.e. if you are having a sale.
o Link back to your blog or web site as much as possible.
o Add the Facebook logo with a link back to your Facebook business page on your web
site or blog.
o Add your web site link to Facebook.
