Our eyes begin to deteriorate as we age.
Luckily enough, there is such a thing as
vision therapy. Vision therapy is an
                     individualized, supervised, treatment
                     program designed to correct visual-motor
                     and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies. It
originated with the work of William Bates, an
opthalmologist who is practicing in New York
City. Bates developed the Bates method eye
exercises to help improve vision without
glasses.

Dr. Bates believed that vision problems were the result of stress
that caused the muscles around the eye to become tense, and so
he developed special exercises to relax and strengthen the eye
muscles. These exercises are natural ways to improve eyesight.

One exercise is called palming. Here, you should cover your eyes
so as to exclude all light. The eyes will consequently be able to
achieve a greater degree of relaxation. Then, cover both eyes
with the palms of your hands, with your fingers crossed on your
forehead. The secret to success is to relax while palming.
Remember that the blacker the field you see, the more relaxed
you are. You can also try sunning. Get out into the open and let
the sun shine onto your lids as you sway back and forth. Just
make sure that you do palming after sunning.

Another thing you can do is to practice with a test card. Keep an
eye chart on the wall, and practice reading the smallest line that
you can without straining, standing ten to twenty feet away from
the chart. You can also try looking at one of the letters on that
line, close your eyes, remember that letter, and go over every
detail in your mind. Open your eyes and notice that you are able
to see that letter and the one below it better. Shift to another
letter on the same line, and perform the exercise for five minutes
every day.

While it is now over a hundred years since Dr. William Bates first
began developing and refining his theories of the causes of poor
sight, the Bates method eye exercises still remain in the spotlight
as one of the best natural ways to restore and improve one’s
vision.
