                    Youth Sugar Sweetened Beverage
                            Art Contest

As the future generation and those that can be a voice to advocate for healthier communities and healthier lifestyles, we
want our youth to be an integral part of the Diabetes Summit. Youth have ideas that can spark the interest of all and
motivate change in the community. Our youth, especially the 12-17 year olds, consume sugar sweetened beverages at
an alarming rate mostly because of the buy-in to the marketing hype and look of these drinks.

We invite your students to be part of our county-wide Sugar Sweetened Beverage Campaign by participating in our Art
Contest for the San Joaquin County Diabetes Summit on February 26, 2010. One way to empower students and their
peers is to allow them to discover they can Rethink their Drink through education and encourage them to develop
messages that will resonate with their peers. Our goal is to have San Joaquin County youth create innovative, youth-
friendly posters, water bottle labels, and video PSA’s to spread the word throughout our county.

The Diabetes Summit Sugar Sweetened Beverage Art Contest has been created for youth, ages 12-17. This competition
will have students really thinking about what it means to Rethink Your Drink and what they should be drinking to stay
healthy and active. There are three categories for students to choose from in the Sugar Sweetened Beverage Art
Contest: Poster, Water Bottle label design, or Video PSA. Goals of the project are for the students to (1) focus on how to
choose wisely when it comes to what to drink (2) demonstrate an understanding of sugar sweetened beverages link to
obesity and unhealthy lifestyles and, (3) showcase their work at the Diabetes Summit as the culminating event, sharing
their knowledge and the steps they have taken to Rethink their Drink.
