Compli adds new social media policies and guidelines to help management tame new media

May 31, 2011 04:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time

PORTLAND, Ore.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Compli®, the nation's trusted provider of HR and
compliance management software, today announced the addition of social media policies to the Compli platform.
The content, provided by Fisher and Phillips, LLP and Wallace Welch & Willingham, includes policy
recommendations for the use of social media in the workplace including: blogging, social networking, online public
communications and progressive social media.

Social media has quickly evolved as a major form of communication, however rules, regulations, etiquette and best
practices, have not kept up. According to a study conducted by Forrester Research, “more than half of all adult
Internet users in the United States either visit or maintain a profile on at least one social networking site.”(Source:
PCWorld.com) As a result, social media is currently unchartered territory for many businesses and guidelines,
policies and best practices have yet to be established around its use in the workplace.

“Social media is unique in many ways, but one of the most fundamental differences is it developed through a change
in society, not a ruling in court or the legislature. Many of our clients know they need to have policies and programs
in place but don’t know where to start,” said Chris Hoffman, Partner at Fisher and Phillips, LLP. “From an
employer’s standpoint, it’s important to control the information that’s coming out of the business, whether that takes
the form of forums, chat rooms, blogs or text messages. It is imperative for management to have policies and
procedures in place that spell out how employees are expected to conduct themselves within social media when
working on behalf of the company,” concluded Hoffman.

The growing number of social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter and blogs further blur the line between
personal and business communication. At last count Twitter had over 200 million accounts and Facebook over 500
million members. With both networks projected to grow at double-figure rates this year, their use in the workplace is
an issue that needs to be addressed.

“Social media is currently a new landscape, so we’re filling in the gaps for our customers with policy
recommendations and best practice recommendations,” said Lon Leneve, President and CEO of Compli. “Our new
content helps clients analyze their needs, adopt and implement written policies and educate their employees on what
is expected when using social media tools and channels,” noted Lon Leneve.

Compli recently held a webinar titled “Social Media in the Workplace-Are You Protected” to discuss the wide
variety of issues that arise when using social media and to outline best practices organizations can follow to protect
themselves. The new social media policies are available to all Compli customers on the Compli platform. For more
