Lucia de Paoli,Michelangiola Russo,Laura Savaresi
A very special river in northern Italy and a very special town.
The very special river is river Mincio.

             Mincio is a beautiful river
             with clear water.

Mantua is very special because there are three lakes around it, so
Mantua looks like a town on the water.
When it springs from Monte Adamello its name is Sarca.

                             then
the river Sarca flows into Lake Garda.
It flows into Lake Garda near
                              Torbole

When it flows out of Lake
Garda in Peschiera it has a
different name: Mincio.

    What is…
an ECOSYSTEM?
             DEFINITION
• An ecosystem is a dynamic set of living
  organisms (plants, animals and
  microorganisms) all interacting among
themselves and with the environment in which
they live (soil, climate, water and light).
• An ecosystem does not have precise limits -
it can be as small as a pond or a dead tree,
or as large as the Earth itself.
The picture shows the function of each
  living organism in the environment
A Task for you: painting acvtivity
4. Observe the landscape and the colours of what you can
   see:vegetation, water and animals.
Then in class draw/paint a picture.

Decomposers They eat vegetables

Secondary consumers They decompose vegetable and animal
                                remains

Abiotic substances They use sunlight to make food

ZOPPY ON THE STAGE

Silvia : Hello everybody, this is the story of our friend Zoppi, the coypus.
Zoppi: Hello! I’m Zoppi the coypus. I come from Brazil, in South America. Now I live in Italy. I like staying among
the cane fields in Mantua Lakes.
Silvia: It’s a beautiful Sunday in July and the sun is shining, Zoppi decides to go out for a bath
Zoppi: Oh! Beautiful these water lilies! And how nice is swimming in this water!
Silvia: Zoppi meets his friend Giacomina, the carp
Zoppi: Hi Giacomina! How are you?
Giacomina: Hi Zoppi! I’m fine, thank you! And you?
Zoppi: Fine thank you!
Giacomina: Where are you going?
Zoppi: I’m going out for a bath….it’s very hot today!
Giacomina: You are right Zoppi!
Zoppi: Tell me Giacomina, what are those strange plants floating on the water?
Giacomina: They’re chestnuts Zoppi, they’re good to eat!
Zoppi: Really? That’s very interesting, I like eating water plants! Thanks Giacomina….see you soon!
Silvia: Zoppi meets his friend Gulliver, the gull
Gulliver: Hello Zoppi! How are you?
Zoppi: Hello Gulliver! I’m fine, thank you and you?
Gulliver: Fine, thanks. …Listen, would you like to come to a party on the floating green island tomorrow afternoon?
Zoppi: Oh, sure, thank you! Who will be there?
Gulliver: All our friends! Marta, Giuseppina, the wild duck’s family, the kingfisher and all the other birds ….
Zoppi: Oh beautiful!
Gulliver: ……and there will be also the birds of Fontana Wood and the baby black swan.
But pay attention to Circus, the duck – hawk, he lives near the floating green island and he is very
             dangerous for us!
Zoppi: I understand …… let’s write a letter to everyone to inform them about Circus. What do you think about?
Gulliver: Ok, it is a good idea! Let’s write it now…
Silvia: Gulliver and Zoppi write the letter and then send it to their friends
Gulliver: Ok Zoppi, thank you for your help and see you tomorrow!
Zoppi: Thank you Gulliver, bye bye!
                    WHO’S ZOPPI?
Zoppi is a coypus. A coypus is a big rodent, it looks like a rat with small ears and
small black eyes, big orange incisor teeth and a long rounded scarsely-haired tail.
The legs are short and rear feet are webbed, because Zoppi likes swimming. Its
fur is very nice: reddish brown in the upper part, dark gray in the under part and
white on the chin.
                      WHERE DOES ZOPPI COME FROM?
Zoppi isn’t Italian. It is from South America, where it lives in marshes and lake s
with a lot of succulent vegetation along the banks. Zoppi loves aquatic vegetation.
                           WHY IS ZOPPI IN MANTUA?
About 20 years ago many coypuses were imported to Italy for their very nice fur.
When some coypuses escaped from fur farms, they discovered a perfect habitat for
them: Mantua Lakes, with water for swimming and aquatic vegetation for eating.

ANOTHER STRANGER: THE LOTUS FLOWER

Where do they come from? And how did they arrive here?
In 1921 a scientist from Parma, Anna Maria Pellegreffi, returned to
Italy from the south east of Asia with some lotus flowers.
Mantua Lakes were a perfect habitat for these flowers and they
grew in a big quantity.
Like Zoppi even the introduction of lotus flowers represented a
problem for the ecosystem. The enormous quantity of lotus flowers
destroyed or modified other plants that were typical of Mantua
Lakes.
