In its effort to promote the Spanish Language and Culture the Consulate General of Spain in
Hong Kong and the Spanish Section of The Chinese University of Hong Kong have established
a yearly prize name “Consulate General of Spain Prize for the Promotion of Spanish Culture”.
Details of the regulations are as follows:

 “The best students of Spanish in the Chinese University of Hong Kong”

1   The purpose of the award is to promote the learning of Spanish and the cross-cultural
    exchange among the student population in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A
    donation of 15,500USD has been done by the Consulate General of Spain in Hong Kong to
    be awarded to “The best students of Spanish language in CUHK”.
2   There shall be 1 to 3 cash awards that should be destined to help cover air-fare and tuition
    fees in the intensive 4-week long Summer Study Programme organized by the Department
    of Linguistics and Modern Languages of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
               1st price:      10,000 HKD
               2nd price:      5,500 HKD
3   Eligibility: CUHK full time undergraduate students
     3.1    who are (or were) taking any Spanish course offered by the Department of
           Linguistics and Modern Languages of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in the
           current academic year, and
     3.2   who enroll in the “Summer Study Programme in Spain 2009” organized by the
           Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages of CUHK in the Summer of 2009.
     3.3   Final year students are also eligible as long as they participate in the Summer Study
           Programme in Spain in July 2009.
4   Selection criteria: The criteria for selection of the finalists (shortlisting) will be first based
    on the students’ performance at all SPA courses taken in CUHK (shown in your
    transcript), Overall GPA is not to be considered, but the amount of Spanish courses taken
    and the grade you obtained: Say that you have taken the following courses.
                EXAMPLE of grade conversion
                   SPA1110 A- --- 3.7 converted points
                   SPA1210 B+ --- 3.3
                   SPA2110 A --- 4
                   SPA1150 B --- 3 (grades available at the end of May)
                   Total: 14 points

     4.1   Once the grades are released at the second term, the Spanish teaching staff at LIN
           CUHK will nominate the best 10 applicants for the final phase, who will be notified
           via student-email.
     4.2   Shortlisted candidates shall be asked to participate in the interviewing sessions (to be
           conducted mainly in Spanish) where final decision will be made not exclusively on
           the basis of academic merit but on a broader cultural awareness and sensitivity, on
           their motivation and their interest in continuing learning the language together. In
           case two (or more) candidates obtain the same number of points the interview panel
           will have the final say.
     4.3   SPA1310 “Summer Intensive Spanish Beginners” and “SPA2310 Summer Intensive
           Spanish Intermediate” are both 6 credits. The calculation for grade conversion will
           be double. E.g. B = 3 x 2= 6 points.
     4.4   Notice that if you have taken Spanish courses abroad, you should provide the
           academic transcript of the transferred credits so that the points can be counted.
           Maximum of 1point per credit will be given in that case.
5   Final decision: The final decision on the winners will be made by a panel of external
    evaluators, from the General Consulate of Spain in Hong Kong and/or other invited
    Spanish institutions and/or companies after an interview with the nominees in Spanish.
6   Conditions: Apart from taking part in the Summer Programmes in Spain organized by
    LIN and presenting proof of it (air-ticket and academic report of the language center in
    Spain), the students selected will comply with the requirement to promote Spanish
    languages or culture by writing a short report about their experience in Spain (in English,
    Chinese or Spanish), before the 1st of September of the next academic year. Any form of
    audio-visual and graphic materials are welcome.
     6.1   They will be also asked to participate (at least once) in the promotion sessions of the
           Summer Study Programmes and/or promotional events by the Spanish Society of
           CUHK in next editions, to stimulate the interest of their fellow students.
     6.2   If a student withdraws from any of the conditions of the award, s/he consequently
           forfeits the prize and must inform the Programme Coordinator as soon as possible to
           call next person in the waiting list.
7   The donor and the recipients of the award may be invited to attend an Award Presentation
    Ceremony organized by the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages.
8   Detailed information about our Summer Programmes in Spain 2008 will be posted in our
    website soon and students will be informed accordingly via Moodle. A briefing session
    will be organized in March (date not yet confirmed).
9   Application period for the prize from March 27 to May 16. Further information and
    application form can be downloaded from http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/lin/ml/spanish/ and
    from our Moodle platform.
10 We reserve the right to review and update these conditions in order to better adapt to the
   real final situation of the SPA section and the applicants making the pertinent
   announcement in SPA Moodle courses, always respecting the general terms signed
   between the Consulate General of Spain and the Department of Linguistics and Modern
   Languages.
