The US Department of Health and Human Services recently announced a National Quality Strategy to promote healthcare quality through better care, healthy people and affordable care. To find out what goes into the government's "quality" assessment, the author went to the Web site at www.healthcare.gov. Under the "Compare Care Quality" tab are links to examine hospitals, nursing homes, home health and dialysis facilities. The hospital comparison uses the HHS Medicare data tool, which reports 44 quality-of-care measures routinely collected on US hospitals, including some Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers. If people ever move to consumer-driven healthcare choices, these kinds of measures could help compare quality between facilities.
