QLD MASTERS ---- MEMBER ALERT
QMA is hosting the Australian Masters championships next Easter, 21 – 24 April.
This is a very busy program, especially on multi-events days, and when events are held on both tracks/fields
simultaneously. This will require a much larger team of officials than we usually have to run our club meets. So a
special request is being made to every QMA member to assist in this task.
If you could help to officiate with at least ONE EVENT PER DAY of competition, this will help to cover every event
of this carnival. All you have to do is check your competition times then help out when you are free.
If possible, let Harry Giles (3353 3930 jhgiles@hotmail.com) know in advance when you can help. During the
competition days you can go to the official‟s sign-on table in the official‟s room (ground floor of Main Stadium) and
offer your help. From there you will be directed to an event. Field events need recorders, implement retrievers,
tape spikers and measurers, pit rakers etc. The track needs wind gauge operators, back-up time keepers, relay
change umpires, break-line bottle umpire, hurdle movers (especially steeple-chase) plus lots more. Without help
from everyone, it will be very difficult to run this big event.

To our members
At a Special General Meeting held on Saturday 26th February 2011 the QMA membership voted to adopt
the Revised Constitution and By-Laws as presented. This Special General Meeting and presentation was in
accordance with a motion moved at the June 2010 AGM and marks a progressive move towards regional
administration of competitions, finance and membership allowing the QMA committee to concentrate on
policy and state issues.

HEALTH & FITNESS TIPS FROM : Chris & Dawn
Chris is a WA Masters athlete, and is current Australian M35 400m and 400m
hurdles champion. He practices as a physiotherapist out of the Challenge Stadium
    Tendinopathy in Masters Athletes
„Tendinopathy‟ is an overuse or degenerative injury of the tendon that is common in mature athletes. A number
of predisposing factors relevant to Masters athletes exist, such as the number of years of running (collagen
changes occur as we age), a change of footwear (or poor/aging footwear), increase in training load, (speed,
distance, etc), decreasing recovery time, or poor strength or flexibility (can be related to calf or foot injuries).
Common sites for tendinopathy include the Achilles tendon (often runners), the patellar tendon (e.g. jumpers) or
rotator cuff tendons (throwers). Signs and symptoms of tendinopathy are that the tendon is painful when cold, but
pain may diminish when warmed up (and can often run pain-free), but gets painful once activity has finished, and is
often tight and sore the next morning. There may also be a thickening of the tendon.
    Self-management for tendinopathic injuries include
Applying ice after training (for 20 minutes)
Load management, including reducing distance, speed, number of sessions per week, while
maintaining fitness by „cross-training‟ (e.g. spending time in the pool or on a cycle instead of on the track)
A regime of strengthening and/or stretching may be required, as well as hands-on or manual therapy such as
dry needling (acupuncture) and massage. Tendinopathies can be difficult conditions to fully recover from, and your
physiotherapist can help with managing your condition and can co-ordinate with other health professionals such as
podiatrists or sports physicians if required, to facilitate your prompt return to sport.

                          Some healthy tips from Dawn

    Health and Wellness Tips:
Vegetables and Fruits: Vitamin, antioxidant and fiber powerhouses
Fruits and vegetables are low in calories and are packed with vitamins, minerals, protective plant compounds
and fiber. They are a great source of nutrients and vital for a healthy diet.
Fruits and vegetables should be part of every meal, and be your first choice for a snack. Eat a minimum of five
portions each day. The antioxidants and other nutrients in these foods help protect against developing certain
types of cancer and other diseases.
Greens: Dark leafy green vegetables are a vital part of a healthy diet since they are packed with nutrients such
as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, and Vitamins A, C, E and K. Greens help to strengthen the blood and
respiratory systems. They are currently the most lacking food in the American diet. Be adventurous in your choice
of greens: kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Chinese cabbage are just a few of the many options.
Sweet Vegetables: Naturally sweet vegetables are an excellent way to add healthy sweetness to your meals
and reduce your cravings for other sweets. Some examples of sweet vegetables are corn, carrots, beets, sweet
potatoes or yams, winter squash, and onions.
Fruit: Eating a wide variety of fruit is another very healthy part of any diet. They provide us with beneficial
properties such as natural sugars, fiber, Vitamins and antioxidants. Choose fresh or frozen, and focus on variety.
Berries are cancer-fighting, apples provide fiber, oranges and mangos offer vitamin C, and so on.
Go for the brights: The brighter, deeper colored fruits and vegetables contain higher concentrations of
vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Avoid: Fruit juices can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar per cup; avoid or dilute with water. Canned fruit
often contains sugary syrup, and dried fruit, while an excellent source of fiber, can be high in calories. Avoid fried
veggies or ones smothered in dressings or sauces – you may still get the vitamins, but you’ll be getting a lot of
unhealthy fat and extra calories as well.

Records, Rankings, Races and Relays

I think we all understand the concept of RECORDS – the person who does it fastest, highest or furthest in an event
holds the record. In our sport, there are a whole series of records – State, National, Oceania, World; and then
records for particular competitions, for example – PanPac Masters Games. A record is only good until someone
else comes along and once again does it faster, higher or further.
Very specific conditions apply for records to be recognized. For example, ‘The record shall be made in
bona fide competition …’ (IAAF Rule 260.1)
The AMA Handbook for 2010-11 has information on how to apply to have a record recognized (p48) and an
exhaustive list of Australian and World records (pp54 – 68).

What about RANKINGS? If you go to www.mastersathletics.net you will find world ranking listings for men and
women for all the track and field events included in Masters competition. These are compiled substantially from
the results from all the National, Regional and World Championships, and other competitions such as PanPacs and
World Masters Games held in a given calendar year.
Now it could be that the current World record holder for a particular event has moved up an age group, retired
from running or just hasn’t competed during the year. Then who-ever runs the fastest time for that event during
the year gains the Number 1 ranking. Other athletes who have competed in that event during the year are listed
in order of their best performances, down to a pre-determined cut-off time.
I have not been able to get precise details about this cut-off limit but it seems to be at around the 80% age graded
performance mark,
When the list for 2010 was posted in December, I was excited to find so many of our Queensland women in the
listings. Is it something in the water? Or maybe the sunshine? But then we seem to be a particularly competitive
bunch which has made for some great RACES (and jumps and throws competitions).
And if we put together several runners with world rankings, as the W65 ladies have done this season, we end up
with a great RELAY team. This team, with some minor changes of team members, now hold the Australian records
for the 4 x 400m, 4 x 800m and 4 x 1500m relays.
So to sum up: a few of us are good enough to set or break RECORDS, a few more of us manage to get our names
up there in the RANKINGS, and if we can get the right people together in the same place at the right time – WOW!
Watch those RELAY records tumble.
Supplied by Irene Davey
Congratulations ladies on making
the lists for your various events.

JULIE BRIMS smashes 20 year old sprint record.
At a QA open meet held on Saturday 12th February in Brisbane, Julie Brims ran the sizzling time of 25.300 secs to
set a new Australian record for the W45 200 metres. That the existing record of 25.63 secs held by Jan Hynes
(also Queenslander) has stood since 1991 highlights the quality of Julie's run from lane 9.
Congratulations Julie from all your Queensland, Australian and International athletic friends.

Message from Editor Judy Cooper ( stories away from the Athletics scene )
We have some amazing talent outside of our athletics world . Many years ago a very dear friend Rose Garvey
said to me “There is more to life than running”. Then a couple of weeks I was talking to Noeline Quinn and
during conversation she mentioned her interest in art , so I asked her for a story.

    "The Artist's Eye."
By Noeline Quinn
Hmmm, „artist‟ a term I‟ve never thought of in conjunction with myself. It seems I should start to feel
comfortable with this term being used to label me. My husband has for many years said I was this person so maybe
he is right.
I‟ve enjoyed many forms of art over the years all of which I have enjoyed to the full. I guess it all started with an
Interior design course before I was married, this was a two year course that then took me to Mt.Isa, which is North
Western Queensland, Australia where I did some interior of homes for people up there, I then started with Pottery
and went to classes under a Japanese Potter called Sheba San and an English potter call Ivan England. They
taught me so much, which was all very exciting.
The pottery period, was a world on its own, camping over night beside the kiln so you could keep it stoked, in
the early days we fired the kiln with wood (later we used an electric kiln). The excitement of opening the Kiln up and
seeing all the glowing things inside, waiting for them to cool to see how your glazing turned out. Putting designs on
the outside and mixing the colours to use sometime from nature and sometime all ready mixed. Turning the pots on
the wheel or making them by hand. We often went out to locations to dig our own clay, then we had to refine it to
be able to use.
This hobby kept me occupied for most of the 7 years we spent in this town.

We then moved to Brisbane where we bought a 40 acre property and we farmed Angora Goats, with the
mohair I‟d dye, spin and weave along with the wool from a couple of sheep I had as pets. We would dye our wool
from natural things not commercial dyes and then I would card it and spin into a usable yarn that I could then use to
knit with or weave on a loom.
Wood Turning on a lathe also keep me interested for a few years, buying my own lathe so I could work at
home. We‟d go into our forest and look for burls which when turned would be very artistic and unusual pots.
Leather work was also an interest, this I did for shops and friends. Carving designs on handbags, belts and key
cases also making many other things. In fact I was also teaching this craft too.
Then I became very interested in Photography. I decided to do a course in “Artistic” Photography which I
enjoyed for two years, this then lead into many interesting areas. We developed all our own photos and found how
to do many very interesting things with our developing as well as how to take unusual photos.
Each week we had an assignment to complete, subjects like “Old and gnarled”, we (my husband and myself)
would then go out and look for a suitable photo to suit this title. I‟d invariably end up taking at least a whole reel of
36 photos. Sometimes two Reels. Yes „reel‟, before the digital camera!
This period has never left me and has been the grounding for all the art that has followed and to-day with the
digital camera it is so much easier and a lot less expensive. You can take lots of photos and print out the ones that
you like most and/or take them through to a suitable program and improve the photo. Personally I like to do a little
graphic art with mine. In fact I need too.
For about 15 years I enjoyed China Painting, once again learning from a number of teachers, this was a lovely
period a very relaxing hobby, I painted many plates and cups, jugs etc. For special events like wedding Anniversary
and christenings I was able to paint a suitable plate for them.
During this period I became interested in Porcelain Dolls, making well over 100 and have a lot of the ones I
made in my home to-day. I became interested in making look alike dolls. “Dolls that looked like that person”. I just
loved to paint the eyes and would take a close up photo to use while I painted them.
Then I would change the moulded face to look as close as possible to the person after which the doll was fired
in order to have the sanding done and then the face and body painted, then again and again fired to the final
finished state. Dressing in an outfit that was special for that person was the next thing to complete, for example
their wedding dress, christening gown, skating outfit. Eventually I decided that enough was enough, the dolls were
getting so I did not have any more room to keep them.
Graphic art became of interest to me when I started to play with computers, I firstly bought the program
PhotoImpact and did the beginners courses and then advanced through all the courses that I could find, which was
all very interesting and challenging. Paint Shop Pro was the next program I have learnt all about, doing all the
courses I could find again. These programs offer so much and allow you to be as artistic as you feel comfortable
with. For my friends I enjoyed doing some graphic art for them involving their Papillons. Often I‟d do something as
a surprise for new owners too. This was always well received.
Christmas is a time I enjoy doing „special‟ graphic art for friends. There have been many requests to add this
person to our photo because they were not present when the photo was taken or maybe the head shot here and
the body shot there together. I just love doing all this sport of thing, if it is a challenge. Of course I‟ve had to
up grade these programs a few times to keep up with all that is new.
During this period I started painting on canvas which my husband had been saying for years that I should do.
Of course Porcelain Dolls along with china painting was very close to painting on canvas so the transition was
easy.
The very first painting I did was an Oil and „naturally‟ a Papillon, the little man that was my first Papillon so this
was fitting for a first painting. Always using my camera to get a number of photos to paint from.
Then I did a water colour of his son. After which I did a very large painting of all the Papillons I had ever had in
one canvas, this painting took me over one year to complete some of my dogs I painted two or three times in the
Painting . I had to take many photos of the Papillons to use for this so it was a vary large project

So in conclusion I feel that everything I have done has helped to put me where I am to-day.
    All knowledge is useful.

Another interesting story and what a challenge from our very own Pocket Rocket Jodie

“Goals are dreams with deadlines” (Paul Hanna)
Judy asked me to write an article on my recent trip to Nepal. To be honest, I felt silly…how was this relevant to
athletics? I have realised, however, that there are many similarities, so here‟s my story.

As a young child, I heard about this place called Nepal. It had really big mountains, Everest being the most
heard about, and these amazing people trekked or climbed up, down and over them for days on end.

Many years later, after a number of travel adventures already, my partner Dave and I agreed, it was time to visit
Nepal. A number of things happened and our trip had to be deferred, not once, not twice, but three times. Finally,
three years later, the booking was made. A 10 day trek through Annapurna Dhaulagiri, reaching an altitude of
3660m.

We‟d been higher than that before when we trekked the Inca Trail a few years back, so we weren‟t too
concerned about altitude sickness, but 10 days of trekking – wow! That was something we‟d never done before!

We decided to start our training programme early, to get a good base under our belts, just in case life took over,
as it tends to, at the end of the year, so in April 2010 we did our first “official” training hike – about an hour in Mt
Cootha Forest. We‟ve always hiked so this was a cinch!

In addition to our other exercise (pilates, yoga & running for me, and touch footy and running for Dave), we
                                                        nd
gradually increased our hikes, initially walking every 2 weekend at Mt Cootha. In July, we took a mini break at Mt
Barney and did some 4-7 hour day walks in the area.

We stepped back our training for a few weeks to recover, then stepped it up again, this time discovering some
“new” tracks in Brisbane Forest Park (D‟Aguillar Range).

For my birthday in August, we ventured to Lamington National Park to attempt the Border track – a half
marathon (21km) from O‟Reilly‟s to Binna Burra – quite a long way for a “sprinter”!

Unfortunately, my 12kg pack proved a little too much for me at this stage and I developed a knee injury in the
last few km‟s. As soon as I arrived at camp, I started a course of anti-inflammatories, applied a compression
bandage and accepted the reality that it would be stupid (and painful) to do the return walk back in the morning.
After a lift back to Brisbane next day, I started ice therapy, while sitting on the couch feeling sorry for myself, as
the rest of my friends continued on their return hike without me….mmm, happy birthday!
The following morning, I was already pain free thanks to my early intervention with treatment. I saw the physio
to get my exercises for my knee and I did them religiously for the next four months.
With the knee settled, we gradually increased our training again over the remaining months, reaching 6-7 hours,
or 18-20km for each training walk. In addition we began “steps” training at Kangaroo Point, slowly increasing this to
15-20 sets by the time we left for Nepal in December.
Day 1 arrived and we set off. We were excited, nervous & optimistic. Day 2 was about 12,000 steps….mostly
up! Kangaroo Point training was an excellent idea!
Day 4 was mostly up and already at 3300m. My toughest day & fatigue from altitude meant it was long and
slow, but we made it to our lodge and took in the views.
Day 6 we reached Kopra Ridge, our highest point and the view of the surrounding (8000m+) peaks and down
over the lower mountains, was nothing short of spectacular. What elation to have made it to this point!
Over the next few days we made our decent and I faced my fear – how would my knee hold up with all those
steps down? No problem, not even a niggle. My persistence with those boring physio exercises had paid off.
Despite not having a shower for 10 days, this was kind of fun!
Day 10, we reached the end point. Exhilaration! We had achieved our goal.
As with anything worth doing in life, there are often setbacks and challenges, but if you believe you can do it, you
set realistic goals and you pick yourself up when things get tough, you can achieve anything, and now I am one of
those amazing people who have trekked in Nepal! Jodie Schubert

Here is an update of what we have organized for the World Masters Track & Field at Sacramento.
We have plenty of accommodation still available and it is the best!
Group departure Sunday 3rd July for San Francisco, 2nd July at 7:20pm from Perth.
Arrive 3 July in San Francisco and coach 1hr:40m to Sacramento, arriving at 1pm.
For those coming straight home after the champs your flight leaves SFO, 9:45pm on the 17th July.
A prompt departure from Sacramento at 5:30pm is essential. Coach arranged.
Fourteen nights at the Marriott Residence Inn, 13 nights for those doing Las Vegas & returning home
directly after the champs. It is necessary to fly one leg of the group fare to get the group rate. If you are
doing something different, give us the opportunity to quote, there is less chance of error if all
arrangements are co-ordinated under one umberella
I have decided not to provide shirts for the group who are doing the package with us. Logistically it was
becoming a major hurdle to get the large number of different sized shirts then distribute to the widely
dispersed group in time. Quite a number have not worn the shirts in the past so instead of shirts I am
providing 6 day passes per person for transport on the Sacramento Regional Transit system. This covers
buses and light rail. I will have more complete information in your ticket wallet before you leave.
    Transport to the tracks
1/ The 87 bus runs in 30 min frequency with a capacity of approximately 84 passengers.
The light rail trains run at 15 minute frequency with a capacity of 150 passengers per car.
The trip from your Hotel to the main stadium at Sacramento State University will take you
approximately 12 minutes using bus 87 (to the front of the college then 10 minute walk). There are
options for this trip using other buses that will get you closer to the stadium (approx. 23 minutes).
2/ The trip from Residence Inn to Sacramento City College,(walks & 5000 & 10000 runs) will
take you approximately 52-57 minutes depending on which way you travel (two options
3/ The trip from Hotel to Granite Park, X country will take you approximately 25 minutes.

Christchurch
Quite a few Gold Coast Masters members either hail from New Zealand or have connections with New Zealand, and
some of them have relatives and friends living in the beautiful city of Christchurch.

As well, many of us have fond memories of Christchurch, having travelled there for the 2006 Oceania Masters
Athletics Championships held in that city.

Today, I revisited video images I took whilst in Christchurch for those Oceania Championships. The contrast between
the beauty and peace of the city and surrounds on that video, and the images of devastation that I have seen on
television following the earthquake are stark and tragic.

Our thoughts are with our friends in New Zealand, and in particular with those residents in the Christchurch area, and
those of our local members who have relatives and friends there.
