your child is wearing a lifejacket an adult needs to be in the water with them within arm’s reach and
the lifejacket needs to be snug. Remember, a flotation device should not replace a watchful adult – a
small child could get stuck face down or if the jacket is too big the child could slip out and under.
The final myth is that swimming lessons are for children only. While there are more lessons
offered for children than adults, lessons for adults are still offered year round at many facilities. It is
never too late to learn to swim as long as you’re willing. According to the American Red Cross, children
younger than 6 months should not be swimming, but there is no age too old to get into the water.
While many adults have more difficult time learning, it is not impossible so long as the student is willing
and trusts the instructor. Swimming is a life skill as lessons can help instill confidence and enrich the
life of the student. There are plenty of sports that involve water such as crew, surfing, kayaking, water
polo, scuba diving, and snorkeling to name a few. Knowing how to swim can help make those sports
and many more much more enjoyable. Swimming is like walking; the more you do it, the easier it gets.
Henderson Hall offers aqua aerobics classes during the weekdays, utilizing in-water stationary bikes
and treadmills, as well as provides swimming lessons for children and adults. Our hours are 0600 –
2000 during the week and 1000-2000 Saturdays and 1200-2000 on Sundays. For more information
