                              suspect in the shooting spree that wounded U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle

                              Giffords and killed six others is mentally incompetent to stand trial, putting the case

                              on hold indefinitely.



                              Because of U.S. District Judge Larry Burns' ruling, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner

                              will be sent to a federal facility for up to four months in an attempt to restore his

                              competency.



                              Eric Holder The ruling came at the heels of Loughner's courtroom outburst, an

                              incident that resulted in his removal from the hearing. Officials reported that

                              Loughner looked at the judge and said "thanks for the freak show. I saw her die in

                              front of me" before his removal.



                              Loughner watched the remainder of the hearing on a television screen in another

                              room. Loughner was later brought back into the courtroom, where Burns gave him

                              the option to remain at the hearing and behave or continue watching the hearing

                              on television in the other room. Loughner chose to watch the hearing on television.



                              The ruling came after Loughner spent five weeks in March and April at a federal

                              facility in Springfield, Mo., where he was examined by two court-appointed mental

                              health professionals. The two were asked to determine whether Loughner

                              understands the consequences of the case against him. Prosecutors had

                              requested the mental exam, citing suspicious behavior prior to the shooting spree

                              including homemade YouTube videos in which they believe a hooded Loughner

                              wore garbage bags and burned an American flag while criticizing the government.



                              Loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 federal charges stemming from the Jan. 8

                              shooting at a meet-and-greet event outside a Safeway grocery store that

                              wounded Giffords and 12 others and killed six people, including a 9-year-old girl

                              and a federal judge.
