                       Application for Participation 2010 NCTE Annual Conference “Road Trip”

                                  APPLICATION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 22, 2010

Candidates have the opportunity to attend the NCTE Annual Conference in Orlando, FL at Walt Disney World from
Thursday, November 18th through Sunday, November 21st. This trip is not required for membership in Winthrop
University Student Affiliate National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); however, membership in NCTE (national &
Winthrop student-affiliate) is required for participation in the Annual Conference “Road Trip”. Winthrop University will
be providing transportation for those students who register for the trip; the van will be leaving Winthrop University from
the parking lot in front of Bancroft at approx. 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 18th. Dr. Prickett will be driving the van.
We will return Sunday, November 21st, late in the evening, arriving back at Winthrop approximately 11:00 p.m./12:00
a.m.

Required Events:

Candidates are required to attend the conference sessions. Absence from the conference sessions or any misconduct
will result in the candidate re-paying Winthrop University/Department of English for the cost of his/her transportation
and lodging. If a candidate is chosen to participate but is unable to attend or withdraws from the trip, a waiting list
candidate will fill the open seat. Conference registration fee refunds will be subject to NCTE refund procedures and be
the responsibility of the candidate.

Candidate Required Costs (in bold):

     1.    NCTE Membership (student): $25.00 paid directly to NCTE

     2.    Winthrop University Student Affiliate National Council of Teachers of English: $5.00

     3.    Conference Registration (student): $90.00 paid directly to NCTE

     4.    Food: Candidate responsibility: approximately $25-50/day x 4 days: $100-$200

     5.    Lodging at Disney’s Beach Club Resort: funded by Winthrop University CAS & Department of English

     6.    Transportation (Travel/Van Rental/Fuel): funded by Winthrop University CAS & Department of English

Thus, the estimated total cost of the Annual Conference “Road Trip” per selected candidate is $220 – $320*, which
includes NCTE membership (national and Winthrop student-affiliate), conference registration, food, lodging, and round-
trip transportation.

*OPTIONAL (AFTER CONFERENCE HOURS) CANDIDATE EXPENSE: Disney offers a 2-day AFTER 4 p.m. Park Hopper ticket
packages for $140.84 or a 1-day AFTER 4 p.m. Park Hopper Ticket packages for $96.71.

Deadlines: There are a limited number of seats available; thus, the deadline is a firm cut-off deadline.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 22, 2010: The completed application form must be in Dr. Prickett’s physical possession (no later
than Wednesday, 9.22.10).

FRIDAY, SEPT. 24, 2010: Applications will be reviewed by a panel of Winthrop University professors. All applicants will be
notified of their status (selected participant or waitlisted) by 11 PM Friday, September 24, 2010.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 28, 2010: If selected, proof of (1) NCTE membership (national and Winthrop student-affiliate) and (2)
NCTE Annual Conference Registration must be provided to Dr. Prickett (no later than Tuesday, 9.28.10). If not completed,
reserved space will be forfeited to next person on waiting list.

       1.   Winthrop University College of Arts and Sciences & the Department of English are making an investment in you
            – as a current candidate and a future teacher—with an expectation of service and/or leadership in your chosen
            field. Please write—in 250 words or less—ways you believe that participation in this conference will prepare
            you to serve and/or lead in English Education at Winthrop and beyond.

       2.   Please request a recommendation from a former or current professor. In a short email, s/he should endorse your
            selection as a participant at a professional conference (emailed to prickettr@winthrop.edu).
