SEO: Most of people in here will be aware of what exactly this word means, but let's just get started with some basics for those people who are still unaware of this magical word "SEO" SEO: These 3 letters stand for "Search Engine Optimization" Before getting in deep, let's start with dictionary/terminology of SEO (some basic terms) SEO (Search Engine Optimizing): This refers to the practice/action of trying to optimize your page rank for the search engine, more Page Rank (PR) means more strong position in Search Engines. SEM (Search Engine Marketing): Basically it refers to all the Search Engine techniques and practices generally undertaken by businesses. PR: Abbreviation for PageRank: Google's trademarked measure of link/page popularity for web pages. Keywords: A word or words that a SE (Search Engine) user might use to find rel- evant result/web page(s). If a keyword doesn't appear anywhere in the text of your web page, it's highly unlikely your page will appear in the search results Long Tail Keywords: Those 3 and 4 keyword phrases which are very specific to whatever you are selling/trading/providing. You see, whenever a customer uses a highly specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are ac- tually going to buy. Such type of keywords are really useful and effective. Back-links: Back Links/Inbound Links: Hyperlinks that are found on other sites, but linked back to your site will be called backlinks or inbound links. Spiders: Also known as Bots, Robots or Crawlers, They literally crawl all over the internet in a matter of seconds & comes back with information collected from millions of different web sites. When people write content for SEO, they are writ- ing for people, but through these spiders as a 3rd party or a messenger. Adsense: Who will not be aware of "Adsense". It is a Google marketing techni- que in which you place ads on your site, around various links/content/info, or on other public sites around your content. Pay per click (PPC) is commonly utilized & any profits are shared with Google. Canonical URL: Canonicalization, as used by Google, is the process of choosing the best URL when there are different & several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. When Google "canonicalizes" a URL, it tries to pick the URL that seems like the best representative from a set of URLs that are referring to the same page, eg: www.example.com example.com/ www.example.com/index.html example.com/home.asp Adwords: This term is related with Adsense. It is a much more complicated cam- paign/run regarding the value of various keywords in search results of a search engine, & which words to choose or should be chosen for your specific site’s con- tent. Cloaking: Cloaking is the technique of serving a different page to a search engine spider than what a human visitor sees on website. This technique is abused by spammers for keyword stuffing. No doubt it is a violation of the Terms Of Serv- ice of most search engines on internet and could be grounds for banning. CTR: Abbreviation for Click Through Rate: It is a ratio of clicks per impressions in a PPC campaign. Higher the CTR lower the earning and lower the CTR high- er the earning, kind of inverse proportionality/ Nofollow: The tag rel="nofollow" is automatically inserted into every href link in many blogs, forum posts, and wikis. The tag instructs the search engine to not fol- low the link. This results in no backlink credit for the URL in the link. Dofollow: It is the opposite of Nofollow, the tag instructs not to restrict search en- gine from following the link and due to which backlinks are formed. Off-page SEO: It refers to efforts to improve a website's search engine rankings by increasing/making the quality and number of backlinks to the site. On-page SEO: It refers to efforts to optimize your own web site, its coding, direc- tory use of structural markup and file nomenclature, and content. Here are some Tips for your SEO knowledge: Awareness: See where you stand You are not sure, if your SEO efforts are working unless you keep an eye or moni- tor your search standings. It is must to keep an eye on your PR (Page Rank) with tools like Alexa and Google toolbar. It is also very important to see or track from where exactly your visitors are coming from and what keywords they are using to locate your site. Keywords: You should be aware of selecting and placing appropriate keywords in your web- site. e.g: In your titles, content URLs and image names, sometimes it is image which makes someone your visitor just because of those keywords used in that image. The best way to choose keywords is: Think about your keywords (as search terms) how would someone will search if he is looking for the information which is on your page. The title tags & page header are the most important places to put keywords. BEWARE: Putting ridiculous or huge amount of keywords on your site will put a label of "spammer" on you and search engine bots are programmed in such a way that they ignore such type of sites. Linking back to yourself: There is no more basic strategy for SEO than the integration of internal links into your website -- it is an easy way to boost traffic to individual pages. Your linking to archives should be standard when creating new content. Make An- chor text search-engine-friendly: "The more relevant words point to a page, the more your page will appear in search results when a user starts search with specific terms. Be sure your all links are appropriate and to the point, don't cross the line into cha- os of linking - you don't want your visitors of site to get annoyed by those links, do you? Create a Sitemap: A page listing & linking to all the other main pages on your site -- makes it easier for bots/spiders/crawlers to search your site. "The less number of clicks necessary to get to a page on your website, the better" Search Friendly Links or URLs: Make your URLs/links more search-engine-friendly (Search-able) by naming them with clear, short and to the topic keywords. Don't Use Flash: Avoid it- Flash might look good, but it does nothing for your SEO. According to the Search Engine Journal, "Flash, Frames & AJAX all have a common problem – you can’t link to a single page... Don’t use Frames at all, Flash and AJAX for good SEO re- sults." Image descriptions: Spiders only look for texts, not text which are in your images, that's why you need to make the keywords associated with your images as descriptive as possible. Begin with your image names, adding an "ALT" tag allows you to include a rich- keywords description for each n' every image on your website. Images which are surrounded by visible text is valuable for SEO, adding captions to all your images & being descriptive with text used in images is suggested. CONTENT: Content is King You might have heard this phrase that Content is king it is not said by anybody else but Bill Gates. Your content should be fresh & updated regularly it is a crucial way for increasing traffic on your website. Content should be: 1. Reader-Friendly Content 2. SEO-Friendly Content Now let us be a little bit specific with both of above terms 1- Reader-friendly Content: As a writer, you should be aware of SEO & its techniques but again, you are writ- ing for human readers so it should be user-friendly & your content should first of all serve this purpose. You need to make sure that you keep readers both happy and encourage them to come back for more and take active part in the conversa- tions which will be really helpful for maintaning traffic on your website. Keep It Interesting Readers can find hundreds of articles related with same topic like your articles/con- tent has so give them a reason that why they should read your content, for sake of making your content more interesting you must understand expectations, likes and dislikes of your target audience. Don't beat about the bush Keep your content relevant for your readers (don’t write about everything – spe- cialize and be special) Hot Topics Focus on the topics which are at the highest boiling point, which means select those topics which are fresh & on fire, and being discussed. Title Make your title & headline attractive, catchy and impossible to miss. Short & to the Point Keep it short, nothing is more annoying than a never ending article so it is better to define something in short & simple words for your reader. Relevant Images Add Relevant Images, for sake of making your article more interesting you should focus on relevant images, it makes your articles not-so-boring and this is thing is to- tal user-friendly. *Be Original, Do not copy content from any other website if you will do it then you may have lots of competitions on internet be original and you'll get huge visitors. 2- Seo-Friendly Content No doubt, Search engines plays the major role in bringing traffic towards you. Google bots are basically content detectors and they always look for fresh and orig- inal content everyday which means that your position on search engines is never permanent, therefore apart from writing such type of articles which are completely user-friendly you should also focus on SEO-friendly as well. Track Keywords and Use Them Accordingly Keep a track of the keywords and use them according to their popularity on inter- net. Keywords are the basic part of SEO & position of your site depends upon key- words you've used in your content. During writing an article, make sure you do a little bit keyword analysis & select the right and appropriate amount of keywords in your article Understand Crawlers, talk their language Your content's structure should give a clear image for readers as well as for bots/crawlers. These crawlers would love your content if it is well specified. There are some specific rules when it comes to SEO which should be respected. Make sure that the title of the article (<title></title>) is concise and relevant to the content of the article. Also, relevant subtitles (<h1>,<h2>) play a very important part in putting a good show of your content to the crawlers. The H1 and H2 Texts are highly important – Why? Just because they show the search engine the main subjects & Table of Contents for the content to be indexed. Make these keyword friendly and reflective of your page’s title tag. Hyperlinks or quotation marks also should be used. Also add alt tags to your im- ages because they help the crawlers to understand images only if they are relevant to the content. Social Media: Social networking Social networking not only allows people for making friends and for friends to meet again online but also it provides a new opportunity in the field of SEO strat- egy, there are several ways a SEO practitioner can use social networking sites to in- crease ranking, PR, build trust and authority within a selected niche.
