CONTENTS IN DETAILS :

1. How to prepare your ads to get maximum number of repeated
visitors and maximum sales. This is to cover both paid and free news
paper ads and tips to prepare ads for news papers.
A huge percentage of newspaper advertising is a complete waste of money. Newspaper
advertising can be profitable, but all too often, it isn’t. This is especially true for small
businesses.

Many small businesses feel they have to advertise, and without much thought or research
toss ads into the local paper. Typically the only reason they have chosen newspaper
advertising as their communication vehicle is because the newspaper ad salesperson was the
first person to call on them!

Why don’t newspaper ads always work for small businesses? The most common reason is that
they get lost in the paper. Small businesses tend to run small ads with mediocre copy and no
illustrative materials, such as photographs or art. And small business people often don’t take
the time to measure ad results. Without measuring results, they have no sound basis for
improving their creativity, their copy, their offers, or even their choice of media.
Product ad dilemma
It is extremely hard to make product ads work. For instance, we placed eighth- to
quarter-page ads for different books that we publish in the national edition of the New York
Times and regional editions of the Wall Street Journal in cooperation with various book store
chains. These chains stock our books in hundreds of their stores, and we are able to track
sales through their computer inventory systems and determine whether or not advertising can
be linked to a sales increase on any given book. We found that an ad costing in the $2,000
to $10,000 range, not including production costs, typically generates less than ten additional
book sales.

These product ads, in effect, caused a 95% to 99% net loss in profitability.

The only “winning” ad that we placed for one of our books, for instance, ran under an
extremely clever headline and offered a terrific discount. Still, it covered costs but did not
net a profit!

Product ad tips
Concentrate your product ad dollars in large ads rather than in frequent ones. Develop a
punchy headline and include snappy illustrations or photos. Include sell copy for the serious
potential buyer. And don’t forget to tell prospects where they can purchase your product.

Service ad tips
Run service ads where prospective customers will typically see them. The service directory of
the local newspaper is usually an appropriate spot. Service ads need to clearly state the
nature of the service offered. A great headline isn’t necessary because the prospect is
generally already interested in obtaining the type of service you are offering. But you do need
to convey a powerful competitive message through your ad. This advantage can take the
form of a free trial, new customer offer, special bonus, or free estimate. If your competitors
advertise on any particularly strong points that have great consumer appeal, match those
points. And highlight a unique reason for clients to call on you first. Some service seekers call
every service provider for quotes, some call two or three, and some call one. Make sure yours
is the first call made.

And also remember, despite what an advertising salesperson may tell you, the most
compelling, not necessarily the largest, ads tend to generate more “first calls.”

Generous offers
People expect to see “sale” and “specials” advertised in newspapers.

Whether you are advertising products or services, try to offer a special price or bonus to
your customers. Make the offer generous. Ten percent off the regular price, especially in this
age of national discount retailers and competitive pricing, just won’t cut it.

It costs a lot of money to run ads and response is often iffy, so offer deep discounts on a
limited range of products or services. This is a tactic that lures the customers in and, ideally,
while they are browsing, they will purchase other non discounted items that have a higher
margin. In a best-case scenario, they will become regular customers.

Special rates
Large metropolitan newspapers and many small local or regional newspapers offer a lower ad
rate called the “local” or “retail” rate to local or retail businesses. If you are selling a product
through local retailers, you will save money if you get the retailer to place the ad even if you
reimburse it for all costs involved. In some industries, however, the retailer typically shares
some portion of the ad space with the manufacturer or supplier.

Newspapers also offer volume discounts if you guarantee to place a certain number of ads
over the course of a year. Read the fine print regarding penalties for non fulfillment on any
contract you sign that involves a “frequency” rate. Generally, however, the penalty for failing
to meet your placement obligations is payment of the “non frequency” rate for those ads you
did place.

Still, it can be painful to reimburse the publication for the higher ad rate.

Negotiating rates
Generally, you can negotiate rates off the rate card with smaller papers or papers that don’t
have the readership edge in their marketplace. And if your ads are particularly clever, you
can sometimes negotiate a better rate deal with a larger newspaper.

Several years ago I wanted to run several full-page ads in a newspaper owned by a large
U.S. media company. This company was notorious for adhering to their rate card. But I was
determined to negotiate a discount. I called my advertising representative’s boss and politely
explained to her that I needed to negotiate a lower rate or I wasn’t going to place an ad at
all. This creative individual, wanting to keep my business but unable to go against a strict
company policy on rates, established a new rate category just for me! I ran my ads for 30
percent less than any other advertiser in the publication!

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR NEWS PAPER ADS.

1. Have a goal/plan: Yogi Berra once said that if youdon’t know where you are going, any
road will take youthere. Knowing what you want to accomplish may be halfthe battle in
creating good advertising.

 2. See your advertising from the customerperspective: Sometimes we are too close to
ourbusiness to understand how customers see our offerings.Are we making the point they
want us to make? Do theyunderstand our language?

3. Include benefits, not features in youradvertising: What is in it for me? Only $499.99 is not
asmeaningful as save $50.

4. Sweat the details: Hours, locations, credit cards, are little things we too often take for
granted. Did wedescribe things right, include a picture, all the details makean ad effective.

5. Time your ad properly: When do you want action tobe taken as a result of your ad? When
do people in yourmarket get paid? When do your customers read the paper?When do people
most likely want you to be advertising?

6. Balance frequency with your budget: Very fewpeople are in the market for your goods and
services at anyparticular moment in time. The more often and wider youcast your net,
balanced against fishing where the fish areand your budget, the better off you are.

7. Be consistent: Remember that you will get tired ofyour advertising way sooner than your
customers will. Try tobe consistent with your sizes, your templates, your typestyle, your
format, the day you run and your brand. By doingso, people will see your ads as even more
effective.

8. Be strategic with your ads: If readers eyes move from top to bottom and left to right,
consider that flow and what you place in every segment of your ad tooptimize effectiveness.

9. Consider the use of attention getters: Creativeuse of white space, illustration/art, color all
tend to drawattention to your ad. Remember that readers make thedecision to read your ad
very quickly. Often in a second ortwo. What will make them stop and read your ad?

10. Track what works for you: The more youmeasure results of your ads the more likely you
are torepeat successfully what has worked for you in the past.Measure sales, measure
coupons, measure image, but tryto do more than anecdotally get a gut feel for how your

Ezine Advertising is a great way to deliver highly targeted traffic to your website. If you pick
the right ezines, and the right type of ads, you will experience above-average conversion
rates for the product you sell.

What Is An Ezine?

An ezine or newsletter is an electronic magazine delivered via email to people who have
signed up (opted-in) to receive it. Ezines are published on different schedules (some weekly,
some monthly or bi-monthly) and they can feature extensive content or just anouncements
(for example, when a website is updated or when a new article goes online).

The main advantage of ezines as advertising vehicles is that they are delivered to a very
targeted group of readers. Usually, the quality of the subscribers will be higher in ezines that
focus on a single, very narrow topic.

Types of Ezine Ads

Ezine ads generally falls into one of three categories:

Classified Ads: They are the cheapest (sometimes even free), but they are also the least
effective. Usually, classified ads are buried at the bottom of the ezine and consist only of a
few words. Free classified ads are sometimes given away as an incentive to subscribe.
Usually the best results with classified ads are obtained in the largest ezines (fifty thousands
of subscribers or higher), since response rates are usually very poor.

Sponsor Ads: They are priced higher than classified ads and are usually found at the top of
the ezine, or in the middle (within the content). They allow for more words, and are more
effective than classified ads. If you are promoting affiliate products with moderate profit
margins, sponsor ads may be the way to go.

Solo Ads: A solo ad is an email that contains only your offer, and that is sent to everyone on
the mailing list. No other content is included, so you get the reader's full attention. Since a
solo ad is usually seen as an endorsement from the ezine publisher, your message will enjoy a
great deal of credibility. Solo ads are expensive, though, and you should reserve them for
your best products (those with an excellent profit margin and not a lot of competition).

What is a Joint Venture?

"Joint Venture" is one of the most common buzz phrases in the Internet marketing arena.
However, there is nothing misterious about it. A joint venture is just a Solo Ad where instead
of paying a fixed fee to run it you reach an agreement with the ezine publisher to split the
profits 50%-50% (or any other mutually agreed percentage split). The beauty of joint
ventures is that you can tap into somebody else's mailing list and pay only if you actually sell
something. Joint ventures are a clear example of how email marketing can be utilized to
create a win-win situation.

Before you spend money on ezine ads, it is a good idea to do some research: ask the
publisher what is the typical conversion rate, or read the testimonials and contact those
people to see what kind of conversion rate they enjoyed.

To estimate if an ad will be profitable, you must know what your gross profit per sale is and,
based on the size of the subscriber base and the typical conversion rate, estimate what your
total gross profit will be. If your total estimated gross profit is more than the cost of the ad,
you may want to give it a shot. In summary:

Gross Profit per Sale x Number of Subscribers x Typical Conversion Rate - Cost of Ad = Total
Profit/Loss
You must also pay attention to your headline, your ad copy, and the copy of your landing
page, since they can all have a dramatic influence in your conversion rate.

Where do I find quality ezines that accept ads?

There are several good online directories that list ezines by topic and subscriber base size,
and provide information on advertising options and costs. Probably the best ezine directory is
the Directory of Ezines, where you can find relevant information on almost 1000 high-quality
ezines, most of which accept articles, reaching around 39 million readers. The Directory of
Ezines charges a small yearly subscription fee. However, if you are serious about email
marketing it is well worth it.

6 Tips To Create Effective Solo Ad That Pulls Results

How many times have you... heard that running solo ads in ezines is the most effective way
to advertise? Every single marketer swears that solo ads can bring you big profits.
Well, I've been placing solo ads in various marketing ezines for 5 months now. And I have to
agree: solo ads work... if you know HOW to use them.

How to write effective solo ad I've learned the hard way. I've lost $527.00 in my first two
months. Now, here is the good news: you don't have to waste your time trying to figure out
how to create a good solo ad. I've done it for you. :)

By following these six tips you'll be able to create solo ads that produce incredible results.

1. Choose the ezine you want to advertise in very carefully.

Don't only consider ezine size. The truth is that smaller ezines produce better results than
ezines with large subscriber base. I always prefer to run my solo ad in ezine with 8,000
subscribers than in ezine with 100,000. Not because it's cheaper, but because small lists are
usually more responsive.

Before buying the ad in any ezine read a couple of issues. Does it provide readers with quality
content? Does it shows the personality of its editor? Would you subscribe to that ezine?

Advertising in poor quality ezines is a waste of money. No one is reading them anyway.

2. Get the readers attention with the headline.

It is very important to make sure that you can add your headline in a subject line of solo ad.
If the subject line reads "Our Ezine Solo Ad" most of subscribers won't open it. You have to
add your *attention grabbing* subject line.

Headlines like "Check this out" or "Here is my new product" won't work.

Get their attention! Spark the desire to learn more! Give them a *reason* to open your email.

3. Don't sell anything in your ad.
Yep, you've read it right. Do not sell anything in your ad. Your main goal there is not to
create a sale, but to create a lead, create a prospect who will buy from you later.

Would you prefer to generate 3-5 sales or to get 300-500 prospects ready to buy from you?

Offer free trial, free report, free ebook, free ecourse. Give away something valuable first.
Create a prospect list. Establish relationships. And then *suggest* your product. Using this
simple technique I achieved 10-15% conversion rate with my ecourse.

4. Make your ad easy to read.

Readers usually scan the message. They are busy, they don't have time to read your ad in
complete details. It is your job to make it as easy for them as possible to scan it.

Use a short paragraphs. Use short sentences. Like this.

Use simple words. Don't forget that subheadlines work great. As well as bullets. Often
subheadlines and bullet list is all that people read.

5. Tell the benefits.

If you offer something for free that doesn't mean that all the readers will jump into your offer
automatically. You have to "sell" your free stuff too.

Tell me why should I bother and subscribe to your ecourse? What's there for me? Will I
improve my life? Business?

Write down the complete list of benefits. Then make every benefit as powerful as you can.
Use a power words. Give details.

And then put all your benefits into a bullet list. You're almost ready!

6. Create sense of urgency.

Make the readers act now. Tell them that tomorrow will be too late. Cause you've got just 50
free copies. Or they will be available only till midnight.

Give them a reason to act now. Explain why there is no time to procrastinate. Create a fear
of loosing, create a sense of limited availability. That always works great

PPC MANAGEMENT: Just What Can You Pay Per Click?

The most important thing to know before starting your PPC campaign is how much you can
afford to bid for a keyword. High traffic keywords on Overture and Google – the leading PPC
providers - can cost $5.00 per click for a top ranking. Can you afford that?

Consider this: the typical e-commerce site converts about 2% of its visitors. That means you
need to bring 50 visitors to your site before you make a sale. At $5.00 per click, you'll spend
$250 dollars to generate one sale. Ouch!

Keep in mind that you usually want one of the top 3 listings for a keyword. These are the
listings distributed to most of the PPC engine's partner sites. For example, a #3 ranking on
Overture will place your listing on Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista. A #7 listing won't appear on
any of these search engines.

So you're caught in a catch-22: you want a high PPC ranking to get traffic, but the top
rankings for popular words are too expensive.

Cast Your Net Broadly

The solution is to cast your net broadly, targeting a large number of less popular keywords.
These words are usually less expensive and, taken as a group, can give you a considerable
volume of traffic.

For example, suppose you run a ski resort. The keyword "ski vacation" currently receives over
60,000 searches per month. That's great, but it costs $5.01 per click for the top ranking.
Instead of competing head-to-head for that keyword, you would be better off choosing "ski
trip" (4,771 monthly searches at $0.57 per click for the top spot) and "ski lodge" (4,244
monthly searches at $0.55 per click for the top spot).

By targeting a number of these less popular keywords, we get nearly the same traffic as if we
had targeted "ski vacation," but at a fraction of the cost.

Note that this is the opposite of the strategy you typically use in your search engine
optimization campaign. In an SEO campaign, you focus on perhaps a half dozen high traffic
words. That's because it takes a lot of hard word to earn a top listing.

In contrast, it's relatively easy to create a new PPC listing. Since you don't pay unless
someone clicks on your listing, there's no added cost for doing this, so targeting a large
number of keywords makes sense.

The word "ski chalet" only receives 930 searches per month. So what? At $0.52 per click, it's
worth adding to your PPC campaign.

It's common for PPC advertisers to target dozens of keywords. I've managed PPC campaigns
for clients using over 1,000 words.

Smart PPC Management

The downside of this approach is that it can be hard to manage such a large number of
keywords. You'll want to track your listings, making sure your rankings haven't dropped. Plus,
you'll want to know which keywords are sending you traffic and converting visitors into
customers.

Many businesses also use a PPC bid management software like Bid Rank or GoToast to
manage their listings. These software packages track your listings, and can adjust your bid if
you drop in the rankings.

Many companies also outsource the management of their PPC campaigns. Most SEOs now
offer PPC management services. These options cost money, but they usually pay for
themselves by running your campaigns more efficiently.

Keep in mind that you don't have to use a software package or a consultant to start your
PPC campaign. But you do need to know what sort of cost per click you can afford. If you
decide that $2.00 per click is your maximum bid, then stick with it. Don't get into an
emotional bidding war if you lose a top ranking. It's much smarter to look for new and cheaper
keywords. Cast your net broadly and you'll save money.
