                STATEMENT FROM
        CONGRESSWOMAN-ELECT KATHY HOCHUL

After winning the special election in New York’s 26th Congressional
District, Congresswoman-elect Kathy Hochul released the following
prepared remarks from her victory speech at the UAW Hall:

Thank you! I first want to thank you all for being here tonight and
supporting our campaign.

I just received two very gracious calls from Jane Corwin and Jack Davis
and I want to congratulate both of them on a very hard fought campaign.

I am so incredibly humbled tonight.

I am so looking forward to working for ALL the residents of the 26th
District, as I fight for them on the issues I know they care about in Washington.

Thank you to my family. My husband of 27 years, Bill- my rock and my
inspiration---my son Billy, my daughter Katie, my sister Sheila, all who have
worked tirelessly for me. And two of my four brothers who are here tonight, Mike
and Paul, you are everything to me.

And I want to especially thank my parents Jack and Patricia. You two are
what inspired me to get involved in the political process and give back to our
community every single day and I will never forget those lessons.

To my family, all of you believed in me from the very beginning and I thank
you.

And I have to give my mother a double thanks. She’s been phone
banking for us for months now from her home down in Florida. I’ve met voters in
diners all across the district and so many of them have said to me “I just spoke to
your mother the other day and I couldn’t tell her no.” I assure you. I learned a
long time ago, you do not want to tell my mother no.

I want to thank Len Lenihan. You’re such a good friend, and a longtime
supporter. Your help, along with the help of the six other county chairs of
Niagara, Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties, have all
been invaluable to our campaign. We couldn’t have gotten this far without their
grassroots organization.

I want to thank the Working Families Party, the labor community, EMILY’s
List and Planned Parenthood for their early endorsements and all their hard work
over the last few months.

I also want to thank Senator Gillibrand, Senator Schumer, Governor
Cuomo, Lieutenant Governor Duffy, Congresswoman Slaughter,
Congresswoman Maloney, and Congressman Brian Higgins, who was with me
from the very, very beginning.

And, once again, I want to thank everyone here tonight – the greatest
supporters and volunteers and staff, who have all worked tirelessly for me over
the last few months. I had an amazing campaign team and I am forever grateful
to them.

Tonight’s victory is an achievement many called impossible.

Tonight we showed that many voters are willing to ignore a party label and
vote for the person and for the message they believe in.

We showed that thousands upon thousands of voters are more powerful
than millions of dollars in outside money.

We showed that our grassroots army – including thousands of donors and
thousands of volunteers, who knocked on more than 53,000 doors and made
more than 77,000 calls and over the last four days –could overcome our
enrollment disadvantage and the fact that we were outspent by more than 2-to-1.

You have all shown me, and this campaign, so much support.

We have shown that with forward-thinking vision, with new leadership, and
the right issues behind us, we can make real change for the future.

We can help Western New Yorkers get back to work by helping small
businesses create jobs.

And we can balance our budget the right way--- not on the backs of our
seniors---- but by closing corporate loopholes for companies that ship jobs
overseas, and ending subsidies to Big Oil and yes, by making the multi-
millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.

And we can ensure we do not decimate Medicare.

We will keep the promises made to our seniors who have spent their lives
paying into Medicare, so they can count on health care when they need it most.

Tonight I am humbled and truly honored. I believe that public service is a
privilege that must never be abused.

When I go to Washington, I will take with me the memory of the faces of
the hundreds of people young and old who I met in diners from Dansville, to
Greece, to Batavia, to Lockport, to Amherst.

The people I told that if you have faith in me, I will have your back. And
the one face seared into my memory is that of the man who pulled a ten dollar bill
out of his pocket and said I live on $100 a week, but I want you to have this
because we need you in Washington.

I will fight for him and everyone else who put their faith in me today.

       I am inspired.

       I’m motivated.

       And I’m ready to serve.

Again, I thank everyone for this honor.

       Thank you!
