The Masdar Development offers a world-class showcase for sustainability. The development will
become a forum for research, business, and creativity for sustainable technologies and
entrepreneurship within the context of a campus community setting. The City’s sustainability
framework establishes the standards and criteria for achieving zero carbon, zero waste, and 100
percent renewable energy.

Masdar will reinvent the traditional Arabic city where the person, not the vehicle is paramount.
Drawing inspiration from, and reinterpreting the traditional Arabic cities’ environmental and
cultural response to the climate, we seek to reduce our carbon footprint by developing a compact
city that allows for easy pedestrian movement and expands the comfort zone of the city thru
control of sun and wind to create the highest quality of life that is also sustainable.
Narrow shaded streets reduce outdoor temperatures by as much as 20ºC making it possible to
comfortably enjoy the outdoors for a longer period of time than is currently possible in Abu Dhabi
due to summer heat and humidity. Carefully planned landscape and water features also aid in
reducing temperatures while enhancing the quality of the street.
By bringing together living, commerce, education, sport, and civic functions in an integrated,
planned community, we can provide for all our residents’ needs without requiring travel outside
the city and reduce our environmental impact without sacrificing quality of life. By bringing
together all of these resources, we are able to reach out to the region by providing services that
will ultimately support sustainable development throughout Abu Dhabi, the region, the country and
provide a functioning example to the world.

Masdar will be the first land-based city to operate without fossil fueled autos and trucks. Through
the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and the Material Rapid Transit (MRT), and breakthrough
transport technologies it will revolutionize and re-define urban transport as we know it today.
