Ready for the emerging markets
The rise of the BRIC countries
BRIC is the synonym for the four aspiring countries of the emerging markets: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Goldman Sachs predicted that most of the BRIC countries will surpass the national economies of the western world in terms of GDP by 2045. They will also become leaders in foreign trade. These developments have a great impact on western economies and business strategies in the corporate world, for example, BMW spends billions of dollars on the purchase of technical parts in South East Asia, and Bosch maintains three plants in India. More and more multi-national companies are expanding into and within the BRICs. The opposite is also true – local Indian companies like Tata, Wipro or HCL have subsidiaries in Germany for quite some time now. Severstal (Russia) and Petrobas (Brazil) may not be widely known yet, but they are set to make a large impact in Western Europe and North America. Globalization is no longer as polarized between the West and emerging markets as some have perceived it to be. The trading volume between China and India amounts to around $ 30 billion (with rates increasing to around 50%) and Indian car manufacturers are outsourcing to China already. In the meantime more aspiring countries are ready to go global: BRIMC (including Mexico), BRICS (including South Africa) and BRIC +2 (including Mexico & South Africa). The EBS has foreseen the developments in the BRIC countries and started a Center for Emerging Markets (CEM) some years ago. Each center in China, India and Russia provides corporate partners with valuable local knowledge in different functional areas. CEM integrates a unique mixture of European, Chinese, Indian and Russian researchers and trainers in order to support business projects with the expertise and services needed in the respective emerging markets. The Center of Emerging Markets (CEM) of the EBS has research and education representatives at universities in China, India and Russia and collaborates not only with one but many different research and education institutions in the respective countries.
The EBS expertise in the BRICs
The Center for Emerging Markets (CEM), led by Dr. Michael Hensen, is based on the unique network of EBS research and regional executive education centers in China, India and Russia. It provides companies with valuable local knowledge from the largest emerging markets. The CEM offers enterprises in Europe which are active in the most dynamic emerging markets a unique service portfolio such as tailor-made management trainings with local and global experts in general management, finance, marketing, production and supply chain management; market entry strategy development support and strategy implementation support in areas such as marketing, sourcing and logistics, information technology, manufacturing.

The EBS BRIC expertise
Russia
Markus Weidmann, Director Russia, works in close contact with Moscow City Government, the local business community and Russia’s top-3 business schools. Numerous individuals support EBS activities in Eastern Europe, among them Prof. Dr. Klaus Mangold, Chairman of the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (Ost-Ausschuss) and honorary professor at EBS. The office in Moscow has built up a joint MBA programme in logistics of EBS and Russia´s leading Lomonosov Moscow State University. This MBA programme – the first of this kind in Russia – is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Markus Weidmann and his colleagues also conduct consulting and training projects for domestic and foreign companies. Russia is a large fast growing emerging market at the doorstep of the European Union with enormous natural and human resources. Not only the BRIC MBA students get unique insights into a breathtaking transition process that can be observed nowhere else in the world, but also into the culture of one of the most misunderstood country. «
China
Dr. Martin Lockstroem, Director China, is managing the BMW-SMI Endowed Chair for Purchasing and Supply Management at Tongji University, Shanghai. He is a frequent speaker on conferences and exhibitions in East Asia and supports local governmental agencies and the United Nations in terms of sourcing in China. Together with his colleagues from other universities like the China-Europe International Business School (CEIBS) he is working on different projects such as collaborative buyer-supplier integration with a special focus on the cultural aspects, identification of sourcing clusters in the Chinese automotive industry, market entry strategies for service providers. Dr. Lockstroem and his colleagues are also interacting with associations such as the German Chamber of Commerce, China Supply Chain Council and various Chinese organizations. The influence of China on the world is on the rise again. Every manager that intends to spend some parts of his career in Asia needs to understand how this economic and cultural giant thinks and acts. The BRIC MBA provides students with exceptional access to local knowledge, experts and networks. «
India
Prof. Dr. Roger Moser, Director India, is managing the EADS-SMI Endowed Chair for Sourcing and Supply Management at the IIM Bangalore to initiate and coordinate international research projects and education programmes between the EBS and leading business schools in India and Southeast Asia. Prof. Moser, his colleagues and business professionals like Suhas Gopinath, CEO & President of Globals Inc., Tobby Simon, CEO of Synergia, Fellow of MIT and Harvard, are working together on different projects: the identification of industrial clusters all over India, trend analyses in human resource management, the development of innovation strategies for multinational companies. They are collaborating with the Indian Institute of Materials Management and the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association and supporting projects of the Worldbank and other NGOs. While advanced knowledge about China has already become a common requirement for managers with a focus on emerging markets access to expertise in/from India is still scarce. The BRIC MBA is a unique chance for students to become experts for the Indian market. «

The EBS MBA programme prepares graduates for management positions in emerging markets, especially the BRICs. My focus is to combine theory and practice by offering “interactive teaching” that considers students as communicating partners in a common learning process. This is achieved by using relevant case studies as part of an “action-oriented” teaching and learning philosophy and by inviting guest speakers to further enhance the learning process in the class. «

Global networks are based on the efficient flow of information and goods. Therefore, companies need to stay competitive by designing the right supply chains and networks for distinct products and services. Successful cooperation, mergers & acquisitions, alliances and partnerships depend highly on communication between companies. Standards, agreed concepts and methods for financial and managerial accounting are a fundament for sharing information in international relations. Human Capital Strategy, talent management, competency mapping and 360 degree feedback utilizing capabilities and enabling employees to contribute to the value added of the company are topics of high relevance in today’s global networks. Human resource management has to include intercultural topics as well as established approaches from recruiting, remunerating and developing the workforce. Within the EBS MBA programme we will face these challenges in depth, basing our discussions on interesting case studies. «
Prof. Radha R. Sharma, PhD Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Development, MDI, Gurgaon, India
To understand the differences of emerging markets from developed markets, one needs more than studying framework conditions. The business environment is defined by many factors – “hard” factors like currency systems, taxation and legislation but also “soft” factors like the influence of history, culture, values and behaviour. The EBS MBA programme gives students the opportunity to learn about the hard as well as the soft factors from lecturers with different regional backgrounds and to experience intercultural challenges in the field during their semester abroad. «
