These awards are nested within the Graduate Studies program at AIM (as per the
diagram above). A Master of Music is awarded after the completion of four semesters
of study. Entry into a MMus program is determined though an interview process
and/or transition through the GCMus and GDMus stages.

Each semester of Graduate Study at AIM contains three areas of study:

Major Studies
Seminar
Research Project

Graduate Major Study.

Major Study (M5MS1-4) involves the investigation and development of a student’s
area of creative practice. Graduate Major Study is comprised of 12 individual lessons
that lead to a final performance, folio and/or recording (depending on the student’s
area of study). It is complemented in the first two stages by an elective choice that
supports the Major Study area of focus. A plan to provide support for Major Study
objectives will be individually tailored in consultation with the appropriate Head of
Department. Depending upon the student’s area of study, this support may consist of
auditing classes for specific skill development such as masterclasses, performance
studies, concert practice, ensemble, program seminars, arranging orchestration,
music production, music technology etc, or may entail access to studios and specific
equipment or instruments.

Graduate Seminar.

Graduate Seminars (M5GS1-4) are structured to include student Graduate Seminar
presentations (consisting of either an academic research progress report or a Major
Study proposal) interspersed with a weekly program of seminars (2 or 3 topics per
week) of interest to all Graduate students. The student’s Graduate Seminar
presentations should be substantial enough to generate questions and discussion
amongst the group. This will, under the guidance of the chair, serve to advance and
sharpen the presenting student’s thoughts about the methods and direction of his or
her research (and/or Major Study program), and expose other students to a wide
range of musical thought and practice.

Graduate Research Project.

Graduate Research Project is focused upon providing the skills needed to
successfully document creative practice. Students are required to demonstrate
research skills, analytical skills, writing skills, as well as critical thinking, creative
thinking, synthesis and conceptualisation based on primary resources specific to the
area of research. This unit aims to help determine how selected research methods,
analysis, research outcomes, report writing style, correct referencing and report
compilation can be appropriately integrated for music research. The student must
compile a research report that conforms to the guidelines issued by AIM. The
research report must demonstrate critical thinking and research analysis of at least
one primary resource.
