					     Magdalen Graduate Partnered Accommodation
This document, created by the Magdalen MCR Committee, is designed to
provide additional information for incoming Magdalen graduate students about
the partnered accommodation that Magdalen provides. It includes rental
costs, comments from students that have visited the rooms, photographs and
maps. It is worthwhile noting that these are subjective opinions and opinions
of the same rooms vary significantly. You should also note that many of the
photos were taken with an ultra-wide angle lens. This is useful for fitting as
much as one can in a single photo, however it does makes things look more
spacious as it is wider than the usual human viewing angle.

Note that not all of these flats will be available to Freshers. The University
also offers partnered accommodation for students – for more information on
this accommodation, see:

http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/accommodation/

You can also get some idea of the outside of some Magdalen accommodation
by using Google Map’s “Street View” function which has panoramic
photographs of most Oxford streets:

given year. The basis of allocation of those being made available to graduate students is the subject of a
policy agreed by the House Committee. The College may include or withdraw flats from that allocation
procedure at any time prior to the annual selection process.

Accommodation Photos & Comments
Daubeny Building (Off High Street)

The Daubeny Building is one of Magdalen’s most modern buildings. It is just off High Street
opposite the main Magdalen college site. High Street is one of Oxford’s most busy (and central!)
streets (though, of course, nothing compared to big cities) and the Magdalen bell tower rings
reasonably often. In front of the building is a rose garden, particularly beautiful during summer.
The building backs onto the University Botanic Gardens, which has both advantages and
disadvantages. It’s a beautiful garden, one of the oldest and most botanically diverse in the UK. It
does, however, attract a significant number of tourists, who are not aware that Daubeny is a
residential building and that makes it less private than other accommodation. There are a number of
partnered flats and single rooms. The bottom floor has a lab sometimes used for classes and events,
as well as a shared laundry.

Flat A:

Flat A is a two level flat, with a mezzanine bedroom and a living room, bathroom and kitchen on
the bottom floor. It backs onto the botanic gardens. It is similar to flat C, which is down the
corridor.

Flat C:

Essentially identical to Flat A above, this is a two-story flat with a loft bedroom and a lounge,
kitchen and an en suite bathroom downstairs. It faces the botanical gardens.

Flat E:

Flat E is a single story flat with a lounge, kitchen and an en suite bathroom. It faces the College and
the hedge maze in the Rose Garden, but is set back from the High Street and not overly loud.

Flat F:
Flat F is a downstairs Daubeny flat facing the High Street and Professor’s House. It has a
downstairs lounge and bedroom, with an en suite bathroom, and a lofted kitchen above the
bathroom.

Flat G:

                                                                                              9
Flat G is single level flat facing Professor’s House and the Botanical Gardens. It has a medium-
sized bedroom, small kitchen and a large, sunny lounge room.

                                   Left: Bedroom; Right: Kitchen

Flat K:
Flat K is a flat with a combined kitchen & living area and ensuite bedroom. It is located on the
second floor of the building facing the botanic garden and Rose Lane.

                                                                                                   10

Professor’s House (off High Street)

Beside the Daubeny Building, the Professor’s House also backs onto the University Botanic
Gardens. It is less modern than Daubeny. There are two partnered flats on the bottom floor and
other single graduate accommodation above.

Flat A:

When you enter Flat A, you enter an entrance hallway. To your right is a reasonably large living
room, to your left is the bedroom and separate study, and in front of you is the kitchen.

                                     Above: Large, long kitchen

Flat B:

Flat B has a different layout to Flat A. It lacks a separate study and the bedroom faces the botanic
gardens as opposed to High Street.

                                                                                                   15

Magdalen School House Flat

This flat is in between Longwall Street and High Street. It has a reasonably sized living room and
bedroom, but a very small shower in the bedroom and built in kitchen.

Waynflete Building

The partnered flats are on the top (third) floor of the Waynflete Building. They share a long
balcony which has views over the Plain (a busy roundabout that leads to Cowley & Iffley),
Magdalen Bridge and the Magdalen College School. These are the biggest of all of Magdalen’s
flats, though they are in an old, damp building. Undergraduates live on the floors below. All of
them have a large living room that opens up onto the balcony and a large kitchen.

Above: View from the Shared Balcony

Flat 1:

Flat 1 has a large lounge facing the shared balcony, a big kitchen and a reasonable bedroom and en
suite bathroom.

                                                                                                   19

Flat 3:
Flat 3, like the other Waynflete flats, has a large living room that leads onto a shared balcony.
Unlike Flat 2, it does not have a separate study.

                                                                                                    22

St Clement’s
The St Clement’s Flats are amongst the largest partnered flats at Magdalen, although they are old
and in some disrepair. They are situated behind the Waynflete building (which houses first year
undergraduate students) on the grassed area beside the Cherwell River.

10A St Clement’s
10A is the upper level flat. It has a larger lounge area and a balcony, but a much smaller and less
functional kitchen than 10B. It also has a bathroom in slightly worse repair than 10B.

                                  Left: Bedroom; Right: Loungeroom

Above: Bathroom

                  24
10B St Clement’s
10B is the lower of the two flats at St Clement’s. It has an open plan dining, lounge and kitchen
area and a large bedroom and en suite bathroom.

Above: Kitchen and dining area, overlooking the Cherwell
