Note: The following ‘List of Classes’ is a subset of the BCAWA ‘List of Classes’.
      These Classes are specific to the Nanaimo Winemakers’ Wine
      Competition. The ‘Class Qualifications’ document which follows
      conforms with the BCAWA official Class Descriptors in so far as all wines
      in the Nanaimo Winemakers’ competition shall be made from grapes.



                 C1     - Dry Red Bordeaux Style
                 C2     - Dry Red Pinot
                 C3     - Dry Red Zinfandel
                 C4     - Other Dry Red
                 C5     - Dry Red Cabernet Sauvignon
                 C6     - Rhone Style Red

                 D1     - Chardonnay
                 D2     - Dry White Pinot
                 D3     - Other Dry White
                 D4     - Aromatic White Grape

                 E      - Rosé Table

                 F      - Dessert

                 G      - After Dinner

                 I      - Social



Varietal Wines
      - must contain at least 85% (ie: from 85% to 100%) of the named varietal.
        The remaining 15% or less may include any other varietals.
      eg:    - Zinfandel (85% Zinfandel, 15% Sangiovese)
             - Cabernet Sauvignon (90% Cab Sauv, 5% Cab Franc, 5% Merlot)
             - Syrah (100% Syrah)

Blended Wines
     - must contain a mix of two or more varietals. The proportion of each
       varietal in the blend must be less than 85%.
     eg:    - Shiraz Cabernet (60% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon)

The terms ‘variety’ and ‘varietal’ are often used interchangeably. Technically
speaking, the term ‘variety’ refers to the grape or the vine while the term
‘varietal’ refers to the wine that is made from the grape.

C1 - Dry Red Bordeaux Style

Qualification:
       - Bordeaux wines may be either varietals or blends.
       - The approved grapes that qualify as a Red Bordeaux include:
              - Cabernet Sauvignon             - Petit Verdot
              - Cabernet Franc                 - Malbec
              - Merlot                         - Carmenére

Varietal (single grape variety)
      - Must contain at least 85% of any one of the approved grape varieties.
      - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

      Note: - The varietal ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ must be entered in Class (C5).
            - The varietals ‘Cabernet Franc’, ‘Merlot’, ‘Petit Verdot’, ‘Malbec’, and
              ‘Carmenére’ qualify in this class (C1) as a single varietal Bordeaux
              wine.

Blended
     - Must contain at least 85% of any two or more of the six approved grape
       varieties and the proportion of each varietal must be less than 85%.
     - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

      Note: ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ qualifies in this class as a component of a blend
            that contains at least 85% of any two or more of the six approved varietals
            and the proportion of each varietal must be less than 85%. eg:
            - 84% Cab Sauv and 16% of any one or more or the other Bordeaux
              varietals would belong in this class.
            - 60% Cab Sauv, 25% of another Bordeaux varietal and 15% of any other
              non Bordeaux varietal would belong in this class.
            - 84% Cab Sauv and 16% of any other non Bordeaux varietal would not
              belong in this class. This combination would be entered as Class (C4)
              Other Dry Reds. In this example you would require at least an
              additional 1% of any one of the other five approved varietals to qualify in
              the Bordeaux Class.

C2 - Dry Red Pinot

Qualification:
       - Must contain at least 85% of one or more of the following varieties:
              - Pinot Noir
              - Pinot Meunier
              - Gamay Noir

      - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

C4 - Other Dry Red

Qualification:
       - May be either a varietal or a blend.
       - This wine will not qualify under the following classes:
              - (C1) Dry Red Bordeaux
              - (C2) Dry Red Pinot
              - (C2) Dry Red Zinfandel
              - (C5) Cabernet Sauvignon
              - (C6) Rhone Style Red
              - (C7) Non-Vinifera Red Grape

       - The wines that qualify under this class will contain:
              - less than 85% Bordeaux varieties.
              - less than 85% Red Pinot.
              - less than 85% Red Zinfandel.
              - less than 85% Cabernet Sauvignon.
              - less than 85% Rhone Style Reds.
              - less than 85% Dry Red Non-Vinifera grapes.

       - Varietal vinifera wines must contain 85% or more of vinifera varieties including:
              - Lemberger                 - Sangiovese
              - Barbera                   - Touriga Nacional
              - Dornfelder                - Tempranillo (Valdepeñas)
              - Nebbiolo                  - Zweigelt
              - Ruby Cabernet             - Petite Sirah (Durif)
              - Montepulciano

       - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

       - Wines containing less than 85% interspecific hybrid grapes are eligible in this
         class.

Qualification:
       - Must contain at least 85% of one or more of the following grape varieties:
              - Alicante Bouschet        Mourvédre *
              - Carignane                Syrah *
              - Granache *

      - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

      Note: Syrah is also referred to as ‘Shiraz’.
            (*) Chateauneuf-du-Pape varietals.

      - Blends may also contain any other varietals permitted in Chateauneuf-du-Pape
        which include:
            Red Grapes                        White Grapes
            - Cinsault                        - Granache Blanc
            - Counoise                        - Bourboulenc
            - Muscardin                       - Clairette
            - Terret Noir                     - Picardin
            - Vaccarèse                       - Roussanne
                                              - Picpoul

D1 - Chardonnay

Qualification:
       - Must contain at least 85% Chardonnay.
       - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

D2 - Dry White Pinot

Qualification:
       - May be a varietal or a blend and include the following grape varieties:
             - Pinot Blanc               - Pinot Noir (white juice)
             - Pinot Gris                - Pinot Meunier (white juice)
                                         - Gamay Noir (white juice)

      - Must contain at least 85% of any one of the above varietals.
      - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

Blended
     - Must contain at least 85% of any two or more of the above varietals but the
       proportion of each varietal must be less than 85%.
     - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

D3 - Other Dry White

Qualification:
       - May be a varietal or a blend.
       - This wine does not qualify under the following classes:
              - (D1) Chardonnay
              - (D2) White Pinot
              - (D4) Aromatic White Grape

      - Varietal vinifera wines must contain 85% or more of vinifera varieties including:
             - Auxerrois                       - Madeleine Angevine
             - Chasselas                       - Chenin Blanc
             - Sauvignon Blanc                 - Semillon
             - Colombard                       - Trebbiano
             - Gruner Veltliner

      - The remaining 15% or less may include any other grape variety or varieties.

      - Blends that include interspecific hybrid grapes are acceptable in this class and
        their ingredient percentages must be specified.
      - Aromatic white grape varieties are acceptable in blends provided their impact is
        subdued.

Qualification:
       - May be a varietal or a blend from Vitis vinifera grapes which include:

             - Bacchus                    - Scheurebe
             - Ehrenfelser                - Schonburger
             - Gewurztraminer             - Siegerrebe
             - Malvasia                   - Symphony
             - Optima                     - Viognier
             - Ortega                     - White Reisling

       - Aromatic non-vinifera grape wines are acceptable in this class.

E - Rosé Table

Qualification:
       - May be either a varietal or a blend.
       - Red and black grapes with colourless juice are most successful, but blends of
         red and white wines are also permitted.

                                          - Pale to deep pink.
                                          - An orange tinge is permissible.

F - Dessert

Qualification:
       - Wines intended to be drunk with the dessert course of the meal.
       - Alcohol must have been developed by fermentation of the wine. These are not
         fortified wines.
       - This class has three style sub-categories:
                (1) Botrytis Affected
                (2) Icewine Style
                (3) Other Dessert Styles (eg: Late Harvest)

      Note: The style of the wine must be indicated on the Entry Form and Bottle ID
            Tag.

Qualification:
       - May be either a varietal or a blend.
       - Wines intended to be drunk after dinner.
       - Fortified wines are included in this class such as:
               - Ports
               - Sweet Sherries
               - Madeiras
               - Other wines that are fortified, baked, or otherwise made using port,
                 sherry etc. type processes.

       - Should be enjoyable without the accompaniment of food. This is a patio wine
         not a table wine and may be served alone or with light style foods (snacks).
       - A touch of ‘spritz’ is permissible.
