Unit Proposal Template – completion guide
1. Unit code and title
Replace Unit code and title with actual unit code and title. Check TAMS to make sure
the code is not already in use for an existing unit as the code for each unit must be
unique across the MCD (your Registrar or Coursework Coordinator will be able to help
      you with this).

Replace RTI with RTI code [CCTC, CTC, ICSPF, SATC, UFT, Whit, YTU]

2. New / Revised unit
Delete the one which is inapplicable, so this line says either New Unit or Revised Unit.

3. Proposed by
The name of the faculty member who is proposing the unit (described below as ‘the
      proposer’).

4. Unit value
A standard MCD unit is 15 points; other values should be used only in exceptional
      circumstances.

5. Level
Specify the levels at which the unit is available. Levels are:

      Diploma
Undergraduate Bachelor of Theology (specify levels 1, 2 or 3)
Graduate GradCerts, GradDips, MDiv and MTS
Postgraduate MA(Theol), MDivHons, MTS, research awards

6. Discipline
& 7. Crosslisted to other disciplines
Choose from the following table. Normally only one discipline is used, however some
units are ‘crosslisted’ to other disciplines. If this is the case, please provide a separate
     unit code for each discipline.

 Field A Field B Field C Field D

8. Courses in which this unit is taught
List all courses for which this will be an eligible unit. Please provide separate unit
descriptions for undergraduate and postgraduate units. If the unit is offered towards the
Master of Divinity please specify the type and focus of the unit using one entry from the
      list below:

      Foundational units
          Biblical Languages
          Biblical Studies
          Christian Thought and History
          Groundwork for Christian Ministry

      Integrative units
           Hermeneutics and Culture
           Faith and Ministry Praxis
Worship and Mission of the Church
           Theology and the Public Realm

           or Clinical Pastoral Education)

      Specialised units
          Biblical Studies
          Christian Thought & History
          Christian Life & Ministry

9. Content
Write 1-2 paragraphs describing the unit. This section should be aimed at the student.

10. Learning outcomes
List the knowledge and skills the students will be expected to have gained by the end of
the unit. Learning outcomes must be measurable goals which should be tested by the
assessment for the unit. Use action words such as articulate, demonstrate, evaluate,
analyse. Where a class is taught at more than one level, the higher level should
comprise additional and more intense learning outcomes.

11. Prerequisites
Please specify units or areas of study which must be completed before this unit is
    undertaken. Delete if inapplicable.

12. Corequisites
Please specify any other units which students must complete in order to receive credit
for this unit. Delete if inapplicable.

13. Prohibited Combinations
Please specify any units within the RTI with substantially similar content which cannot be
credited in the same course as this unit. Delete if inapplicable.

14. Mode of Teaching
Specify the mode in which the unit is to be taught using the following list:
Semester (i.e. face to face over 12 weeks)
         Online
         Intensive
         Other
Provide indicative dates if the unit is taught as an intensive (e.g. 6 hours per day for 8
consecutive days or 8 hours per day over five Saturdays). Provide further details if
    Other is selected.

15. Teaching Methods
Describe the types of learning experiences offered in this unit (e.g. lectures, tutorials,
    seminars, field work).

16. Workload
Indicate the expected student workload for the unit by completing the table as follows:
    a. Indicate the total scheduled class time per week. Include lectures, tutorials, clinical
         and other placements, etc.
    b. Indicate the total time students are expected to spend per week in studying outside
of scheduled class time. This figure should allow for the time required to prepare
and write assessment tasks and examinations.
b1. For undergraduate units, the indicative study time for standard semester
units is nine hours per week, generally comprised of three timetabled hours
plus six hours of personal study.

b2. For graduate/postgraduate units, the indicative study time for standard
semester units is twelve hours per week, generally comprised of three
timetabled hours plus nine hours of personal study.

      c. Add timetabled hours to personal study hours to calculate the total workload hours
per week. The indicative undergraduate workload total is 9x12=108 hours. The
indicative graduate/PG workload total is 12x12=144 hours.

      d. Multiply c. (workload hours per week) by the number of teaching weeks in the unit
to calculate the total workload hours for the unit.

For intensive units, remove the references to weeks and calculate totals for timetabled
hours and expected personal hours as appropriate. Total workload hours should
nonetheless approximate the indicative totals described above.

Unit proposal template (Coursework Studies Committee as at 27 May 2010) Page 6 of 7
17. Assessment
Briefly describe all assessment tasks for the unit, including word counts for each item
    (e.g. 1 x 3000 word research essay). Provide a weighting for each item (e.g. 50%)
ensuring that the total adds up to 100%. Assessment tasks must test the learning
outcomes for the unit, please provide the numbers of learning outcomes assessed by
each task. If there is only one assessment task, it should assess all learning outcomes.

The normal total word count for a standard 15 point unit at each level is as follows:
      Diploma 3,000 to 4,000 words
      Undergraduate first year 4,000 words
                     second year 4,000-5,000 words
                     third year 5,000-6,000 words
      Graduate level 6,000 words
Postgraduate level 6,000 words, usually a single paper

Each hour of examination time counts as 1,000 words.

If this unit is to be assessed by means other than written work, please provide a
justification explaining how the assessment may be marked by two examiners and
providing an equivalent word length for any non-written item.

18. Faculty
Please list the staff who will teach this unit. If any staff member has not been accredited
as a teacher by the Coursework Studies Committee in the appropriate discipline, please
also complete and submit a Teacher Accreditation form.

19. Recommended reading
Provide a bibliography of no more than ten works. Mark with asterisks those texts which
    students should purchase.

Please format the list as for a bibliography according to Turabian
      (http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/turabian/turabian_citationguide.html).

20. Library Impact Statement
Identify texts and resources which may need to be made available by the appropriate
    library.

21. Approvals
Approvals must be completed in sequence; all approvals must be complete before the
unit can be presented to the Coursework Studies Committee.

For new units, two reviewers in addition to the proposer are required. At least one of
these reviewers must be external to the offering RTI.

For revised units, one reviewer in addition to the proposer is required. This reviewer
      may be internal.
