Golf Marathon Wildwood, FL
After having to reschedule due to the weather, the 3rd Annual Golf Marathon was finally held on May 8 at the Continental Country Club in Wildwood. Several golfers had participated in the last few marathons, and we also welcomed a number of new golfers to the event this year. The day started bright and early when the group teed off at 7:45 am, and the last golfers didn’t leave until almost 7 pm! The total raised is still being tallied, but the event raised about $4000 to help support Club programming. Thanks to Eric English for heading up the event (as well as hitting the links that day), and to our golfers Chris Carlyle, Joe Hornstein, Jay Hurley, Gregg Knight, Jon Mehr, John Michael, Bill O’Brien, Steve Stiffler, and Vinnie Vittoria for taking a day out of their busy schedules to play golf for the kids! Special thanks to the companies that donated items and supplies: Colonial Bank, Dillards, Doggibags, Edwin Watts and Publix, and a BIG thank you to Continental Country Club for letting us play through regularly scheduled events!

Torch Club Up and Running/Celebrations Eustis, FL
Members of the newly-formed Torch Club at the NE Lake Unit have been meeting regularly and learning about parliamentary procedure and preparing service projects. Torch Clubs are chartered small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Torch Club members learn to work together to plan and implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness, and social recreation. Deputy Chief Anthony Robinson of the Eustis Police Department is helping advise the group. The Torch Club played a major role in planning the End of School Year party at the Club. The party, held May 29, was a way of celebrating the end of another successful school year at the Club. Former staff member Ryan Gillman served as DJ, and the Torch Club members worked with Club staff to run fun activities. The end of the school year meant celebrations for staff members Ashley Thornton and Marvin Monroe, who both graduated from high school congratulations to you both! However, it also meant saying goodbye to some familiar faces - volunteers Olivia Davis and Vi Robinson are both moving away. Olivia recently graduated from Florida State University, and will be continuing her education at the University of Georgia, where she will be studying for a Masters in College Student Affairs Administration. Vi is moving to Texas to be closer to her kids and grandkids, and has already contacted the local Boys & Girls Club to continue volunteering after she’s moved. “We are sad to see Olivia and Vi leave, but happy for them as they both continue to pursue and achieve their life’s dreams,” said Robb Elmatti, NE Lake Unit Director.
