Requirements: Examinations, daily quizzes and daily homework.
Prerequisites: None

Course Objective: Accelerated Elementary Greek I and II is six-week intensive course
introducing classical Greek. The goal of this course is to provide the student with a basic
understanding of the ancient Greek language through the study of its grammar, morphology, and
syntax. There will also be discussion of Greek history, culture and religion, as well as the
influences Greek civilization has had on modern Western culture. Successful completion of the
textbook prepares students for advanced reading courses in Greek and/or independent reading of
texts by authors like Plato, Thucydides and Euripides.

Course Plan: Students are expected to complete all assignments in a timely manner and to
participate actively in classroom discussion. We will complete as many of the drills and exercises
as possible in class. As in any language course, it is extremely important for students to maintain
a disciplined regimen of daily study, and to this end, outside of class you will be expected to
review carefully material recently covered, memorize recent vocabulary and complete any written
assignments. Written assignments (such as translation of practice sentences) must be completed
before the following class meeting. These assignments must be written out neatly and legibly.
Comprehensive and substantial daily quizzes will provide the basis for evaluation of student
progress. Weekly tests will be cumulative, though the focus of any given test will be on the
material covered most recently in class.

Attendance Policy: ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Absences will result in the deduction
2% from your final grade.

Grading: Each of the following components will determine a fraction of the final grade:
a. Participation: 25%
b. Homework: 25%
c. Quizzes: 15%
d. Hour Tests (Midterms): 25%
e. Final examination: 10%

Schedule of Classes and Assignments: Below is a schedule of classes noting the units from
the textbook that we will cover each week and the test/exam dates. I will announce regular
homework assignments and remind you about quizzes and tests in class.
