Changing the Future ….
This evidence-based, practical course will be held over 8 sessions, each session 2½ hours duration. We will examine a range of topics that take participants from oral language through to reading fluency and accurate spelling. The course will be presented by Steve Heath (UWA) and Mandy Nayton (DSF).
The 8 sessions will cover the following:
How we learn literacy The role of phonological awareness Switching on to sound Writing down the sounds: phonics When things go wrong - What works? Successful interventions to date. Using students’ strengths 1: A metacognitive, problem-solving approach to developing literacy skills Using students’ strengths 2: Using morphology and grammatical knowledge to spell and read Using students’ strengths 3: Metamemory and reading fluency
Commencing Thursday 30th July 2009, then Thursdays 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th August, 3rd and 10th September and 15th October. Times: 4.00pm – 6.30pm for each of the 8 sessions Venue: DSF Literacy & Clinical Services 10 Broome Street (off Douglas Ave), South Perth Dates: Cost: $660 (GST inclusive)
About Steve Heath Steve is a clinical and research psychologist and also a trained teacher. She has a special interest in disorders of language and literacy and particularly phonological processing. She works clinically with primary school aged children and adults. Steve works in the multi-disciplinary team at the UWA Child Study Centre Learning Clinic with students whose specific learning disabilities interfere with their academic achievement. About Mandy Nayton Mandy is currently the Executive Officer of DSF. She is a practising psychologist and qualified teacher with extensive experience in the field of educational and counselling psychology. Mandy assesses children, teenagers and adults struggling with the acquisition of effective literacy skills and recommends appropriate class-based and individual strategies. Like Steve, Mandy is passionate about improving outcomes for frustrated and unhappy students and their teachers.
