BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Define, develop and evaluate new educational and instructional programs for a major department.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Define, develop and evaluate medical educational programs for staff, residents and patients.
Evaluate, investigate and research the efficiency and effectiveness of current medical educational
programs and their utilization by and for the staff and residents.
Investigate and research new instructional design approaches, technologies, equipment, and
materials in the health education field and make recommendations regarding usage and
implementation.
Serve as consultant to surgical staff regarding effective instructional strategies for communicating
biomedical concepts, ideas and procedures.
Advise residents in the preparation of presentations for Grand Rounds.
Plan, design and create medical art, including 3-dimensional models, illustrations, graphics and
photographic work for the new instructional programs.
Coordinate and provide professional guidance to staff engaged in medical artwork.
Supervise unit's operating budget and participate in annual budget projections and preparation.
Supervise supply and equipment inventory control system.
Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from a Director, Assistant Director or other designated official.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional supervision is exercised over support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in Medical Art or an equivalent combination of education and experience in
Medical Art is required; A Master of Arts degree in Instructional Design and Technology is
desirable.
Considerable (3-5 years) related experience in Medical Art and Instructional Design is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Expertise in more than one area of Instructional Design and Technology (health careers
education, administration, media selection and production, instructional design, adult
education) is desirable.
