Grand Canyon University. He is only the third head
coach in the program’s storied history. Stapleton needs
seven wins to reach his 200th career milestone victory.
Stapleton’s best season at GCU came in 2002, his
second year in charge, when Grand Canyon went 38-21 overall,
27-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The
Antelopes advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional
Tournament, marking the school’s second trip in a three-year
span. While serving as associate head coach, Stapleton helped
lead GCU back to the postseason in 2000 as the ’Lopes finished
37-23 overall, 27-13 in the CCAA. GCU earned berths to the
CCAA Championships and the NCAA Division II West
Regional Tournament that season.
Stapleton pitched for Grand Canyon in 1982-83,
posting a 16-5 career record and 3.28 ERA, helping lead the ’Lopes to an NAIA National Championship in
1982. Stapleton was the first GCU player to make it to the Major Leagues under the guidance of former head

Stapleton pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1987
and 1988, before moving on to the Houston Astros. He has

Grand Canyon baseball is home of the Tim Salmon

Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 with a dedication ceremony on
GCU’s campus. The 5,000-square foot structure is located
adjacent to Brazell Stadium and includes locker rooms,
coaches offices, a training room and public restroom
facilities.

Salmon, who played at Grand Canyon from 1987-89, enjoyed a successful Major League career with the
Anaheim Angels, which included the 2002 World Series Championship, as well as earning American League

                              2008 Outlook
Over the winter months, Dave Stapleton and his team was busy giving Brazell
Stadium’s center field wall a facelift. Square foot by square foot, they boarded up the gaps
that filled the wall overlooking 35th Avenue.
In much of the same parallels, the 2008 Antelopes baseball team will see a facelift
of sorts.
“A lot of new faces,” said Stapleton, who enters his eighth year as coach.
New faces who could spend time in multiple places.
“We just have a team this year where I can bounce
guys from the infield to the outfield and move guys
around,” Stapleton said.
Senior utility player Trevor Vega is the leading
returning hitter back from the 2007 squad that went 31-21.
Vega batted .413 with 11 doubles and 32 RBI last year.
Senior catcher Dan Colella hit .331 with four home runs and 45 RBI. Senior
shortstop/second baseman Brian Evans hit .324 with 25 RBI.
They, along with outfielder Tate Ford (.261, 6 doubles, 1 HR, 15 RBI) represent the
veterans on a team that will be constantly competing amongst itself for at-bats and playing
time.
The same holds true for the pitching staff, which will see an influx of new arms.
Senior Raul Rojas went 3-0 with a 5.65 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 36 2/3
innings last season. He is the only pitcher with significant returning experience. Chris
Shelley But senior Nick Lowery, who spent time at the University of Utah, has been a
pleasant surprise. Sophomores Mark Hardy and Chris Shelley could also see a big
workload on the mound.
“I think they’re all eager to assume the roles that lots of guys had last year,”
Stapleton said. “They’re gonna have to rise up and show us what they have. I like the fact
that every one of them are competing for a job.”
Last season the Antelopes went on a stretch where they won 18 of 22 games. But
losing 19 players from that team signals a learning curve for the new club.
“The game is faster,” Stapleton said. “It takes ’em a while to catch up. We should
be able to put up some numbers. There will be lots of new faces on the field, but they
should be able to fill their role.
“Every day we walk on this field it is about winning ball games. Every day we
come together as a ball club in that clubhouse we want to win a championship again.
Everything we do as a coaching staff, we want to provide them with everything they can to
be successful.”
Stapleton’s staff of Rod Bair, Dan Maxwell, Scott Snyder, John Hammel, Ryan
Bethel and Ryan Bristow is as hard a working group as you’ll find around a ball field.
“I believe I have the best staff in the country,” Stapleton said. “I know every coach
says it. But I believe it because they love this program.”
To be successful as an independent, which Grand Canyon will be again this season,
means the Antelopes have to win a lot of games. With no conference championship to play

                                                                                           10
for, the ultimate is reaching the postseason. That can’t be done unless the Antelopes come
close to winning every time out.
“What they have right now is something they can’t compare to any other thing,”
Stapleton said. “Nothing compares to the national championship that I’ve had.”
Stapleton won an NAIA national title as a player at Grand Canyon in 1982. Now
GCU competes at the NCAA Division II level, where this year’s schedule is loaded with
some of the top teams in the country. Mesa State, UC San Diego, Sonoma State, Chico
State all occupy dates on the Antelopes’ schedule.
“I just feel if we’re gonna try to be the best, you got to play the best,” Stapleton
said. “We don’t have the protection of a conference. We play one of the toughest schedules
in the West, if not the nation. But once we come out of that, if we’re successful, we’re
gonna be prepared for the playoffs.”

Tim Salmon is the most famous of Grand Canyon’s baseball alumni. Salmon was a student-athlete
from 1987-89 before being drafted by the California Angels in the third round of the amateur draft. During his
GCU career, he hit more home runs than any Grand Canyon player with

Curtis and Paul Swingle occupied roster spots with the Angels. During that
1993 season, Salmon earned American League Rookie of the Year
honors with a .283 average, 31 HR, 95 RBI and .536 slugging percentage.
Salmon hit 299 career home runs, 1,016 RBI, 1,674 hits and a .282
average over 14 seasons with the Angels. In addition to his success in the
Major Leagues, Salmon has given back to the Grand Canyon community
through academic scholarships and the donation of the baseball
clubhouse, which bears his name. Salmon is a huge supporter of the
Canyon Baseball Association, a non-profit organization that
supports GCU baseball. His #10 was retired on Jan. 20, 2001 as part of
Grand Canyon’s Baseball Alumni weekend. In 2002, the Anaheim Angels jumped on the back of surging
Salmon as he led them from a terrible season start to become World Series Champions that October in seven
games over the San Francisco Giants.

Chad Curtis
Chad Curtis spent the 1989 season at GCU where he hit .369 with team highs in RBI (83),
hits (103), and tied with the team lead in HR with teammate Tim Salmon with 19. In the
1989 Draft, Curtis was selected by the California Angels in the 45th round and made his
Major League Debut in 1992. In a June 2004 issue of Baseball America, Curtis was
selected as the “Best 45th round pick” ever. In 1993, four years after being teammates at
Grand Canyon, Curtis along with Salmon and Paul Swingle occupied spots on the
Anaheim Angels Big League Roster. During his 10-year MLB career, Curtis spent time
with six different ball clubs including the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. In Game
3 of the 1999 World Series, as a member of the New York Yankees, Curtis stepped to the
plate in bottom of the 10th inning against Mike Remlinger of the Atlanta Braves and drove
his offering over the left-center field fence for the 11th walk off home run in
World Series history and the first since Joe Carter’s historic blast in 1993. Curtis smacked
two home runs in the game as the Yankees won 6-5 on their way to their 25th World Championship.

Cody Ransom
Cody Ransom was a member of the 1998 GCU Baseball team and was a key
to that squad winning the Western Athletic Conference Northern Division.
Ransom started every game at shortstop, hitting .330 with 8 HR and 48 RBI
while leading the team with 20 doubles. The San Francisco Giants drafted
Ransom in the 9th round of the 1998 June amateur draft. Ransom shot
through the Giants system, making his Major League debut on Sept. 5, 2001
and made appearances on the Giants roster through the 2004 season. He
moved on to play in the Chicago Cubs organization. Prior to coming to GCU,
Ransom was a survivor of what became a fatal van accident when his South
Mountain Community College baseball team’s van blew a tire on a team trip to
Tucson. Four men in Ransom’s van died as the van rolled.

Dr. Dave Brazell
Dr. Dave Brazell, the first baseball coach in school history, led Grand Canyon to its first
NAIA National Championship in 1980. A member of the American Baseball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame, Brazell was twice named NAIA Coach of the Year and had his
#20 retired in 1982. Five years later, the stadium was named in his honor. It was during
Brazell’s tenure as head coach that GCU saw Frank Snook and Tom Tellmann become
the school’s first two alumni to reach the Major Leagues.

Dr. Gil Stafford
Dr. Gil Stafford, the second of only three head coaches, compiled a GCU record 760 victories
while at the helm. Stafford guided GCU to NAIA National Championships in 1981, 1982 and
1986. He also directed the program to its only Division I postseason appearance when his
1998 squad won the Western Athletic Conference’s Northern Division earning the team a berth
in the conference tournament. Eleven of the 13 Grand Canyon alumni that made it to the Major
Leagues played under Stafford during his tenure at GCU. Headlining that list of alumni that
played under Stafford is Anaheim Angels outfielder Tim Salmon, former New York Yankees
World Series hero Chad Curtis and San Francisco Giants shortstop Cody Ransom. Stafford’s
#25 was retired on Jan. 20, 2001 as part of Grand Canyon’s Baseball Alumni weekend.

Tim Salmon
The only player among these men is the most famous of Grand Canyon baseball alumni. Tim
Salmon was a student-athlete from 1987-1989 before being drafted by the then-California
Angels in the third round of the amateur draft. In 1993, Salmon earned American League
Rookie of the Year honors. He won a World Series title in 2002. He had a .282 career batting
average with 299 home runs, 1,674 hits and 1,016 RBI. He hit .330 with 34 home runs and 105
RBI in 1995, and batted .300 with with 26 homers and 88 RBI in 1998. During his GCU career,
he amassed more home runs than any Grand Canyon player with 51, more runs with 225 and
ranked third in career average with a .383 mark. In addition to his success in the Major
Leagues, Salmon’s generosity to the GCU community includes academic scholarships and the
donation of the baseball clubhouse which bears his name. His #10 was retired with Stafford’s
jersey on Jan. 20, 2001 as part of Grand Canyon’s
Baseball Alumni weekend.
