Area Health Services
Our Area Health Services provide acute hospital and ambulance services that demonstrate the Government’s
commitment to care, teaching and research and which are valued by Tasmanians.

The Area Health Services comprises the Launceston General Hospital, the North West Area Heath Service, the
Southern Area Heath Service (Royal Hobart Hospital and Primary Health Services South) and the Tasmanian
Ambulance Service.

We provide flexible working arrangements to fit your lifestyle and great working conditions including attractive

Launceston General Hospital (LGH)
The LGH is a busy teaching hospital of the University of Tasmania serving a regional population of about
140,000. Excellent experience is available in the general areas of Medical, Surgery, Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine. Launceston is an attractive and historic city with
a population of about 90,000 at the head of the beautiful Tamar Valley. The city boasts a relaxed lifestyle and
ample opportunities to enjoy Tasmania’s natural, cultural and culinary abundance.

North West Area Health Service (NWAHS)
The NWAHS is a partnership between the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH), Mersey Community Hospital
(MCH) and Primary Health Services in the North West region to integrate primary and acute care. The NWAHS
comprises of two hospital campuses, one in Burnie (North West Regional Hospital) and the other in Latrobe
(Mersey Community Hospital) serving a population of well over 100,000 on the North West Coast of Tasmania
and the North West Regional Hospital is also a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Tasmania. The
North West Regional Hospital is also the site of the Tasmanian Rural Clinical School and offers students from
Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy an excellent teaching and clinical experience in General Surgery, Medicine,
Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation, Mental Health, Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care.
The North West is one of the states most prosperous farming areas. It has great beaches, scenic rainforest
walks, world class food and produce, wonderful recreation and some of the best wilderness experiences in the
Cradle Coast and West Coast areas.

Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH)
The RHH is one of the few generalist hospitals in the country and offers treatment in a full range of services to
residents in the south of the state, a population of some 230,000. As the major teaching hospital for the
University of Tasmania, offers numerous professional advantages providing services in all major disciplines
except for a spinal unit. Hobart is the largest city in Tasmania. It has many historic buildings, cultural events,
bushland and spectacular scenery and great proximity to other attractions.

The Employment Register

         The Employment Register is open for one year from the date of the first advertisement;
         The Register is used to staff selected vacancies on a fixed term basis. Opportunities will be available for
          short-term and long-term contracts for up to 1 year.
         Applications received are acknowledged and retained on the Agency’s Recruitment Technology System;
         As vacancies arise, applicants will be assessed and ranked according to the skill mix and requirements
          of the area at the time;
         Applicants, in order of merit, will be contacted to determine if they are interested in the position;
         If the applicant is interested in the position, the applicant will be employed on a fixed-term basis in the
          position.
