Internships require faculty sponsorship. The role of the faculty is to . . .

Student eligibility for internship credit is based on the following criteria . . .
Applicants must have completed their freshmen year.
Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (4.0).
Students must experience ne w learning during the internship. (Internships with organizations for
which a student is already working or that he or she has worked with in the past must contain significant
projects and independent work that is new to the intern.)
Credit requests should be based on the following . . .
The average internship application is written for 3 hours of credit.
The internship committee expects 40 clock hours for every hour of credit requested.
Internships for 4 or more credit hours are possible; however, the internship must contain academic
projects that are unusually ambitious and demanding.
Twelve credit hours are considered ONLY when the student is involved in a full time, off-campus
program, combining academic work within the experience.
As many as 12 total hours of academic credit earned as an internship may be applied toward the
minimum require ments for a degree from Hastings College
Deadlines for submitting proposals follow . . .
INTERIM and SPRING applications are due on Friday before Thanksgiving break.
SUMMER and FALL applications are due on Friday of the third week in April.
There is a $20.00 fee assessed when proposals are submitted after the deadline.
Late Proposals: If you are unable to meet these deadlines you may file a Letter of Intent for
Submitting a Late Proposal. The Letter of Intent must be filed by the deadline date and a full application
must be submitted at a later time before credit will be considered.
Administrative and Academic Guidelines for Proposals
Guidelines for completing your application follow . . .
Contact an appropriate faculty me mber to serve as a sponsor for your internship.
Note that Faculty members are not obligated to supervise internships, as they may have
professional commitments that do not allow time for this added responsibility.
In consultation with your faculty supervisor, determine the number of credit hours to request,
academic assignments and reading will be part of the internship course, and a method of
monitoring and communication during the internship experience.
Students are responsible for finding a sponsoring agency for the internship.
Set up an intervie w with a contact person at the sponsoring agency to coordinate the specific
details of the internship expe rience.
Items to review with the sponsoring agency in the interview include:
the academic purpose of the internship,
experience you are bringing to the internship,
the number of hours you would like to put into the internship, and
the responsibilities the agency must accept for evaluating you.
Items to achieve agreement on from your sponsoring agency in the interview include:
an agreement on work schedule and hours,
the name(s) of site supervisor(s) and a clear understanding of internship responsibilities,
a general outline of activities and work responsibilities, and
a mutually agreed upon monitoring and evaluation procedure.
Create and incorporate a detailed reading list mutually agreed upon by the inte rn, faculty sponsor
and host supe rvisor. Students may ask for suggestions from the internship supervisor and faculty
sponsor, but ultimately they are responsible for the reading component of the internship.
Obtain the necessary Approval Signatures and submit proposal to Career Services.
Proposals are evaluated by the Internship Committee based on the following . . .
The weight and clarity of the academic purpose.
The appropriateness of the structured internship activities and responsibilities.
The rigor of the evaluation standards and merit of the academic assignments, i.e., journals, research, final
papers, etc. (A guideline to consider would be that work be equivalent to the work accomp lished e in a structured on-
campus class of the same credit hour level.)
The bibliography. (The reading list must be submitted with the application and it must be detailed, including amount of
reading, subject, titles, dates and/or sources.)
Proposals are approved using the following process . . .
The Internship Committee considers applications.
Career Services notifies students of the action of the Internship Committee.
If proposals need revision, Career Services will contact students to request amendments to
proposals and proposals are reconsidered.
If proposals are approved, the registrar's office is notified and students may register for internship credit.
(Students must have an approved internship proposal before they can register for internship cre dit.)
All proposals must be word processed or typed. No exceptions will be allowe d.

IV. INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
1. Have you worked at the agency before? If "Yes," present a persuasive argument that explains how
this experience will be a new and different learning experience for you.
2. Write one or two paragraphs to fully describing your proposed internship experience, providing
details as to what you expect to accomplish during the internship period. (What will be your
internship responsibilities? With what aspects or departments of the sponsoring agency will you be
involved? What will be expected of you as an intern? How will you interact with various departments
and with you host?)
3. In one or two sentences, describe the role of your site supervisor in evaluating the internship.
V. ACADEMIC INFORMATION and EVALUATION CRITERIA

2. Detail in three to five sentences or bullet points the academic purpose and objectives for your

with your faculty sponsor. What academic work will you assume along with or outside of the work
experience aspect of the internship?
4. Using bibliographic format, detail the readings that will be required of you during the internship. This
information should be specific in both the amount of material and the source of the material. A
bibliography is required for all internships approved for credit.
5. Explain how the readings relate to the internship experience. How will the readings be evaluated by
your faculty supervisor as an aspect of your overall grade?
