NLCP Summer Reading Assignment – English I: World Literatures (Grade 9)
Street Love by Walter Dean Myers
2 June 2011
Dear 2011-2012 English I: World Literatures Student:
Welcome to North Lawndale College Preparatory Charter High School! In order to be successful at NLCP, you
must put forth your best effort on all of your assignments. The following is one of the first opportunities for you to
do so.
In order to be prepared for the first day of class in August, you must complete the following exercise. This exercise
will become your first graded assignment of the 2011-2012 school year. You must read this novel and complete all
assignments before the first day of school. Please bring completed assignments with you to English class on the
first day of school. Read over the assignment carefully and answer each question with a thoughtful and well-
written response.
The following assignments are required:
1. Library Card: You must obtain your own public library card. Be prepared to show your card in class for a grade.
2. Comprehension/Guiding Questions: You will answer ALL 6 questions (each with several parts to it) to help your
understanding and push your thinking about the book. When appropriate, you must support your answers with
specific evidence from the text. All answers must be written in complete sentences.
3. Episodic Notes: In order to complete the Episodic Notes assignment, you will use a graphic organizer (handout)
to highlight the six most important events from the novel. You will draw an image to represent each event,
describe what is happening in your picture, and explain why it is important.
4. Letter to Damien: Think about Damien’s decision at the end of Street Love. Write a letter to Damien. Tell him
whether you agree or disagree with his decision. Your letter must state your opinion and discuss 3 reasons
why you agree or disagree with Damien’s decision.
5. Final Chapter: After reading Street Love, you will write an extra chapter to the book. Write a chapter
describing what Damien and Junice are doing five years after the last chapter of the book. The chapter will be
titled ―Damien and Junice Five Years Later‖. The chapter must be written in the same style as the book and be
20 lines or more.
Typing your work is not a requirement, but if you want to impress your English teacher: Type your work!
We are looking forward to seeing you in August and being a part of your freshman experience.
Enjoy your summer,
Ms. Heidi Curran, Ms. Deondra Jackson, Ms. Misuzu Miyashita, and Ms. Kimberly Cody
Comprehension/Guiding Questions
Street Love by Walter Dean Myers
Directions: Answer each question on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Each of the following questions has more than one part. Answer ALL parts to ALL questions.
2. When appropriate, use specific evidence from the text to support your answers.
3. Make sure you answer each part in complete sentences!
4. You might start by highlighting or underlining each part of every question.
5. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation count!
1. On pages 5–6, Damien and Sledge face off to fight. Why does Damien walk away from Sledge?
What does Damien’s decision to back off show about his character?
2. Miss Ruby asks the question, ―Why you chasing White Girl dreams?‖ (page 19). Whom is she
asking? What are White Girl dreams? How are they different from Black Girl dreams?
3. The guards, the judge, her daughters, and society all make the assumption that if Leslie loved her
children, she wouldn’t have made the decision to sell drugs—she wouldn’t have risked going to
prison. Is there any truth in this judgment? What defense does she offer? How does she try to
make Junice responsible for her conviction and prison sentence?
4. On pages 29 and 31, Damien and Junice separately relate their experiences of sitting on the bench
in the school office. How do their perspectives differ? What experiences have they had that give
insight into their individual perspectives?
5. It is apparent from the life experiences of both Damien’s and Junice’s parents (pages 42–47) that
Damien and Junice have been raised differently. What are the parents’ expectations for their
children? How do they differ? How are they similar? How do their perspectives on Damien and
Junice’s relationship differ?
6. Based on the opinions of other characters and Junice’s actions and thoughts, what words would
describe her? Based on the same criteria, what words would describe Damien? How do they
differ? How are they similar?
