     – Validates inputs while they are being set, to ensure issues are identified immediately
Install all components during an installation execution phase
     – Manages the installation order automatically, so you don’t have to
     – Can optionally use a CD staging area, to avoid being prompted to insert each CD
Use the installation path which makes sense for your installation type
     – Express Install for minimal prompting
     – Advanced Install for maximum flexibility
     – Recover Installation to complete a failed installation

The JMX Framework offers visibility into the JVM “black box”

Monitoring framework built by Sun into the core JVM
View parameter values, log files, and other system information in real time
Change property values at runtime without restarting the system
Alert the system when parameter thresholds are exceeded
     – Windchill utilizes this capability to email administrators upon system alert
Remotely Manage every JVM in the cluster using a single console
Connect to Windchill with enterprise system management tools

6 © 2007 PTC
The Log4j Framework offers easily tailored logging capability

Industry standard “Log4” logging framework
Swap log files when they grow beyond a specified size
Configure the format and location of logging output dynamically
Merge log files produced by different JVMs and different systems
Send logging messages directly to a console
     – Configure Log4j to stream messages of interest directly over TCP/IP to a viewer
Record critical information along with each logging message
     – Log message level (DEBUG, WARN, CRITICAL, ...)
     – User ID
     – User IP Address
     – User Session ID
     – Timestamp
     – Thread Name

Windchill and LDAP Directory Service Stability

Context team membership groups are moving into the Windchill Database
      – Most “transactional” updates are now internal to the (Oracle/SQLServer) database
      – LDAP Directory is used primarily for reading information
Aphelion will still be a required component
      – Windchill has custom LDAP schema extensions to support Info*Engine properties
      – Some customers do not want to manage (all) their users and groups in corporate
        LDAP
Changes to “Enterprise” groups immediately affect access to contexts
      – Add a group as a member of a context team role
      – Changes in group membership immediately affect which users have access
