From the NewsWire
• Ontario: Ontario patients could soon get drug prescriptions from their local pharmacist as the governing Liberals look to join other provinces and
expand the prescribing powers of pharmacists, nurses, and other non-physicians. The Ministry of Health is quietly commissioning a study which
would examine whether those who have prescription authority now- such as midwives, optometrists and nurse practitioners-should be able to
prescribe more classes of drugs. Alberta expanded the role of its pharmacists last year, allowing them to prescribe some drugs, give drug refills
and inject vaccinations.
• HealthZone: Plan B, the controversial “morning after” contraceptive pill, will be freely available on Canadian drugstore shelves instead of being
kept behind the pharmacy counter. The drug, which can be taken up to three days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy, has been available
without a prescription since 2005. But anyone wanting it had to ask the pharmacist and often fill out a screening form with personal information that
was kept in the pharmacy computer.
• Washington: Mercury in dental amalgams may pose health risks to children, fetuses and pregnant women, the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration is warning. Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children
and fetuses, the FDA said. When amalgam fillings are placed in teeth or removed from teeth, they release mercury vapour. Mercury vapour is also
released during chewing. The FDA says consumers should not have amalgam fillings removed.
• Toronto: The Salvation Army has qualified with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) so that donations specified to the China
Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund will be matched, providing even more assistance for the earthquake survivors in Sichuan Province. CIDA will be
matching donations made by individual Canadians to qualified charities between May 12th and June 23rd.
• Collegeville, PA: Wyeth Pharmaceutical announced the initiation of the INTORACT (INvestigation of Torisel and Avastin Combination Therapy)
study, a worldwide randomized, open-label, phase 3b study comparing Torisel (temsirolimus) plus Avastin (bevacizumab) versus Avastin plus
interferon-alfa for first-line treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Wyeth Research is conducting the INTORACT study
with the support and assistance of Roche and Genentech.
