FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EVEN MORE EARTH DAY/EARTH WEEK EVENTS @ KPR

Toy exchanges, tree plantings and other ecologically friendly events are part of additional
activities planned at Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board schools to recognize
Earth Week this week, and Earth Day this Thursday.

The following special events are in addition to those already announced in last week’s
media release. For details on a specific school’s efforts, please contact the school
directly.

In the Municipality of Clarington, Kirby Public School teachers and students will be
working with Grow a Tree kits this week. Following classroom lessons, students will be
planting trees at various times.

In Northumberland County, Baltimore PS is collecting gently used toys, books and games
this week. On Earth Day, April 22, students will be able to choose an item to replace the
one they bought. Meanwhile, Beatrice Strong PS, Port Hope, students will join for an
Earth Day Assembly at 2 p.m., and create a video of the whole school singing Only
Borrowed. The video will be posted on the school website and Youtube. Students also
will raise funds for the Beatrice Strong Greening Committee to plant trees and create a
shaded sandbox.

Grafton PS students are taking home 300 white spruce seedlings donated by the province,
and planting them. Plans also include a “100 mile diet meal”; 30-90 minute make-over
(cleaning up ditches and road sides in the community); watching a “green” video;
rotating through learning stations focusing on waste management, water conservation and
wildlife stewardship; and playing games such Eco-bingo. The Grafton Earth Club also
joined with Cobourg District Collegiate Institute East and the Ganaraska Region
Conservation Authority to clean up Cobourg creek and release 1,000 salmon.

For the third year in a row, students at Grant Sine PS teamed up with radio station 107.9
the Breeze FM in Cobourg to record public service announcements. Eight PSAs, written
by the students in class and recorded by them in the studio, will begin airing on Earth
Day.

In Peterborough County and City, Buckhorn PS students’ environmental activities will
include yard clean-up at the school and the Buckhorn Community Center. Kenner
Collegiate Vocational Institute and Intermediate School are participating in a school
grounds & neighbourhood clean-up on Thursday, during period 2.

In Bridgenorth, Chemong PS’s Green Dragons have been promoting Earth Week and
Earth Day. Classes will be cleaning up the schoolyard and the community this week,
continuing to support the composting program and green classroom, working in the
outdoor classroom, and bringing in litterless lunches. Families are also being invited to
join in a morning of work on Saturday, May 1, to help get the school garden in shape for
planting.

Also, a quick reminder: Adam Scott Collegiate Vocational Institute will be unveiling a
new, four-foot lion sculpture in the Court of Leo, its courtyard garden. The unveiling
will take place Tuesday, April 20, at noon, with the sculptor present. The media are
invited.
