Modern nursing education was founded on the principles of Florence Nightingale in the midnineteenth century and continues to undergo change. University education for nurses began in Turkey in the early 1950s. The “nursing library” is unique and classified as special. The Nursing Library collection is associated with a school of nursing. The primary role of a nursing library is to support, serve, and define the mission of the system. After the 1990s, the role of nursing librarians changed like other librarians. Librarians had more responsibilities within the changing health sciences environment. The prevalence of information technology in the health professions and the educational system suggests more roles for learning resource centers. Libraries are learning resource centers for faculty, students and the other users. Access to information resources is crucial for the practice and education of nurses. Nurses’ interests can parallel specialties in medicine, social sciences, behavioral sciences and management subjects. The challenge is to keep up with the information needs of researchers who require nursing resources, print, electronic and the new media beyond the core collection of the library. The librarian is a link between the knowledge-based information of their subject and the key person in the system to provide basic and clinical research resources for health services research, and computer and communication technology in clinical practices. The library and the nursing librarian must provide access to the various types of information resources available for the nurses. Nursing literature is a valuable source of information for various kind of practice. For advanced practice nursing, a library collection should include resources for nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthesistists, and clinical nurse specialists to facilitate research. Nursing students at all levels must be encouraged to update their knowledge through the literature throughout their careers. Librarians, not only provide library resources, they also accomplish the ultimate goal of advancing information literacy and support life-long learning for nurses. What’s brewing in the Library volume: 8 issue: 4, May 2009 In this column, from now on we will be keeping you up-to-date about the library collection which is growing non-stop. As of May, the collection reached a total of 233,554 items in various formats. 288 books and 210 AV materials have been added to the collection in April. We always appreciate your participation in collection development work with your orders. The grant offered by DFG The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is the central, self-governing research funding organization that promotes research at universities. In 2005, the Library received 119 book donations through the grant offered by DGF. This was an opportunity for developing Library’s Law Collection. We are proud to announce that DFG offered 7,000 Euros worth book acquisition again for 2009. A list with a vast majority of German law books was selected and presented to DFG for their approval. A new collection is coming up: Ömer Diler (1945, Istanbul – 18 March 2005, Istanbul) was a Turkish numismatist specializing in Islamic coins. Ömer Diler was trained as a chemical engineer but became interested in numismatics in 1972 when he received a rare gold coin of the Ottoman Empire as a gift. He wrote a number of articles for the Turkish Numismatic Society and was also a contributing editor of the American Numismatic Society. His great collection of numismatics was purchased by Koç University Suna Kıraç Library. Ömer Diler’s Numismatic Collection processing is still in progress. When the processing will be completed, this fantastic collection can be reached at RCAC Library. This special collection will place RCAC Library in a leader position in Turkey in the area of Numismatics.
