Book and Author Suggestions Authors of Read Aloud Picture Books Read aloud picture books are meant to be read with your child. It is one of the best ways you can help your child learn to read. match for his/her reading level. Ask your child to read the title and the first page or two of the book. If he/she makes one – three word reading errors after reading approximately sixty words then it is likely a “just right” book. If four or more errors are made after reading sixty words, then the book may be too difficult and cause your child to become frustrated. Another good strategy is to select topics that your child can relate to through life experiences and /or classroom study. The goal of reading at home with your child is to enjoy reading together. In fact, rereading familiar books and poetry is often the best way for a child to enjoy reading with family members. When your child is reading to you it is important to praise his/her efforts. The illustrations in the book will help your child figure out unknown words and support an understanding of the story. It is always a good idea to encourage your child to check the picture to support his/her comprehension. Also, tell your child an unknown word if you sense that he/she cannot think of a word that would sound right or make sense in the story. If your child enjoys one of the following books on the list, look for others by the same author. Familiar characters in a series often help to support your child’s motivation to read.
