PART ONE: Reading (14 pts)
A/ Comprehension & interpretation.

Read carefully the following text then do the activities below:

                   ………………………………………..

The planet Earth has experienced over the last decades a major climate change. Due to the
greenhouse effect, a phenomenon caused by the smoke of factories and vehicles exhausts,
the overall temperature has slightly, but disastrously, increased. It follows that waters in
oceans and seas evaporate in large quantities and then fall back in the form of torrential
rains that cause flooding and landslides. The increase in global temperatures plays a great
role in the melting of the glaciers too, a thing which contributes to the rise in the sea level,
threatening to flood many coastal cities over the world. The other effect of the abnormally
high temperature is the drying of wetlands located far from the coasts, leading to the
extinction of certain species of animals and plants.
It’s obvious today that climate disruption is manmade. Therefore, if the major industrial
powers do not stop, or at least reduce, the emission of greenhouse gases produced by their
factories and vehicles, the Earth will eventually become, within a few centuries ahead, a
true inferno for mankind.
